“Watching H.O.T oppas, I dreamed of becoming of singer”.



Younha 4th album <Supersonic>, before its release she showed off her flowery-looks in a pictorial. Her doll-like looks makes the readers feel reminiscent of a teenage girl, she has returned after a year and half to the public. This album attracted the hottest artists in the nation for its producing, raising the anticipation for the fans. Recently unlike girl groups being recognized for looks, Younha has been recognized not just as a singer-songwriter but also as an actor, and opening up the path of being an all-around entertainer. From a lively girly emotion to overflowing charisma rock bass, we see her attempts in a new transformation this time by Younha.

“Recently lots of girl group are promoting as units, but since I’m alone it’s sometimes difficult to handle it by yourself. But when I’m standing on the stage, all the fans are looking at me, I feel great delight.”

Younha through a press interview she showed her thoughts comparing herself and girl groups.

“It’s true. Lately you say a day lasts long, and numerous rookie girl groups to show off their slim figures they wear revealing outfits and artificially produced sounds to meet the public.”

Through fans notice, the rising bliss.

Since debut showing her skills as a singer-songwriter, Younha is in a different level than any girl group. By not putting herself as a product and acquiring popular appeal, but as a true musician she acquired many niche fans. Going on the stage playing the piano personally and stable vocals, she has appealed her lively ‘girlish emotions’ to the public.

Coming back with the 4th album <Supersonic> after a year and a half, Younha participated personally in the writing and producing with ‘Set me free’, ‘HOPE’, in total 12 songs are included and with a rock bass focus produced ‘Run’ was selected as the title song and showed Younha’s music has matured. Amongst them ‘HOPE’ is the song Younha feels most attached to, to show her thanks to the fans she wrote/produced this song.

“Sunbaes tell me ‘You suffered through a lot’, “‘The song is good’ and complimented me a lot. So I felt great but I’m curious how the listeners will receive it. Until now if most of my songs were soft and tender, this time a slightly aggressive feeling rock bass song is included so I’m curious about the response. After the release there were comments like I grew up a level, I think my intentions was expressed well in the song.”

In this album, something that changed is that top level artists have been mass included. Tiger JK, Cho Gyu Chan, Park Jae Bum, John Park, etc gladly did featuring in Younha’s comeback album.

“To Tiger JK whom I’ve had no previous connection, I barely found out his contact and sent the song, and after two months he gave positive feedback and succeeded in getting his participation in the album. Also creating friends through radio, contacting Park Jae Bum for the first time he agreed readily. For John Park he came to our recording studio personally and ended up recording together.”

Through the movie <Suspicious Customers> (수상한 고객들) she transformed into an actor. Within her role she struggles making a living, but becomes a breadwinner through her love of music. Younha’s natural acting is being favorably received.

“After trying acting I understand people and it helped a lot when I worked on producing. In the past I had a negative image about all-around entertainers, but now I have a desire to try other things. Still compared to acting, singing is much more exciting for me.”

Personifying the 90’s teenager, while watching the male 5-person dance group H.O.T she tells her story of dreaming of becoming a singer and being active in H.O.T’s fan club.

“Watching them perform ‘I want to stand on a magnificent stage like that. But at this young age is that possible’ I thought like that a lot. Soon after BoA sunbaenim debuted and realized the potential for debuting. Just to meet H.O.T oppas, with naive thoughts I dreamt of debuting.”



Life’s turning point.

Starting music officially and falling into rock band music, dreaming to become the Korean Avril Lavigne, Younha. Returning after a year and a half, she has grown up to be an adult producing music to become a positive effect and a turning point for all listeners. Instead of a popular song, wanting it to blend in the public’s everyday life to communicate fully with the listeners, we applaud her efforts and passion.

‘After the rain the ground becomes solid’.

Dispute with her management company, after a long year and a half not performing on the stage, coming back stronger than before ‘the icon of hardship’.

“My body and mind was hurting. Through laryngitis and shingles, it was tough. Having bloody pus on my scalp… putting spray on my hair in the salon, if it reached the scalp because of the intense pain, I often cried from it. I couldn’t trust anyone.”

3rd of this month, 4th full album ‘Supersonic’ returning to the embrace of the fans, is singer Younha (full name Ko Youn Ha). Her comeback is welcome.

“Thinking I could not perform as a singer anymore, after that this album is feels unique. Around two years of time is really long. I think I can understand some of my friends who finished their military service. After developing social phobia I spent many days alone, but in the end coming back like this I’m happy.”

2011 April, Younha who filed a lawsuit against Lion Media to cancel her exclusive contract, and the company who filed a countersuit came to an agreement this February. The Seoul Central District Court rules Lion Media to pay accounts payable amount of 100 million wons ($88,762 USD) was the decision.



▶’Oricon’s Comet, the next BoA’

Unlikely participant in Younha’s 4th album ‘Supersonic’, Yu Hee Yeol, also includes Kim Byung Suk, Score etc people who Younha have worked together before. Among the 12 songs, 4 songs are written and produced personally by Younha.

“This album doesn’t contain efficiency. Different from exchanging data back and forth in the past, this time from start to finish I was involved. Long time and after sharing emotions the songs were made, when working on each song I can even remember what I ate in between them.”

Younha mentions how desperately and intensely she carried on her recordings. She says before the album released, “The only way to express myself is music” and “The only thing I could do was recording”.

“Just maybe. Compared to appealing to the masses in previous albums, it was different. If the songs have truth and touch your heart, I think that is appealing to the public.”

“I threw away the burden that I had to show the ‘Younha’ I’ve already shown. I focused on what defines me. (laugh) After wrapping up the producing, then I started to worry.”

Younha is a singer with a wide spectrum. From pop to rock, band music to other various genres of songs, asking how she does it, “compared to other female artists my vocal chord’s key is higher. My lower notes are weak so trying to save the feelings of sadness and longing it ends up to keep raising the notes.”

“John Park did not debut not too long ago, but he’s a real veteran. He understands the duet song perfectly. I was a fan of Tiger JK sunbaenim I wanted to challenge myself so I requested. He accepted readily so I was thankful.”

Hardships helped Younha grow mature. When she could not go on the stage through mental and physical pain developed a social phobia, and spent most of her time alone at home. Starting last year May 9th, Younha started as a DJ on the MBC Radio program ‘On a Starry Night’ which helped heal some of it.

“Broadcasting is important, but performing is the most important. What can I do to not disappoint the fans is my primary goal. ‘Immortal Song 2’ when the PD nim first offered I was thankful and appeared on the show."

Although 5 teams asked to sing the song ‘Let my dreams unfold’, my manager through a raffle picked it out. It was a chance given by heaven to express my desperation (to perform).

“Honestly until now I was busy doing my songs. I wanted to be the best. Because I was young, I was able to receive the image of an unyielding girl carving out her own path. But through this I learned the importance of the love and support I’ve received. Once an intoxicated ahjussi asked me to sign a receipt I felt unpleasant but during the time I rested my thoughts changed. Everything became thankful.”

Younha also during her break took an interest for baking. She wanted to try making bread with her fans and sharing them as volunteering. She is practicing it when she gets spare time.



▶Singing Younha, “I want to become strength for everyone”.

What kind of differences would the current 9th year singer have with her past? While living through tough times, we were curious on her resolve to continue as a singer.

“At first I started singing because it was so fun. Many people have provided this place for me, now I want to be a source of strength to people who need it. In the past I thought it was for me to do well, but now it’s the opposite.”

In the approaching 28th, Younha is performing at Seoul Kwangjingoo AX-Korea and August 11th at Busan Lotte Hotel Art Hall with a comeback concert. (Read that 28th one was two and a half hours :3) For these concerts she says, “I want to create stages with lots of auditory satisfaction” and for people coming to enjoy the concert requesting them, “don’t come wearing high heels.”

“As time goes on everyone will live their own life, even after a long time I want to be a singer with memorable music. For all the fans, I hope my name becomes an enjoyable word in your thoughts.”

“As much as the empty time, my desire to go on the stage grew stronger. To contain those feelings while looking for words to fit that, I found the word ‘Supersonic’. It means, ‘A sound faster than the speed of sound’, it really got my attention.”



◆For a year in an underground producing studio making, ‘momentary records’.

Through a conflict with the management company, Younha had to experience an unintentional resting period. That time must have a toll on her mind, but she showed a resolute appearance. Almost tough as experiencing ‘growing pains’, she became hardened up and her strong mind is remain intact in this album.

“This album is made of records of small moments. I put the variety of emotional change directly in. While working and living together for a year in the Yangjaedong basement studio, this album was produced. It’s music that contains ‘human feelings’*, so my affection for this music is really unique."

[*‘희로애락’ – ‘Hee-ro-ae-rak’ – is a four lettered word created in Chinese characters that contains the human emotions: joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure(happiness)]

Amongst the songs besides the title song, ‘People’ contains the emotions she felt from people’s quitting times, and when she went to work for her radio broadcast. She explains the song is meant to comfort the all the people that are tired and exhausted, as she introduces the song one can feel Younha’s warmth. Like that for around a year she came as a radio DJ for the program “Starry night”, to her who had a passive personality it was an escape.

“Radio, it really made me into a person. My personality style, if I encounter even a small difficulty I seal up my confidence. So in a time where it was tough to even pick up a phone call, radio was a godsend.”

For Younha that was used to deliver a message to someone, through her radio position she mentions that she learned how to listen to other people’s stories. After lending an ear, naturally she also says it helped her manage her human relations. She shows her will to become a musician to ‘transmit’ and ‘receive’ together.

“Through radio I heard numerous stories. Especially with the “Special Counseling Center’ corner, there were many heavy stories, but I also felt many things through that. ‘Ah there are struggling people like this’, thinking that I disciplined my soft self. Those kinds of emotions were projected a lot into the music.”



◆”Thankful to people who went through the end the dark tunnel with her”

“The strongest support was my manager oppa. Trusting someone trusts them with your life. In a meeting thinking of who I could trust, my manager oppa always trusted me. Always ‘You’re awesome. You can do it’ saying these hopeful messages to me, he was a great support.”

“At the end of the production I was at a loss. But truthfully I can’t relax like that. For the fans waiting, I thought it was worth taking the risk. The standard of picking this work is to meet the expectation of all my cheering fans. After a while that became the standard of selecting my work. So for those moments I tried my best and poured my all into it.”

A song about unending passion, songs made by Younha ‘Set Me Free’ and ‘Hope’s atmosphere are different. One can find out what kind of thing she faced during her time not promoting.

“’Set Me Free’ is when I felt the most desperate. I thought I could do okay again, but it didn’t end up well. It felt like an endless darkness. However it’s a good record to reflect back on.

While doing ‘Starry Night’ and while meeting many guests, she wrote ‘Hope’ of her envy of those live by the guests, a song showing her desire to be on the stage. In the chorus part she mentions that she imagined singing with the fans, and Younha even gave homework to her fans to definitely practice this song.

Already 9 years since her debut, for 24 years old Younha there has been many mental changes. She says music projects the person and if you can’t be a good person you can’t do music.

“When I was young, with determination and ambition ‘I have to beat everyone’ thoughts were my goals. Maybe since I did music with a sense of competition, I sometimes had thoughts of giving up. But now I think of this as working together with the people around me, instead of standing alone. It’s like fate*.”

Now taking the greeting ‘thank you’ to heart, minus her musical area she mentions the part that changed the most was her ‘attitude’. Also with the start of ‘Starry Night’ she says made a savings account and from now on she won’t just look at a guy’s ‘face’ anymore and lightly touched on her views on love.

“Dating, I did my best. Right now there’s no one sadly… After performances and it becomes more freely shouldn’t I start again? (laugh) I many ideas from watching past dramas and movies, recently from watching ‘I Do I Do’ I got inspired. For girls, Park Tae Gang(Actor Lee Jang Woo)’s character is really fatal."



◆ “The dream of 6 billion populations listening to my music… Musicians can have absurd dreams”.

Watching dramas occasionally and receiving ideas, Younha is pure and bright. To the question of, ‘What dream do you want to fulfill’ she responded “The 6 billion population all listening to my music” and, “Musicians can have absurd dreams”. She also mentions, “I am one of those people with special privileges”.

Sometimes in situations where she could not enjoy time with her friends were the reason, but thinking about it now she says she felt disappointed at herself. Younha also mentions when she sees people receiving hope and searching for their dreams from her music, that she feels touched to the point of getting goose bumps.

“(Concert) While practicing I thought a lot to myself ‘Will the seats fill up? If it was empty I was worried if the atmosphere would be strange… but if I pay attention to the empty spots I can’t see the people who are in those seats. I can’t do that. I’ll think of those empty spots as the loss of people who couldn’t come (laugh)”

Approaching 27th Seoul, and in August 11th Younha’s who’s hosting a concert, for Younha she feels the pressure but doesn’t show any sign of that, a musician with tenacity.

‘What is your ultimate end in your pursuit?’ [in Music I believe] to that question, she says “I want to make memorable music” and, “While having a baby and doing the housework, after listening to your own song and falling into the fragrant youthful times, I want to make that kind of music”.

For a solo female artist uncommon in the music world, Younha’s existence is special. Younha who returned to us with this album, because it’s filled with a variety of genres and tracks filled with completeness, it’s more pleasant to hear. Becoming more solid and mature, Younha started her promotion full scale. While expecting good things for Younha, here’s to her successful Run without turning back.

“You lost lots of weight and became more pretty”, to those kinds of compliments Younha responds, “Not that I got rid of it, it came off eventually. [refer to next sentence] I did Pilates a long time. My waist was bad; it’s a little over 2 years since I started. There’s a running machine at home too. I think to have a healthy mind you have to have a healthy body so I’m exercising regularly”.



With a prettier appearance, it should be included in the album jacket but this album you can’t find Younha’s face. She says, “My face did not go in, my thoughts changed a lot.”

Younha says, “Until last album I had thoughts of ‘I need to beat girl groups’. While being outnumbered, I thought the solo market would be in danger if I didn’t have a competitive mindset. In a large scale I wasn’t worrying about the market, but it felt like the area where I could shine was collapsing."



“Diversity has to coexist, but since rank is being decided by placements to continue on, I had to become competitive. So I even received meridian/acupressure message and for the angles* I did leg exercise too. The intent was good, but I slowly started neglecting music.”

“Saving my music and to etching this area was my intent, but I ended up only copying those people. Since that time my thoughts started changing. While I rested, I thought of something. What I could do is something else, why did I try going that route.”



“If I try the best of my abilities, my juniors could follow my footsteps. That turned into stubbornness into effect, so I didn’t put my face in my album on purpose. Above all things, something, I put a graphic picture that could express music the best.”

“I think if you’re a solo, gradually you end up singing quiet songs. Still people do like that… also when going out to music shows if a female solo came out, there’s a feeling it’s a break time. Maybe it’s like that because of many idol fans. There was a time that I wanted to show, that’s not true.*” [*Referring to female solo = break time]

“Now that I let all that go, I definitely think there are stages only solo artists can show. While looking at Baek Ji Young sunbaenim who promoted a long time, I found strength in that. Now there are no thoughts of being lonely or trying to win. I think I passed the phase of thinking about winning or losing.”

“In the past negative energy was my driving force. ‘I’ll go and break them all, throw away my composure, and beat them’ was harsh. I think my victim mentality was harsh too. Now I know a little of being thankful, and feel it. From now on if there any female artist wanting to go solo, I hope they don’t experience my situation through trial and error.”
