We all have been there... all your friends are offline and you don't feel like doing any 1v1s. I guess its time for a 3v3 or 4v4 you say? You decide to do a 4v4 because you figure out of the three other players, at least one has to be semi decent

So you click 'find game' and join a game after a short wait. You join the game and the first thing the people say...

"Im getting voids!"
"Teching BCs"
"Going Mutas/Broodlords"

At that point, I usually do a facepalm because I realize that I got stuck with the typical people who will just die when the enemies scout your team and realize that no one has anything early game.

My question is how can you make the most of random team games. I personally play zerg and try to go a safer build, getting units early regardless of what my teammates are doing. Sometimes you will get lucky and end up with decent players Sure it isn't often but when I see people actually have a plan and do something as simple as sending a worker to scout, it makes me happy inside!

Discuss what your typical plans are for winning a random 3v3 or 4v4.

Usually, I plan to go mass a fun unit, like infestors, ravens, high templar, sentries + zealots, etc.

Until I get the econ to be able to mass said units, I just get a good mix of inexpensive early game units, like roach + zergling, marines, or zealot stalker + sentry.

That seems to save me, and if I need to, I can use it to help my allies as well.

Obviously it's time to go into hero boss mode and hold a 1v4 until your teammates can get their one voidray, one bc, one broodlord kill combo out. Then you're all set. Maybe.

Last time someone massed voids (against me, 3v3) they pooled resources from a second player and had 4 stargates up, just pumping em out. The force is too mobile to shut down without KNOWING its coming and with a decent wall in its hard to break in time to shut it down. Keep in mind I'm talking a solid 20 voids just rambling around the map destroying whatever shows up.

Personally I make speed reapers and just run them around baiting people while my teammates tech. If we get pushed we die, if I keep them busy, we win. Alternatively if my teammates aren't playing Super-Tech, then I standard bio-ball and just A-move.

I don't plan on winning in random 3v3 or 4v4. Your teammates will let you down, and you can't beat 3 or 4 other people by yourself. When I do play it I just try to do something fun. Sometimes shenanigans like cloaked banshees or dark templar can steal a win but it's not too common. A lot of times you can play solid macro and do well but they will usually notice that you're good and gang up on you. But I don't care about my team ratings, I just worry about 1v1

I do play some 2v2 but I make sure to have a partner, not random.

bleh..

i actually like to play terran in 3v3/4v4, and T is my worst race...
But if all your allies are just going to dick around getting mass voids or mutas i think T is the best... You get a nice early game army which can hit both air and ground and doesn't get hard countered until tier 3..

Unlike say, blink stalkers... which will lose in a fight to the MM ball. Or roach/ling, which would lose straight up to air. And you know you won't be able to count on your allies for anti-air (and you absolutely don't want to build hydras cuz they suck).

ok so how do i enjoy myself in 3v3 / 4v4 games...? I usually pick builds requiring heavy micro, like blink stalker / dt, zling/bling with overlord drop is another good one, most people don't expect baneling drops in 3v3.. Kind of map dependent though.

protoss 2 base phoenix are a riot in 3v3. Terran i just try to tank up a choke and micro 2-3 dropships around doing drops while rallying infantry to the tanks to keep it safe.

I figure if i work on the micro stuff during 3v3s/4v4s then it'll be a little bit easier in 1v1.

Just be the first to tell people around. I usually do this, and even if I am a mediocre player, and the tactics I order may not be the best in the world, just HAVING a common tactic makes all the difference in the world.

This way you may also lead people out of funky and suicide tactics or insane macro without any sort of early defence. Yeah, of course sometime people just won't listen or are simply unable to play, but if you get lucky and the other team has a useless guy too, you'll be on par or better.

I just aim to have fun. My latest fun build is getting overlord speed, drops and 40 +1 attack speedlings by 7 minutes and dropping them in one guy's base and then booking it out with the overlords, rinsing and repeating. Since it's so gas light, I can get carapace and all the other tech at pretty much the same time and stockpile gas until I get a handful of ultras to drop in their mineral lines. Cleaning up speedlings in your base has to be one of the most annoying things there is in the game and if the other person is bad, you'll get the mineral line easily.

I use that protoss build order perfection tool. Where I typed in 4 dark templars, and I can now warp them in about 6.30. Which means that no one is prepared for DTs except terrans who got scans for the lulz. So i rush in and take out their main, and split those DTs up. I can win entire games alone with that strat.

The thing you have to remember is that you're not playing with two newbs, you're playing with FIVE. No matter how bad the guys on your team may seem, chances are the other guys are even worse. The fact that you have a guy who can actually macro/micro on your team (that's you btw) already gives you a large advantage, you just have to avoid losing to one of many retarded ways like:

- unscouted cheese/all-ins
- not fighting together (if your ally loses everything 1v3 then you're usually screwed)
- getting trapped out of position
- letting them take too many expansions unchecked

If you just play solid macro and aim to tech to something which can fight mass air then you should be able to win a fair amount of games.

I'm a low level player and I've been using 3v3s and 4v4s to build up my mechanics. I really don't plan on winning; I just try to play as well as possible, and macro as much as I can. Sometimes I will run a build order that I've been working, but I've been playing random so I usually just focus on not getting supply blocked, building workers, and expanding regularly. I've been able to improve my play tremendously with all of the low pressure experience.

Besides that, 4v4s especially are a fantastic place to try stupid or cheesy strategies and see what you can get away with. I had a game were one of my Terran allies packed up his SCVs and flew to the gold expo at the start of the game. A few minutes later, he tried to land 6 CCs throughout our opponents' mains and Planetary fortress rush all of them... It failed horribly, but it was absolutely amazing/hilarious to watch. In a different game, I randomly decided to mass carriers (our lame duck died and bequeathed his trust fund upon us). I spent the rest of the game fondly remembering FMP in BW while a-move steamrolling base after base. More importantly, I saw how surprisingly well even small numbers of carriers performed against hydralisks which inspired the carrier rush that I keep in my back pocket against Zerg.

Really just have fun with the situation you're given and only really focus on your own play. No one is going to mesure you by your 3v3 and 4v4 record and you can't control the quality of gamers your paired with. Just go out and enjoy yourself and, if you realize that you're going to lose, make sure you make it a replay worth saving.
Honestly, building probes is a more useful skill toi have.

I prefer 2v2 because often times even if your teammate is really bad, as long as he made SOMETHING you can win practically a 1v2. In 3v3 or 4v4, good luck with that. I can think of one game where I literally went 1v3, but there were some weird circumstances (perfect positioning, perfect forcefields, the kids literally didn't even try to micro, they just killed my teammate's whole base and probably weren't building anything when that was going on, etc.).
Apologize.

Most people play 3s and 4s for fun. When you get into the Diamond level for random, you have to mass T1 units. IF you have the apm, try to convince your allies to attack early. Scout early and use the information you have to further convince your allies to attack. Also, veto the maps that favor an econ game (more than 1 base). If your teammates try to tech or build econ then you are likely fucked.
All good things must come to an end. Therefore, SC2 will last forever

For me, 3's and 4's random is for achievements. Anybody who does otherwise doesn't understand that the majority of 3's and 4's random players go straight for the *i win* units

Random team games can help you practice scouting, watching the minimap, early game micro and super rush builds. Unless you actively lose a lot of games you will need to mass some tier 1 to have any hope of delaying to mid-late game. If you're halfway decent then you can win a longer game purely from superior macro. There have been some 4v4 games where I lose two of my teammates early and we still win from double expoing and macroing hard.

What you absolutely cannot do is use any normal 1v1 builds, unless you like to auto-lose ~50% of your games. You really, really, need to build units early and scout as there will be an early push in the overwhelming majority of games.

You also really learn the importance of scouting and watching the minimap. Positioning is even more important when the armies are huge and with big maps it is very important to know what is happening to your teammates to know when they need help.

I play random team games to play around with the other races and just play in a much lower stress environment than 1v1s. If you lose a team game it's usually because one of your teammates did something incredibly stupid. So as long as you go into it expecting to lose then there's no pressure. I have a record of 91-48 in random 4v4 diamond, so it is possible win fairly consistently, but you shouldn't expect it.

I do 4s rt with a friend of mine, and 2 random allys. We do well. He goes bcs, carriers, mutas, guardians, anything. I do reapers usually, for fun. And then just mass infantry. It's a joke of a game and very easy to play sometimes lol

I'm 14-0, hes 55-13 I think. 4s is our high time together, we both take time off solo to do some RT 4s lol

I don't think 4s rt is anything like a real game experience. I can make hellions ALL game and just eco kill every player and we'll win, it's simple stuff that RT players can't adapt to or micro out of.
Unbiased biased terran abuser Jeffrey. Sorry for the rage, friend!

I love pissing off the other team in random 3s and 4s so I generally go 5 rax reaper and harass all game or go double port cloaked banshees. In a lot games, this enough for them to gg and you straight up AND will improve your micro so there's that. Also, mass nuke rushing is fun (defensive nukes ftw) and hallucinating mass col or something is fun too. Too bad 3s and 4s are all about early rushes or tech rushes in sc2 because 3s were so fun in sc1

I usually like to do those mass one unit builds in random team games, only I expand ridiculously fast so I can get them out much faster.
