It's more likely that he never warms up, never drink hot beverage and relax after a huge casting series. Casting is alot of strain on the vocal cord, and if you don't treat it well it can cause damage over time.

I'm a 3d teacher for a couple months a year and after the first week of lectures i sounds like solid snake. If I kept that up for any longer than I do I would have no voice at all. One year when that was combined with a cold i was hoarse for a month after.

It is not due to smoking. A friend used to smoke over a kilo of hasch & marijuana a year for over a decade. That's about 10-15 major league baseball bats a day. Several of my friends are heavy tobacco smokers. Not a single one sounds even remotely like tasteless.

He's just been talking so much it's like he's been lifting weights with his vocal cords.

Are you aware that different substances can affect different people in different ways? Not all people who smoke get lung cancer for example.

I'm glad he's seeing a vocal coach--hopefully it's some sort of speech pathologist. He's probably developing nodules.

Honestly, a vocal warmup would help. I hope that he's doing one. Water helps, tea (NOT CAFFEINATED) helps. If he's having any sort of acid reflux, that's really hurting him too.

The biggest thing he's doing though is he's talking too much for one breath group. Notice how when he's casting, he keeps talking and talking and then his voice gets softer and more hoarse? It's because he's so excited about a cast and needs to keep saying things that he talks for too long in one breath group. This can really hurt your voice.

Regardless of whether his voice is negatively effected by smoking or not, I think we can all agree that him stopping smoking would be an overall good thing.

too much casting, 1 year of heavy GSL casting and other events has taken it's toll, he needs to cut down it doesn't sound good at all.

I've heard something about him having a surgery?

There was some GSL episode ago when he did that "You lost your passion" joke and said ironicly that he was sorry that his voice isnt what it used to be and that he made a surgery.

That surgery part might be true tho... hmmm. Anyhow the newer voice makes him sound funnier I enjoy it.

His voice is probably still like (to an extent) that but he never gets the chance for his voice to rest and recover from so much commentating for the past few years.
