Can we start making progress and actually use good maps for tournaments and ladder? I honestly cannot believe 12 years of brood war, 4 months of Beta and 1 month through retail we haven't learned anything and are still using completely garbage and imbalanced maps. I mean some of these maps are just SO bad and so imbalanced its hilarious. Every single map favors Terran versus Zerg as they all have zero space to maneuver and with the terrible wide open seconds and impossible to get thirds. 90% of them favor gigantic All in's with these terrible back doors and wide open ramps. Cant forget that having cliffs everywhere and random terrain is amazing map design as well!
I honestly think if we get GOOD maps like Fighting Spirit, Destination, Luna, Blue Storm, Match Point etc 50% of the problems with the game will go away, even though obviously there will still need to be balance changes. We cant call tournaments truly competitive when were playing on straight garbage. Pretty much we cant accept mediocrity from blizzard for the future of ESPORTS and competitive gaming~
I would like to acknowledge ICCUP for them having there own mini tournament involving all custom made maps. This a decent start, but honestly every single tournament should be using Broodwar maps by now or at least good custom made maps. We cannot call the game competitive and ESPORTS ready when we are using the worst maps known to man kind~

The difference is not the actual design imo, but the size of the sc2 maps. As many have already pointed out, they are way too small for any type of positioning play. In sc1 late game was all about positioning. It was so exciting to see those big 200/200 armies move across the minimap, in sc2, a 200/200 army would basically cover the whole minimap (exaggeration..).

"Dustin Browder: . . . Ladder maps are smaller and less complicated on purpose because they have to serve a much wider community than the top 1% of players. We expect that professional players will be making their own maps and we will see more and more of those in tournament play going forward."
Blizzard doesn't expect or necessarily even want ladder maps to be "professional" maps. IIRC, the GSL is planning on staying on Blizzard maps "up to the semifinals", so maybe they'll introduce new maps for the semis. That might be a good way to get better maps into tournament play.
