Hello everyone!

I found myself with a little spare time and since I like creating stuff (webdeveloper, its a curse) I decided I would try to make my own map.

With a little help from forums here and there I came up with:


Unknown Lands
version 1.4

The title of the map is a quick refence to myself being all new to mapmaking

Version 1.4

- Made it so that you can actually expand at the gold and the 3rd
- Made more room behind the 4th expo minerals
- Added banner + maplegend to the topic

Version 1.3

- Added some more space behind the minerals in the natural
- Added a little more space behind the minerals in the main
- Redid the main base ramps to improve the ability to wall in
- Some minor texturework on things that I did wrong
- Made the 'holes' to the topright and bottomleft of the middle smaller to make some room for bigger fights
- Rotated the minerals on the center top and bottom expansions and removed the pathing blocker to make the 3rd easyer to take
- Removed the Xel'Naga watchtower in the middle (maybe I should put it somewhere else, but im not sure)



Creation information:

Like I said its my first map and there is obvious still alot to learn. I hope I am on the right track tho and with help I plan to make it as perfect as I can.

Map Specifications:

    * Map size (playable): 152 x 141
    * Players: 2 players
    * Spawn positions: 8 and 2 o'clock
    * Expansion points: 1 natural closeby, 2 'normal', 1 gold per player




Additional information + Development notes:

I am still working on it, shoot all you can see and think of at me. Just dont comment to much on the images and the quality of them, like I said im aware of that and working on it.

Not bad for your first map! Here's a couple of things that jump out at me.

It seems pretty choked. You can use dimfish's Map Analyzer to help with that.
The backdoor to the main is much like Blistering Sands, in that it is shorter for the attacker to switch from pressuring the nat and pressuring the back door than it is for the defender. That's not really enjoyed by players, particularly when the main is on the small side, and breaking that back door will put attacking forces immediately in your production/tech.
The middle watchtower, whats the point? How far past the cliffs surrounding it can it see?
Taking a third would feel awkward.
That resources in the natural could use some breathing room.

Now, here're somethings that you definitely did right!
The LOS blockers in the middle would be really cool (XWT kinda makes them useless though)
The map just looks cool.
Nice texture blocking.
There's a nice variety in heights without it seeming overdone.

I'm looking forward to v2!

Do you mean the current LoS blockers are good, or would you like to see more? The current ones are seperating the 'sandarea' from the 'grassarea'. I will put up a screenshot in the update.

I mean they are good but mostly useless. Because there's the XWT right next to them that can see through them.

Great job on the map Karot, I'm very happy that you keep updating it! just played it and it was quite awesome to play on, I imagine its good for all match ups! more macro style though like BW :D.

Hey I watched a game on this yesterday involving PaPoolee and I was quite impressed with how much thought had been put into the layout, sort of like a mix between Steppes and Blistering, but with a more reasonable distance between the main and natural and destructible rocks. It certainly looked like it made it easier to defend except for maybe against a highly mobile army/harass, but that can be difficult on any map. I like how the middle sort of encourages confrontation of forces but this map might be a bit terran favoured due to chokes near high ground/xel naga advantages for siege/thor through the middle of the map, though the map is quite large so that might not be too much of an issue, it may require people to keep more tabs on the position of their opponents army which isn't necessarily a bad thing but hopefully will not result in base trading. Anyway, I think it is a good map and I hope you continue to update it!

Also I've entered into the Map of the Month tourney as a mapper. I know I wont get picked (theres some amazing maps there) but Im looking for more feedback!

Well, thanks for that i guess

Its my first map, surely theres more to say about it... Be it the texturing, doodadism (?) or gameplay ...

yes, the textures seem reasonable, but plain.
yes it looks like a photocopy of all the iccup or blizz (let's take no chances) map.
(however that's a good thing on tl, just not gonna make it stand out from all the others, you can't have it both ways)

i think the no hate is a self explanatory, but no comments means no bump..; so

Thanks I spose thats a good thing right

Im way not good enough to make maps that look like a professional mapmaker made them. So why not focus on the gameplay more?

PaPooLee has playtested this map a few times, Ive played against him and against a few more people. Theres not much I can find myself that I can add to the map (or take out) to make it better. Is there anyone who would be willing to playtest it on EU? Its published.
