“A new attempt, this is Brave Girl’s color.”

Brave Girls. They are soon reaching their 1st anniversary, and is made up of leader Eunyoung and the others Seoah, Yoojin, Yejin, and Hyeran, a 5 person girl group. Something to notice is that the songwriter Brave Brothers produced this group. Because of that from their entrance they’ve received plenty of spotlight.

Brave Brothers (Kang Dong Chul) produced Big Bang’s “Last Farewell”, “Lie” / Brown Eyed Girls “What Happened”, U-Kiss’ “Am I That Easy”, Son Dam Bi’s “Saturday Night” and “Crazy”, and Sistar’s “Push Push” etc. a hit maker songwriter, since his music has been acknowledged by the public the spotlight is obvious to fall on a group he produced himself.

In reality Brave Girls walk a slightly different road compared to other girl groups. Last year with their debut single “Do You Know” is a slow tempo close to the R&B genre, gospel style editing feel, with an 80’s black music fragrance kind of song. Cute and sexy visuals, rather than easily hooked fast tempo music girl groups, showed a clear different first step. Especially Brave Brother’s characteristic synthesizer sound, electronic rhythm’s friendly style was expected but those were blown out of the water.

Afterwards Brave Girls returned with “Easily”. This time it was reggae. Different from their first appearance, with a classic beat 80-90’s scent reminding melody, a fresh feel was commented by critics.

2012 February, Brave Girls showed a new appearance on stage. In male suit with a strong charisma is shown in the song “Nowadays You”. Another Brave Brothers product, in an electronic pop genre and a hefty drum beat, guitar riff, a talk box sound played by a mouth are noticeable in this song. While still in love with a departed lover, with a grief stricken longing sadness you cannot long for filled story and lyrics, with the Brave Girls imposingness appealed clothing concept, and with a stage performance etc. these three rhythms create a harmony.

Brave Girls who had high expectations of their comeback, we talk with them 3 weeks into their promotion. The first stage’s thrill and nervousness remain unchanged; from this thinking of each promotion as their last they reinforced their goal.


“From the first broadcast my mind was rushing. Also whenever we finish a stage the regrets are real. ‘I could’ve done better’ kind of thinking. I’m surprised it’s already been 3 weeks since our comeback” – Yejin.

“During the downtime between stages, I await the next stage. After finishing a broadcasting stage, I think ‘When’s our next stage?’ While preparing I didn’t realize we’re having a comeback, now I feel it. Like our debut it makes me nervous and excited” – Hyeran.

“People say that the more you listen to it, that it gets better so I feel great. After the first week release, because people are starting to notice Brave Girls through ‘Recently You’, I have good expectations.”

“Because it’s a different concept from last time lots of people say ‘is it a new girl group?’ Brave Girls aren’t discouraged of a new approach, and instead of just one color our hope was to show diverse appearances so I think it’s showing one of our possibilities. Wouldn’t that make ‘BeuBeuGirl’ next promotion more anticipated?” – Eunyoung.

With a little bit shocking concept of a male-like intensity well equipped Brave Girls are getting plenty of the public’s attention. In the middle of girl groups all exposing, this was an innovative approach. They had strong belief in their concept as well.


“Based on our appearance, Beubeugirl’s original musical color won’t be changed by it. Just our outward appearance and subsidiary things change. An unconventional attempt is Beubeugirl’s color." - All.

“‘Nowadays You’ with a first attempt using a talk box and in the popular electronic genre but it’s different from other group’s song and the feel. Also our concept this time is epicene and a powerful image, we expressed another color” – Yoojin.

“There are lots of viewpoints that we’re different from other girl groups. Looking in the future I think it’s a positive comment. Brave Girls can handle many genres of songs, can pull off a masculine powerfulness, also cute and pretty concepts we will continue to show.” – Eunyoung.


However attempting a new kind of style is not comfortable. There is fear and if that becomes bigger it can become worries.


“’Nowadays You’ is a strong concept so we have thicker makeup than the past and our outfits are male suits so at first it was awkward. Fortunately the public received it well so I am enjoying the stages.” – Yoojin.

“We have to instill a masculine charisma and intense appearances but I worried that our group color will become too ambiguous to fully grasp. If you ask me, instead of a charismatic side I laugh more. But we’re working as a team trying to fill our lacking qualities so I think my worries are becoming smaller now.” – Seoah.

“While promoting this time my voice is slowly becoming like a guy’s and suddenly when I greet I’m doing it like a guy too. At this rate I think I’ll start losing my male fans (laugh)” – Yejin.


Brave Girl’s new attempt now has received the public’s response. Different from the extreme exposure’s causing discussion, with long sleeves received a shocking review.


“While preparing this album we yearned for our comeback to stand on the stage. We wanted to show our song, choreography, and outfits. Also we saw a ghost thinking ‘Isn’t this a daebak this time?’ kind of hopeful talks to each other and since our expectations were high we waited for the comeback.” – Eunyoung

Talking about music their eyes glittered. Also this day was when the male group Shinhwa first revealed their plans so it naturally became a sensation. What will Brave Girls be like 10 years later?



“Right now we’re receiving songs from Brave Brothers producer but if it approaches that time won’t we be able to make our own songs, outfits, choreography and concept making to create a real Beubeugirl stage? To make that come true we have to study hard right now. Different from other groups we’re close to our producer so I think that gives us a higher possibility.” – Eunyoung.


After leader Eunyoung explained her thoughts on what she’s studying currently, they started talking about their specialties.


“I am studying songwriting at the moment. I write rap lyrics personally and presenting it and learning through that. After a little time, I do have strong interest being involved in producing as well.” – Hyeran.

“The other members say that I’m difficult when it comes to outfits. I like styling. Also I like to fantasize and think of stuff like ‘this member would look great in this style’. For me around 10 years later I want to style Brave Girls from head to toe.” – Seoah.

“Since I was young I was always surrounded my music. My mother majored in violin so I always heard her preparing for competitions. Sometimes I had to even cover my ears (laugh). Maybe because of that I learned how to play a variety of instruments such as the violin, guitar, and piano etc. and it helped a lot approaching music itself. While using my specialties, I want to try making a song” – Yejin.

“I’ve always enjoyed singing and as much in listening.” says Yoojin and other members say she “Always listens to music” and “While recording if she’s scolded she might not want to listen to music but she’s silently listening to music alone”.

“Wherever I go I’m always listening to music. I relieve my stress listening to music and get over my depression. I like listening and singing along. Song making, songwriting maybe good but so far for me singing, improving my singing and want to increase my capacity at the moment” – Yoojin.


With ‘Nowadays You’ Brave Girls opened their promotion curtains. After their 10 year long term goals they talked seriously what they wanted to accomplish this promotion.


“This promo we all feel like we debuted again, meanwhile we’ll do our best to make up what we lack and slowly show us becoming complete as artists. We’ll show a more grown up Brave Girls on stage.” – Eunyoung.

“Recently I tripped on a live stage I felt utterly bereft. I was surprised and felt depressed. From my one mistake I felt like that I wasted 3 minutes of time to show Brave Girls, it kept gnawing at me. The choreography teacher said “you did the biggest mistake you could do on stage’ and ‘from now on you have to enjoy the stage’ so that made my mind set. When we finish promoting, until the end I hope we can cheer ourselves on without regrets.” – Seoah.

In the midst of endless new groups entering and trending in a fast changing music world, almost approaching their 1st year anniversary on April Brave Girls. In a short time always a new appearance and a variety of approaches were taken, their next move is highly anticipated.


“Whenever we get the chance we want to show our hidden variety show skills. Hyeran and Yoojin are still young and silly and surprise the unnis doing unexpected things and they entertain our team atmosphere. Also leader Eunyoung unni is originally really funny but it’s sad because she never had a chance to show it.” – Seoah.


Brave Girls in their early debut they had a ‘Cold-City-Girl’ image and suffered a lot. With ‘Do You Know’ at that time a cold appearance and with them talking so little, and rumored that even reporters were scared of interviewing them.


“Even though recent juniors are popping up and we talk with a lot of other groups so I think we brightened up now. In the past there weren’t many people that approached us, but right now we don’t need our phones in the waiting room to have fun.” - All.


As the interview continued, Brave Girl’s ‘cold-city-girl’ image slowly disappeared. Particularly when talking about fans, they started bragging about them.



“We have our official 1st fan. When we were practicing and preparing our debut, we don’t know how he sent it but that fan sent us a letter that moment was so amazing and felt moved that even if we meet nowadays we greet each other.” – Hyeran.

“Also our fans are all nice and keep the order. Maybe because Brave Girls has some age, there are lots of fans that have their own cars like unni-age fans, so after from just one ‘be quiet’ word then all the situations becomes organized.” – Eunyoung.

“Whenever it’s cold and rainy days there are fans waiting outside, we felt bad so we asked them to come inside but they refused thinking it would interfere with practice, also one time a fan secretly cleaned our bathroom for us, we were very thankful.” - All.

Explanation – “When she’s using her hand phone whenever you look at her she’s always looking at delicious pictures." – Eunyoung.
Clarification – “There are lots of things I want to eat but since I have to take care of myself I can’t eat them often. Even if I want to eat ramen, It feels like a burden so I avoid it. So I use pictures as a substitute satisfaction.” – Yoojin.

Explanation – "When Eunyoung-unni becomes curious she find out everything. Even small things you can look over she’s looking it up and always her curiosity is overflowing. But little by little I think she’s becoming an expert scholar. I think she could’ve been fine as a doctor.” – Hyeran.
Clarification – “Honestly even I don’t know why. I’m just curious. If I wonder about something my style is that I find out what it is and it becomes solved.” – Eunyoung.

[When Hyeran ‘took’ she cannot hear]
Explanation – “While we’re looking at each other and talking she asks what I just said. If I’m a ‘why?’ then for Hyeran she is a ‘yes?’ person." - Eunyoung.
Clarification – “Really I can’t hear it. I’m one of those that have trouble listening, and even when Eunyoung-unni talks to me in a room I feel like we’re talking inside a refridgerator. I don’t know the reason why.” – Hyeran.

[If you 'took' Yejin, she pinches]
Explanation - "She's still touching herself. Not pinching others but she has a habit of pinching herself" - Hyeran
Clarification - "I do it unconsciously I don't notice, and it's just refreshing. As time passes since my hand strength is strong so there are bruises. When the other members are tired I usually give them a massage, I guess I practice without noticing it myself." - Yejin.

[If you ‘took’ Seoah she find old snacks]
Explanation – “Strangely she loved eating rice snacks and older snacks. Because she likes them so much the members are now becoming suspicious of her age. Other than she does lots of things easily as well.” – Yejin.
Clarification – “Now I have nickname. In the past it was king-unni or big-mombut now they say it precisely ’32 year old unni’ and use that specifically.” – Seoah.

“We can be sexy without exposure. Instead of the beauty a girl can show, we can show an epicene quality of sexiness.” – All.

“Our album this time has a ‘mannish’ standard concept. With this opportunity to show this, we wanted to do it probably so we observed guy’s behaviors. When guys look in the mirror they have a habit of touching their sideburns and sweeping back their hair. We put that in the choreography. A lot of guys will probably identity with this.” – Hyeran / Seoah.

“I can’t believe it. After our debut that’s our best record. Different from last year, we get less nervous on stage, and notice the camera placements too. I think we can enjoy the stage now.” – Eunyoung.

“Last year we got the rookie award, this year we want to get 1st on a music program and at the end of the year awards to receive an award. If that happens, would Brave Brother’s producer cry? We want to make him cry.” – Eunyoung / Yejin.


To have the Brave Girls today it is because of the devotion of their company CEO Brave Brothers.


“Songwriter Brave Brothers is our company CEO also our producer. All concepts and music, choreography, lifestyle etc he watches over us all 24 hours. Always saying ‘don’t’ worry and just do your part’ ‘enjoy without regrets’. We’re in our early 20’s so maybe because we’re young we didn’t know how to express love, he recommended to ‘in a dark room light candles and calmly think about it’. He’s really a soft hearted and sensitive person.” – Seoah / Eunyoung.

Since Brave Brothers is their CEO, they don’t have to worry about songs while promoting, and since they were picked from many trainees they are thankful for everything.

While talking about their past difficult one year, Brave Girls eyes began to tear up.

“This past year was tough but I’m thankful for our members. At first we criticized each other a lot, but now we’re busy complimenting. Slowly I think we changed to have positive minds.” – Yoojin / Hyeran.

-Did you gain many fans this promotion?

“Rather than male fans originally we had lots of female fans. Female fans like less exposure concepts more, and lots of male fans are sad because of it.” – Yoojin.
“On the other hand we’re like amazons and fresh, there are people that like that.” – Eunyoung.
“There are lots of people that say we’re different” – Hyeran.

-Since you’re a girl group, shouldn’t you have more male fans?

“It’s been like since our debut. Back then we wore one piece and short miniskirts but we had more female fans.” – Yoojin.
“Maybe we had lots of epicene appearances. (laugh)” – Eunyoung.

-Between a female concept and a male concept, what is your real style?
“A female concept is more comfortable. But I do enjoy pulling off a male concept personally but I don’t think I’m doing well. I’ll put more effort into it.” – Yejin.
“
“I’m comfortable with this concept. In the past I should’ve been more cute but Yoojin and Yejin did that part. Maybe because I look a little strong I have to neutralize? Individual colors are different so I think it helps us to attempt many genres. So that’s why we’re a team.” – Eunyoung.

-Song title is ‘Nowadays You. Are you curious on how your past boyfriends are doing?

“They should be living fine.” – All.

-Before debut you all probably had boyfriends right.
“Our ages are 23, 24. Really before debut we were younger. So those boyfriends were our school friends, but rather than a boyfriend, a closer girl’s best friend? It felt like that. From now on if we meet boyfriends we’ll think of it seriously, in the past it wasn’t like that so we never thought that was special.” – Seoah / Eunyoung.

-Don’t you want to date?
“Right now Brave Girls is the most important so we have no interest in it. I think that’s what we keep telling ourselves. (laugh)” – All.

-Tell us your thoughts on your 1st year debut anniversary.
“Recently on a main music program we went on, since we were still rookies and even more rookies came to us bringing their CDs and greeted us as sunbaes. I don’t know how time passes so fast. It feels like we debuted yesterday, but time is so fast it’s surprising.” – Hyeran / Seoah.

-Is your rival still is boy group. Is it Teen Top?
“While preparing this album we focused on our team unity. While looking at Teen Top sunbaenim’s VODs we learned a lot and practiced so that’s why we mentioned Teen Top. Truthfully it was just for fun.” – Eunyoung.

-If you get 1st this promotion, plans?
“We really want 1st, so we can make Brave Brothers cry definitely. It’s our goal and our wish.” – Eunyoung.

-Seoah-ssi you tripped recently on a live stage, are you okay?
“There is no time to be hurt. I was shocked. Because I tripped I thought the precious 3 minutes on stages was wasted and felt worried, and I was sorry to the members” – Seoah.

-If you go overseas, is there a place you would like to go to?
“Since Yejin is from Canada, I want to go there.” – Eunyoung.
“We can all go and perform, and also it would be nice if we all spent the night at our house.” – Yejin.

“We’ll do our best this year to release a full album and a concert. Even in the cold weather we want to thank the fans that come see us, and to all the fans that love our music thank you. We love you all.”
