Some few people has bodies that can tolerate it, but his can't. And as a commentator he should find some other central stimulant to (ab)use, that doesn't hurt the cast.

Nick had the hardest time w/ his voice probably 2-3 years into his BW shoutcasting career when he was traveling around a TON to venues that didn't have modern casting setups. For virtually every event, you have a "line in" to your headset. That is, whenever I talk, I can hear myself in my own headphones. Unfortunately, Nick's early venues didn't have appropriate line-in setups, or had no headset at all. When that's the case, it's REALLY difficult to control the volume of your voice. Moreover, Nick grew to popularity because he was both extremely knowledgeable about SC1 and would get appropriately excited and shout during moments of action. Combine that w/ the no line-in and BOOM voice disappears after just one day. I still remember Nick calling me and telling me how stressful it is when he REALLY wants to make the cast good, but is REALLY concerned about losing his voice. It makes it a rough balance. So, Nick started to take voice acting lessons to learn to control his voice better. Over time, it's gotten MUCH much better. However, the honest truth is that when you're talking as much as Nick, your voice gets hoarse really easily. Spend one hour somewhere kinda loud and it's doom time. I remember I was taking a bus back from downtown and it was extremely hard to hear so I was talking pretty loudly. Next day when I woke up, BOOM voice gone. I play Ultimate Frisbee on the weekends and yell a bit w/ excitement. Next day, BOOM voice gone. Gotta be careful in casting. Your voice is your baby!

And he's right, I've been smoking for the same amount of time and I have no rasp in my voice (because of the fact that I'm not commentating everyday of my life). Nick had a few days off etc and he commentated the GSL WC finals and he sounded exactly like he did when he was younger. It's a lot different after spending weeks casting matches for Code S.

Really glad that Tasteless's voice isn't wrecked by smoking but by Starcraft. lol. And Day 9 plays Ultimate? Even more awesome than he was.

Yeah really, it was almost scary, like a ghost of the past was commentating the match or something. ![]() The outside arena+youngtasteless made it feel like a BW finals.
