omg, i don't have the original version (sorry, third world country are the win in this matter) so i want to know if i can play with you guys ?

i remember i played colonization (Ages ago) civ2 very well, and alfa centaury also, and then civ4 (but i didn't enjoyed it as much as civ2) so Civ5 would be fun :D maybe playing like this will be awesome :O.

i even registered in a forum where they played like this and competed against each other and it was freaking awesome with awersome posts.
In the beginning there was nothing... and then exploded

And f*ck Firaxis for being an ass on this thing, how the hell Original version buyer can not load the deluxe version save...that just shows some very weak coding or very greedy developer

Go ahead and roll out, Brownbear. Hate to skip someone when we have so few players but I shouldn't have waited a week or however long for this guy to show up.

Caphe, you're added. You'll be next.

Gather round, friends, and let me tell you the tale of the great Liquidian Empire. Having prospered mightily during the reign of Polarn the Great, the empire then fell to BrownBear the Untested. Here is the world as I recieved it:

Isn't it beautiful?

The first thing I noticed upon seeing our mighty empire was the 1 total Happiness we have. This is a minor problem, as both our cities are growing quickly, and I really do not want our empire to fall into the red in terms of happiness. To solve this, I switch both Paris and Liquidia over to a production focus, which dials back the growth significantly, and has the added benefit of boosting their build times quite a bit.

Paris, after the switch. This cut a full 7 turns off the granary's production.

Also, Spear Hwaiting is doing quite well for himself down there (how did you rename him btw?)

I choose Writing as our first tech, because I tend to play more science-focused, and want to get some libraries up and running. As soon as it finishes, I start construction of a Library in Liquidia while I start researching Masonry, with the aim of getting Construction for Colosseums to boost our happiness.

Around this time, Elizabeth asks for Open Borders, and I accept. Might as well keep her happy for now.

I also realize we have calendar researched and two cotton resources next to Paris, so I start building Plantations on those. Then, the next social policy ticks! I choose Representation, because the culture boost is nice and because we haven't reached the medieval age yet, so I can't start Commerce (which is an amazing social policy tree and really helps your economy out a ton).

Culture, Culture, Culture!

Bucharest then contacts us, asking us to wipe out a Barbarian Encampment. Sure, no problem, let me just see where this encampment is...

Yeah, you know what, nevermind.

Throughout this, I've been constructing another spearman. Spear Hwaiting might be epic, but he's currently stuck on the other side of the continent, and a barbarian encampment has sprang up next to us, so our new Spearmen go out to deal with it.

haha, take that, stupid brutes!

OH HOLY JESUS FUCK

I'm forced to insta-heal instead of promote our new spearman to prevent him from getting wasted by the barbs, which makes me feel stupid. Ah well.

aww hell yeah
Golden Age begins, I guess we weren't in as bad shape happiness-wise as I thought. With that in mind, I decide it's time to expand again, this time to up here:

The iron is nice, as is the coastal location. Very picturesque.

Some guy measures up the penis size of every single great leader, sadly we don't match up so well:

dammit!

So I beef up our army. We now have archers in both capitals, as well as a third regiment of spearmen. Time to go barb-hunting. My goal is to send our newest spearguys down to deal with the barbs close to us, while the first group I made goes out to save Helinski's butt, and hopefully net us an ally in the process.

ITS KILLING TIME

The encampment near us goes down, no problem, but killing it reveals yet another scary, fully healed unit right next to it...

oh COME ON

This is bad; if I run away, I'll just get shot, and if I charge them I die. I just fortify and hope to god they decide not to shoot until I'm healed enough to take them out.

Meanwhile, our new city is founded! It looks pretty good, it's just missing something...

Awwwww yeah...

In the interest of not making this go too long, I'll speed up a bit. Spear Hwaiting meets the city state of Genoa and then helps them out with some barbarians, raising our influence with them a little bit (not enough to become buddies though). Darius and I sign another open borders treaty, which affects absolutely nothing. Then, we get a new social policy, leaving me with a very tough choice:

Not in the medieval era yet. Dammit.

Normally, post-liberty I go straight to commerce, but I forgot to actually get to the medieval era first. This leaves me with a serious problem. The final policy in Liberty isn't very good (we haven't even connected our cities yet), so normally I would go Piety, but going Piety cuts off Rationalism (one of the best late-game policy trees IMO). After hemming and hawing for a while, I just finish out the Liberty Tree. I'm already in the process of building roads, so we should get that benefit reasonably soon, and hopefully by the next time a policy rolls around, we'll have more choices.

The spearmen reach their destination, and charge in to break the encampment:

alright guys, we got this! Only need to inflict 4 damage...

Fail...

If I knew how to rename units, I would have renamed him SpearFail. As it turned out, he got wrecked by the full-health spearman next turn, so it didn't matter.

And that's all she wrote. Here's the world as I left it:

After hemming and hawing for a while, I just finish out the Liberty Tree.

Why not just ... not get a policy for now? Save your policy for the medieval era. My most recent game I didn't get any policies till I unlocked Rationalism.

Also, re: Representation: it always seemed pointless to me (and doubly so for Napoleon!) because you're spending culture to get more culture, but in the long run you just slow down getting more actually useful policies. The only time I would ever grab it is if I'm going for a culture win.

Not a bad idea, I'll remember that next time, lol. Still not very good at this game, working at getting better though :/

Is anyone else having trouble closing out cultural victories, by the way? I always seem to end up 1 or 2 policies short...

Yeah, you can right click and save the policy for later .
You have 48 hours to finish your turns.
I play through 25 turns today, but I'm not satisfied so I'll replay a bit then post the save and some report tomorrow.
I think we have to aim for a Science victory, not sure though

Cultural victory can be tricky, but keeping your Civ fairly small (and puppeting anything from war instead of annexing) should help loads. Saving up culture for policies you don't need just yet until you can get discounts on your policies (Free Speech, Cristo Redentor) is an easy way to sneak in some extra policies in case you fell behind.

Don't forget to use Artist specialists, and cultural city states can push you in the right direction even further.
Without struggle, no progress and no result. Every breaking of habit produces a change in the machine.

Continue in the footstep of BrownBear, I take on the command of the great Liquidian Empire. Our nation has been properous for many years, will it continue to do so with me in command. Read on, friends to find out why Liquidian Empire will emerge to be the greatest nation among the like of England, Persia, China....

BrownBear left me a great treasure - the city of "A Fruit Stand" with 2 IRONS within its border. I immediately work on the Iron. With this we will be safe untill the Industrial Era.

Realized that we have some extra luxury resource, and gold is always important, I start to look around for some trading. Not surprising Songhai has the most gold of all known leader. Trade 2 resource with him for total 500 gold.

While I was busy trading, a Barbarian camp pop up near Paris
[image loading]
and Elizabeth our a "friendly" neighbour show up for some Open Border agreement which I approved
[image loading]

All things aside, with all the gold we made, its time for some LAND buying, yummy!!.

I'm quite happy that the people of Liquidian Empire live in a very peaceful times, we only have some Barbarian to fight. We even make a friend with City States of Helsinki after eliminated some Barbs near there city
[image loading]

In Civ5, Gold is just to good to ignore, I ordered a land reformed, most farm land is being transform into trading post. With Currency tech going up, we will be able to output alot of gold. Take a quick look at Liquidia in the middle renovation
[image loading]

With farm being reform into trading post, our land will have no food to grow. Well, its time for our friend Helsinki to step in. Already a friend of them. With a mere 250 gold gift, Liquidian Empire and Helsinki are now Ally, thats will net us 4 food in the capital and 2 food on every cities, with an additional of Gems!!!

With that taken care of, its time for some expansion. Land is gold, and gold is victory :D. So I noticed some good land on the west side of Liquidia, it has Ivory, Horse and some cattle with an additional fish title on the lake.
Settler guarded by a Swordman is moving out for the new land

At the same time, out Spearman near the English border just take down a Barb camp and find an English worker in it.... We have an option to return it to the English or just take it. Very easy decision, we will just TAKE it
[image loading]

Meanwhile, Wuzetian of China show up for some Pact of Secrecy which I rejected.
Lady in red

Our new city is established, I immediately purchase some key title around it.

When I began my turns, I built a scout to run around a bit, 20 turns later he's been kill in a far away land. But his life is not wasted by any means. He fought bravely with 2 Barb spearmans. And that is the last drop to make a GREAT GENERAL appear in the city of " A Fruit Stand"
Notice that star in the city...yeah thats him!

We also got a new policy, but I didnt use it, I want to go for Patronage but I'll let the next great leader decide. I also tech to Education, and now taking Acoustics to advance into the next Era.

With that it seems my time has run it course. This is the Empire after my reign.

That's it for my report :D. I think we can take the science victory path from now on. And be ally of one more Marinetime city states is also good!.

I'm still far from mastering Civ5, but if I may ask, what encouraged you to buy land? Maybe it's just me, but if our city has 10 population (for example) then we only need 10 tiles to work. Given that Napoleons special ability expands our culture fairly fast, maybe that money could be better put to use.

Getting ran out of this computer lab, oops. Will finish this post later, or respond to anyone who answers. Its a genuine question of mine- not necessarily an argument.

@BrownBear, I didnt rename...yeah could have though of that
@Nokarot, buying land is good. Since not like in Civ4, In Civ5 city border expands very slow and if your city is growing fast, you need to purchase some land.
The other situation is, your city is just out of reach of a important resource, so buying that ASAP is important. And when your city is very near cities of others civ, buying land will also prevent his Civ not expanding.
