Scenario:
So, I was taking a dump and I forgot my book, so I came up with this scenario to keep me occupied while on the pooper:
If you met someone who had never been exposed to the internet and you only had enough time to tell them the addresses of five websites that they should absolutely know about, what websites would you list?
My personal 5 in order of importance would have to be:
1) Wikipedia 2) Youtube 3) Hulu 4) Facebook 5) Teamliquid
Reasonings:
1) Wikipedia is pretty much the sum of human knowledge. Obvious #1 for me. 2) Youtube is an epic time-sink. So much to see, and new stuff comes out daily. Easy #2. 3) Why ever watch regular T.V. again? I've spent so much time on Hulu and I think they would too. 4) The #1 social networking (yay for buzzwords!) website. Heck, even my grandparents use this thing. 5) Of course TL makes the list. Along with endless starcraft info, this is also where I get most of my general news. Great diversity of people along with excellent moderating keeps things very worldly and enjoyable.
Notes:
I didn't add Google to this list on purpose. I think that while Google is omnipotent and may actually take over the world some day, it is not absolutely essential to know about. There are so many search engines that do just as good of a job.
Conclusion:
So, what do you guys think? What would make your top 5 most important websites? Try to give a bit of reasoning like I did to your picks. Remember, the person has had no contact with the internet before, although you can assume they are smart enough to figure out the websites you are recommending.
RESULUTS!
So I tallied up the results as of page 6. I combined gmail/google as just google and yahoo and hotmail as just yahoo. If someone provided two lists, I discounted the personal list and just tallied the essential list. I also threw away all websites that only had one nomination. Here are the top 10 results:
1) Google - 65 2) Teamliquid - 58 3) Youtube - 56 4) Wikipedia - 42 5) Facebook - 35 6) Yahoo - 10 7) (Tie) Twitter - 5 7) (Tie) Digg - 5 9) (Tie) Hulu - 4 9) (Tie) Reddit - 4

I only need to recommend one site
1) Google
Why? Little experience you can find any site from the web, no need to give other sites.

I don't know what are the most important(obviously wikipedia is important, but do you use it on daily basis?), but I will list the sites I use the most:
1) Youtube 2) Blinkx 3) Teamliquid 4) Facebook 5) Google
Very poetic introduction, by the way.

In no particular order, I'd say wikipedia, facebook, gmail, digg, youtube.
|
1) Google 2) Wikipedia 3) Youtube 4) Team Liquid 5) Kotaku
|
1) TeamLiquid - I waste hours on this site a day. 2) Fark - Great for wasting hours on other sites. 3) Fetish porn site - I'm not telling which. 4) Iheartchaos - Random news articles and boobies. 5) Streaming/torrent sites - More ways to waste time.
I'm glad I read the actual content of the thread and gave what the OP was asking.
But yeah, obviously Wikipedia, Google, YouTube, and the like would be what you'd recommend to some random person.

All you need is Google (or some other appreciable search engine)!
Google is the portal that easily delivers this stuff to you. It's a map of the internet. How else would you find what you're looking for?
Seriously how did you first find Wikipedia (through Google no doubt?).
The same goes for nearly everything else

1) wikipedia for all human knowledge 2) google the gateway to the internet 3) skype for free communication 4) grooveshark for free music 5) youjizz to empty my balls

one that hasnt been mentioned is answers @ yahoo. I find it useful when searching for simple questions like how to do this/that or how long does stuff hold etc.
