Basically in Germany we always had great goalies, everyone praised our goalies. This also means that kids feel like being a goalie is cool, they have idols to look up to. Now look at England. The goalie is always the asshole. Not sure how you convince any talented kid to put himself between the posts. And even if you do... there are no real idols, most of English goalies are more known for their comedy acts than for their goalkeeping. Peter Shilton was rly good and David Seaman was a solid goalkeeper. After Seaman, there was a black hole when it comes to goalkeepers, but then Hart ended that period. I would say that England's biggest problem is lack of good manager/lack of individual tactical education. Football thats being played in PL is attractive and enjoyable to watch, but it lacks tactical depth to compete with the rest of the Europe. Alex Ferguson is a big exception here, and if England was smart, they should have based their national team on 90s ManU and the work of Sir Alex. Every other CL success from 90s to present day came from foreign manager/foreign players. I think you are absolute right with your point about the English team but I also think it go's further. IMO the biggest achievement from Löw (and before him Klinsmann) and main reason for the German successes in the last 10 years was not to just take the best players but to find the best teams - they had a plan how they wanted to play and looked for the players who would best fit in their respective roles. Löw wasn't scared to leave better players at home when they didn't fit the team (play wise or because of their personality), even when he got and still get's today sometimes a lot of criticism from fans and media Iceland won for the same reason Probably every English player is individually better as his counterpart but Iceland had the better team. They had a clear vision how to play the game and every player fit in his role. I don't get why now single English players are being picked out to be especially bad, I don't think they lost because player x had a bad day, they lost because they didn't play together as a team.

Germany might not be top notch in all of those games, but the respective national teams would wipe the floor with England in every single one of them. I think Great Britain did never qualify for the Olympics in either Basketball, Handball or Volleyball. It's hard to find another major nation in Europe that is so bad at those sports. Obviously one does not have to start a career in those games to become a goalkeeper in football. But England's low status in these games might indicate that ball handling has no importance in their sports culture whatsoever, meaning kids might have a hard time picking up the necessary motor skills at a very young age.

in seriousness I do assume that more than 0.2% of the population were doing something else, but I also think it is likely that this is one of the sporting events watched by the biggest percentage of any single country's population that we've ever had. (in a smaller country, more people are going to be enthused by this type of success, and no smaller country has ever played for a bigger stage, so this really makes perfect sense).

+ Show Spoiler + ![]() However that will have to wait until the weekend as i had to go to work, somehow i managed to get out of bed to go but i spoke to no one and just was straight up depressed. Our glorious team, of superstars from arguably the best league in the world produced the worst performance of all 24 teams, in a game which was extremely winnable, after getting the 1-0 lead. Every one of those players needs to be put on a spike outside buckingham palace and Roy Hodgson needs to be sent to Mars to get some use out of him. Oh well at least i have beer hookers and narcotics to keep me sane before Don Conte comes to shout at all the prima donnas that ruined my domestic season last year T_T
