As most ex-smokers, I've become totally allergic to smoking and everything related to it. The new, raspy voice reeks of unhealthiness, and was the main reason for me to stop watching GSL after season 2.

Some few people has bodies that can tolerate it, but his can't. And as a commentator he should find some other central stimulant to (ab)use, that doesn't hurt the cast.

Tasteless himself said he hardly smokes, and that people who say his voice changed because of smoking are crazy, he mentioned it during one of the GSL casts.

I thought his voice sounded great today, pretty clear that the 5 days off helped him out quite a bit.
good vibes only

His voice was noticeably smoother in todays cast of the GSL WC finals. I'm not sure if it was just being able to take a break or what, but it was a pleasant change. Made his+Artosis's already great casting just that bit better.

Wow just watched the GSL final and Tasteless' voice sounds completely different 0.0
This was from just 5 days off? I think he needs to take breaks more often.

Yeah tasteless himself stated along with artosis recently in the gsl that his voice difference is due to lots of casting.

Well that nails it. Shouting into the microphone day after day fucks up your voice, which is the case for Tasteless.

I don't think it's smoking. Just listening to early GSL casts

like this one

his voice has changed a lot. I think it's just the commentating.

His voice changes have nothing to do w/ smoking or any assorted craziness. It's just what happens when you talk a TON. You have to be super absurdly responsible about taking forced rests of silence and drinking stupid amounts of water all the time. I seriously have to guzzle like 3 gallons of water every day to make sure my voice doesn't fry out. When my voice does fry out, I sound exactly like Nick :D.

Nick had the hardest time w/ his voice probably 2-3 years into his BW shoutcasting career when he was traveling around a TON to venues that didn't have modern casting setups. For virtually every event, you have a "line in" to your headset. That is, whenever I talk, I can hear myself in my own headphones. Unfortunately, Nick's early venues didn't have appropriate line-in setups, or had no headset at all. When that's the case, it's REALLY difficult to control the volume of your voice. Moreover, Nick grew to popularity because he was both extremely knowledgeable about SC1 and would get appropriately excited and shout during moments of action. Combine that w/ the no line-in and BOOM voice disappears after just one day.

I still remember Nick calling me and telling me how stressful it is when he REALLY wants to make the cast good, but is REALLY concerned about losing his voice. It makes it a rough balance. So, Nick started to take voice acting lessons to learn to control his voice better. Over time, it's gotten MUCH much better.

However, the honest truth is that when you're talking as much as Nick, your voice gets hoarse really easily. Spend one hour somewhere kinda loud and it's doom time. I remember I was taking a bus back from downtown and it was extremely hard to hear so I was talking pretty loudly. Next day when I woke up, BOOM voice gone. I play Ultimate Frisbee on the weekends and yell a bit w/ excitement. Next day, BOOM voice gone. Gotta be careful in casting. Your voice is your baby!
Whenever I encounter some little hitch, or some of my orbs get out of orbit, nothing pleases me so much as to make the crooked straight and crush down uneven places. www.day9.tv

The thoughthammer has spoken!!!

And he's right, I've been smoking for the same amount of time and I have no rasp in my voice (because of the fact that I'm not commentating everyday of my life).

Nick had a few days off etc and he commentated the GSL WC finals and he sounded exactly like he did when he was younger. It's a lot different after spending weeks casting matches for Code S.

Well I guess thats that. Really glad that Tasteless's voice isn't wrecked by smoking but by Starcraft. lol.

And Day 9 plays Ultimate? Even more awesome than he was.

I'm only just now watching the vod's of the WC finals, came into this thread to say exactly that, Nick's voice was much closer to his younger voice.

Yeah really, it was almost scary, like a ghost of the past was commentating the match or something. I was pleased.

The outside arena+youngtasteless made it feel like a BW finals.

He's also done voice acting in korea.

That's what happens when you have to cast ALL weekend and talk to fans nonstop. Give him a break, it will get better just needs a few days.

Also see day9s post above and nice necro T_T
