If you try to analyze objectively, in my opinion Germany has a disadvantage against France. Khedira and most likely also Gomez are injured and won't be able to participate in semifinals. His substituion Schweinsteiger has had like zero practice this year - he won't be able to compete with Pogba, Matuidi and Kante! So most likely France will be dominating midfield / ball possession and gain the upper hand by this. Also they got the better strikers with Griezmann, Giroud and Payet. Gomez is out and so far, Götze did not show that he can play as a false 9. Maybe this time Müller should be central forward for Germany. Only disadvantage for France are their central defenders and even this is debateable, Koscielny and Rami are not bad at all. But this gets evened out thanks to the fact that Hummels is suspended for semi finals. So most people will say that Germany is the favorite, but when you have a closer look it is the other way around by a huge margin.

You're over-estimating France.

France hasn't looked particularly great for the tournament. They've had a lot of flashes of brilliance, but there have also been extensive periods of time where they haven't looked good. As for Germany, Khedira has been awful this entire tournament and Germany's midfield has only gotten better when Schweinsteiger has been subbed in, so losing Khedira isn't that bad. Germany easily has the best midfield in the world, so the idea that France's midfield will dominate is utterly ridiculous. We don't even know if Gomez is actually injured enough to miss the semis, and France's back 4 is just as questionable as Germany's. Hummels is a big loss, but Mustafi and Höwedes are both quality CB's that can fill in as well. Furthermore, if France is able to control the game more as you suggest, it only plays into Germany's hands; playing with Götze up front becomes a better proposition when Germany has the ball less. It opens up space and allows for faster play. Götze is terrible when Germany has 65% possession and the team has to try to slowly break down a defense, not when they are playing a fast-moving, open-style play.

Now, this all assumes that France beats Iceland, and that is absolutely no guarantee; like I said, there have been a lot of questions around France for the tournament, and Iceland has looked incredibly good, even if people constantly underestimate them. We'll have to wait for the game today to find out.

How can you say that there have been a lot of questions over France? They won all their games comfortably. Even when Evra and Pogba decided to go stupid and gift the opposition a penalty.

Maybe my memory is hazy, but I thought they had at least two games where they scored close to last minute. They won though, that's right.

At this point I want France / Iceland to win the Euro.
Would be a tragedy to see Portugal winning in the finals after so many disappointing games, meh.

Iceland for the new Greece of Euro.

deschamps refuses to acknowledge that france is a team of counter attack, nothing more nothing less and he should build the team around that

Oh sure... Against who should France play for counter attack?
Romania, Switzerland, Albania, Ireland, now Iceland...
France goes for counter, and the other team parks the bus. That will be exciting.
At least send some guy for the kickoff, otherwise the ball will remain there unmoved for the next 45 minutes because nobody leaves his half...

Do you know what happens when a big team plays counter attacking football?
Italy vs Sweden. No one does anything.

Kicker says Khedira won't be able to play in the semifinal. Also Schweinsteiger not 100% fit either.
http://www.kicker.de/news/fussball/nationalelf/655186/artikel_khedira-faellt-im-em-halbfinale-aus.html

Seems very likely that Can or Weigl will start. I'd favor Can, he's more similiar in playstyle. Weigl seems to be more of a potential replacement for Kroos. But of course that depends a lot on what strategy Löw chooses and if Schweinsteiger will have recovered completely by thursday

Quarter Finals!

France vs Iceland, the game that sends shivers down my spine for many a reason, but most notably that this has some how become a quarter final game, the minnows of Iceland, a population of 323,000 people which statistically speaking gives me a 28% chance of being in the Iceland football team if i was Icelandic, are taking on the mighty French in their backyard for a place in the Semi Finals. France will come in as huge favorites and rightfully so, they are playing pretty well, taking chances and Greizman has found some form after stuttering in matchday 1. Iceland, well the fairytale continues, after getting out of the group stage in a respectable second place, they found themselves against England and well.....they now head up against France the tournament hosts in the ultimate david vs goliath showdown! France will be looking to learn from mistakes of previous teams and make sure they are prepared for the long throw shenanigans Iceland bring to the table, they have been a little suspect in defence though the French with Evra and Sagna really showing their ages and Rami not being the quickest of centre backs either. Iceland will be looking to counter fast and using set pieces to help muster a challenge to the French on Sunday but could muster something up and keep the French honest, however i only see one winner here and this could and should be the ending of the Dream.

There are several teams doing bad throwins all the time right now. Not sure why they are bringing up new rules... and then no ref ever cares about them...

But havent looked at the Icelandic ones in detail... I actually thought they were clean.

You have to use both hands with the same power but Iceland fullback did not do so. They used their right hand more than the left one but this can be seen only in slow motion.

lol. If we'd go to the nitty gritty, i bet more than just the Iceland players throw against the rules then.
