by Plexa The TSL has always been a place where new talent can shine. Players like Brat_OK, Morrow, Adelscott and Thorzain all made their name in the TSL and put themselves on the radars of many Starcraft fans. What we never expected in TSL4 is that new talent from within Korea would emerge and make it this deep into the tournament. Sting is exactly that; a fresh talent from within Korea doing well in the TSL. Normally when you think of Koreans who have never done well in the GSL words like 'faceless', 'boring' and 'bad' invade your thoughts. But Sting is different. He may have no GSL results, but his personality comes radiating through his interviews and his stream (which he religiously uses). Sting is true to his words, he is a very aggressive player. But he's not mindlessly aggressive (ie. not a modern day BitByBit), he's very calculated in his aggressive strategies. For instance, look at his series vs First from the Ro8 of the TSL. He analyzed First's playstyle and together with his 'skype family' devised a bunch of clever builds and strategies to take advantage of that. He even through in the incredibly outdated 1-1-1 build, but it worked. His careful planning and preparation allowed him to defeat what many would consider to be a better player. When I can see that a player has prepared explicitly for a series and has well tailored builds ready to 'do the job' then that player wins a fan in me. Sting recently left NewStar Hoseo and is currently a teamless player. So how does a teamless player prepare for a tournament like the TSL? Sting has what he likes to call his 'skype family' consisting of a bunch of his high level friends. He regularly calls upon them for practice, and praises them in his interviews for all the support, help and advice that they give him. While he has his support network, at the end of the day Sting is still a teamless player in Korea. That means there are very few opportunities for him to show off his skill. As a player who admits he gets nervous within the GSL booth, there really are not many options for him. The TSL4 is Sting's most prominent tournament experience thus far. The rest of the world has now been exposed to his unique style. He is gradually winning over fans, but as a Korean and as a Terran and with only the TSL to get his name out there, it's slow progress. I encourage you to go read his previous interviews (linked below) and see what an interesting player Sting is. And if you happen to be a team manager reading this - here is a talented free agent with personality that would be a great asset to your team! Qualification Interview Ro16 Interview Ro8 Interview Sting: we may have thought of you as a lesser player in this TSL before, but we were wrong. You have fully justified your qualification in this tournament and have won over many fans. Win or lose, we'll support you to the end. |
