Team Liquid is excited to announce that the TSL3 will be streamed in Korea in partnership with GomTV. Starting this weekend, all TSL games will be broadcast to Korean viewers using the same replay-broadcast system as TL. Popular Korean commentator "Gisado" will cast these matches from Seoul and the Korean broadcast will be synced with the main TSL stream to assure that Korean viewers get the same TSL experience as our international audience.
We hope that this move will strengthen the connection between Koreans and foreigners when it comes to Starcraft and Starcraft 2. While the Korean stream will be only be broadcast to Korean IPs, and all other users will need to join us on the official TSL stream here at Team Liquid, we hope that getting together to watch the same tournament will help our two communities come closer together as we follow this game together in the months to come.
This will be the first time that a Korean E-Sports channel broadcasts a foreign Starcraft 2 tournament, and TL applauds GomTV for being so forward thinking in their approach to the game. We value their support and look forward to working closely with them in the months to come.
GomTV continued to act upon their interest in the non-Korean Starcraft II scene, announcing that they would provide live streaming and VOD services for Korean viewers of TSL3. This was the second major development to emerge this week regarding GomTV and the foreign Starcraft II scene, following previous news that GomTV would invite the winner of the Swedish Rakaka Logitech Tournament to compete in Korea. Earlier in the week, GomTV had released a statement regarding their future e-Sports plans following the present GSL season, which included unspecific remarks regarding their strong desire to cooperate with international tournaments.
GomTV provided a basic overview of the TSL3 tournament in their announcement, but did not provide specific details such as a possible Korean announcing team for their videos. Although the announcement came only days before the start of TSL3, Korean Starcraft II fans were already somewhat aware of the tournament through the reporting of the news site PlayXP.com

Not good at all imo, there probably would have been Afreeca restreams anyway since Koreans want to watch their top players. Why does GOM even need to provide VODs? Does youtube lag in Korea or something?
-stream is unreliable -they shut down restreams to promote use of the GOM player -VODs, especially HQ ones, have had terrible audio problems to the point of being unwatchable

Not good at all? How can this be anything but good? Koreans gets to watch it easily, and probably in korean? Not all koreans speak english as you have may noticed.
I think you misunderstand. GomTV isn't taking over the broadcasting, they are only making it available for koreans.
Awesome. I was just thinking that the way to integrate the Korean and Foreign SC2 scene was for them to have access to foreign tournament coverage. I really hope this means they will be casting them in Korean rather than simply re-streaming them. The next step is to have live Korean casters at the major foreign tournaments like IEM and MLG. I think that would be fantastic.
-stream is unreliable -they shut down restreams to promote use of the GOM player -VODs, especially HQ ones, have had terrible audio problems to the point of being unwatchable
I've had a season ticket since season 1 and they've been improving greatly throughout the seasons. I've never had issues with the HQ live stream except a 2 minute blackout during theJinro vs MC game where he went mech on LT . As for the VOD's i havent really noticed any audioissues at all. Restreaming a television show is pretty much illegal in every country, to take part of free korean TV content and all you have to do to watch it for free is to use their media player, u mad bro? spoiled?

Wow non of this makes any sense to me. Basically what the person above said about them not taking over, rather than they are streaming it is basically right. I for one am VERY happy this is happening. It means more koreans will learn that there is a good non-korean scene out there and may promote more global sc2 rather than "segregated" sc2 where only the pros that go to korea matter.
also -Stream isn't THAT unreliable -They don't shutdown re-streams cuz they cant. You can easily find a re-stream of gsl when its happening. Its illegal to begin with, so stop complaining. Life isnt free. - And ive been buying the premium tickets since season 3 and have NEVER had a hq vod crap out on me. Let alone be unwatchable. My gf's old comp would crap out with HQ because it was bad, perhaps that's the problem? Either way, my personal experience with the vod service has been amazing. No sound issues, and in HQ. Million times higher hq than the stream to boot.

They might shut down restreams for a good reason in that it is their property that they are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars every month to provide and want to be able to have accurate numbers to be able to sell advertising to pay for it. Even as someone on a mac who has issues with Gom the reason they do what they do is totally understandable.

No, every time a HQ VOD had audio problems I would check the comments to make sure everyone else was having the same problems as well.

TL's gonna shut down your restream if you mess with TSL.
I don't know how much difference it's actually going to do, they might be watching it at some random stream for all I know (like how some watch restreams on Ustream or whatever), but the effort is there. Too cool Gom, too cool.
Is this tied to the english TSL broadcasts (same time etc) or will it be completely seperate?
Also it could be fun if someone that can read Korean could give a brief summary of the comments below the announcement. It's always fun to see what other communities thinks of this.

since the broadcasts are replays I thin they will be casted at a more appropriate time in Korea.

Their saying it will be synced with the english stream so I guess they will be broadcasted at the same time.
Hope the foreigners will show some good games to keep them interested. In Broodwar, the koreans didn't care not because they were "isolationist" or something like that, but because we were really bad (low pro-am level bad for the best players around).
Oh yaeh, i forgot to add, i hope somebody will record the korean stream, i would like to know what's going to be the "playguuuuuuuuu" or "reavo, reavo, reavo, reavo" of SC2.

Yeah I guess that would make the most sense. Or not as in the later post I missed.
This is pretty effing cool. I think it's at a weird time like 3am but that's fine in gamer time anyway + VOD's. I'm pretty sure they'll tune in for most Korean vs foreigner games. Does TL get the viewership numbers from GOM afterwards? I'm kind of curious how many people will watch the TSL worldwide this time around.
thats awesome for korea, but personally i'd prob not use their stream since its so buggy.
Well I got the impression that the stream is for koreans only so I don't think you can. And the stream for koreans is much better so..
Anyways I think this is great. Gom is da best!
While foreign users have seem to have had probablems with Gom Player and watching streams, I have had almost 0 problems watching it from Korea. Streaming through Gom would probably be the best way to reach the Korean audience (which is the target audience in this case).
I love that they are doing this. I will make sure to watch via Gom!!
Don't forget to buy tickets to support Gom guys. With the clear evidences recently that Gom is also trying to support international scene, we should support them even more.
awesome move by Gom, maybe the Koreans can see entertaining games for the first time ever. Sure Korea has the best players but the games from the EU/NA scene are for more entertaining.
It's a true delight to read this. Feels like the beginning of something beautiful.Having seen other communities get torn to shreds and degrade from either region or game segregation, this feels like move in opposite direction. To a strong future!
great, because koreans (and chinese) lack of english skill, this is always a nice thing to stream this in korean, perhaps it would be also cool in chinese because of loner
Really great news, give more exposure to the foreign scene to Korea. I hope there will be a lot of interest for it. NASL, MLG and other league organizers, take note! Not only for your own league to get something similar if possible, but also use this to promote your own league (if at all allowed of course).
Wow! Did not see this coming I really like it. Makes the event that much bigger

I've watched most games through vods never had a single issue. Always uploaded fast, always reliable. You should appreciate it more that major players like teamliquid and GOM works together it's great.
This should help foreigners to get known outside of Korea, and I'm pretty sure that some upsets will happen in this tournaments, and, in my opinion, Korean viewers will get to see that foreigners are still at a level that can compete with the best Koreans in the world!
And BTW, grats TL for their tournament being the first to be broadcasted in Korea, and thanks for being such an awesome bridge between Korea and the foreign scene.
Providing Korean commentary for an International tournament is amazing. Really great step forward, and a great opportunity for top NA/EU players to make their impression on the Korean fans.

I've been supporting GOM since season 1, and while the stream was unreliable to my region in the earlier seasons they have vastly improved since then, and there is very little error (hoping for no error is just being idiotic). Them shutting down restreams is entirely upto their discretion and they do it because they need the numbers on their stream so that they are able to show the sponsors that they are getting adequate viewership and even get more sponsors.
From watching VOD's I've only ever come across ONE that ever had audio issues, and it was corrected within 24 hours.
Nice to see GOM working together with the foreign scene to provide content for koreans who are interested in watching the tournament. Definitely a step in the right direction and this just made the tournament even more exciting!
Let's hope that TSL doesn't disappoint the Korean side then, which is much more spoiled with perfect builds and execution. This has huge potential to finally break down that everlasting wall between the levels of competetiveness we have in SK and "world" respectively.
What do you say now, Strelok? May the trade-off have been worth it afterall? : ]
Call me a nerd all you want... I literally got chills reading this. Can't say how thrilled I am that the korean scene and international scene are getting along like this.

100% agree. I love how Korean E-sports is working with the rest of the world now, something like this would probably be nearly impossible a few years ago.
I love this news... this is bringing us one step closer to having one conjoined worldwide starcraft scene rather than the inevitable "us and them" attitude that still seems to exist.
Can you imagine the possibilities of this expanding in the future? I can see a Korean announcers table being setup for events like MLG and IEM in the future, with Koreans, Americans and Europeans all competing!
On March 18 2011 23:46 FreezerJumps wrote: I can only assume that koreans will have to pay $10 for the stream and VODs. Surely broadcasting outside of the norm costs extra money. Right?
Doubtful. In Korea, GOM already has the infrastructure and advertiser support that they are trying to build elsewhere.
My brain had an orgasm. Thank you TL for being so proactive and thank you to GOM for doing all of this I will keep buying premium tickets and clicking on allll the links ^_^.

Yeah, this is truly awesome. Hopefully some foreigners surprise with good results too so the foreigner scene earns more respect from the Koreans too.
Now some of the koreans will know what it fells like to stay up till 3 in the morning to whach there favorite players and it be over in 15 minutes like huk vs losira im still mad about that
Can't feel anything else but just cheer love for TL and GOM at the moment. What you guys do to connect the eSport loving parts of the world as a whole is just amazing. Thanks <3<3
Wow very good news GOMTV FTW. There will alway be some people hating for the sake of hating, but I'm glad that Koreans will be able to watch this awesome tournament, moreover casted by non other than the one & only GISADO !

exactly my thoughts, people hating on GOMTV for their free content makes me rofl, and even if streams do fail we have the vods which pretty much never fail -_- GOMTV <3333

Me too!
I sincerely hope that Koreans will get "geek chills" watching some of the foreign players just like we got the chills watching MC / MVP/ MKP /NESTEA
It's a pity Kiwikaki isn't in here cause he is usually the best people to incite this kind of reaction but i predict some Koreans jaw will drop when they see the PANZER GENERAL in all its glory =p
This is really wonderful, but who is "Gisado" is he the caster for Code A, or the stataticien or the commentator? I'm not that familiar with our Korean aquivalents. It would be nice if Tasteless and Artosis presented them once. I think at the GSL 2 finals there was the 1 hours pregame show with the girl caster for code S, but I don't know her name.
Anyhow, TSL being awesome like no other tournament and mad props to GOMTV and John, since it's clearly something as great as this is John' work.
This is so much awesomeness in one news blogpost. This is great for the future of both Starcraft 2 and esports.
I would like to make the comparison to the Soccer tournament Champions league in Europe. It is one of the premiere leagues/tournaments in the world where the best of the best European clubs compete just like GSL (minus the blended player base).
This tournament is however trumped by the World Cup which is one of the largest sports events in the world. Not that TSL3 is going to be that huge, but with more interest in the international scene, we are going towards that kind of status for future TSL/World event tournament.
Gom TV is an obviously for-profit organization, while Team Liquid is an essentially free and open community. As the TSL is hosted by TL, VOD's, replays, commentaries, streams, etc. would all be available, while GOM prohibits/inhibits all of these. In particular, their VOD format only allows viewers to see the first match for free, having to purchase a ticket toi view the rest of the matches.
Here's my question: How are these two different mindsets going to mesh over the content TSL will provide?
Wow! I rarely post but this is definitely post worthy! Pat on the back for both GOMTV and Team Liquid for making this happen. Collaboration between different scenes is a really important way the whole starcraft community can grow as a whole. This being a truly worldwide tournament having localised restreaming partners is amazing. How about collaborating with the biggest Chinese casters who would restream anyway?
Back when it the Day 1 Hype poster was posted on PlayXp, a lot of Koreans were saying things like "3 am, not going to watch". Still a lot more Koreans are going to watch it now, but remember it is at 3 am, they get to feel how we do with the GSL :p
Hm, I wonder how this will be taken since it is on the same day as the Code S Grand Finals. Korean audience members who are going from Seoul to the event will have to miss Day 1 of the TSL to grab good seats for the live event. rOf course, I was planning on watching the TSL anywho.
Two solid events (hopefully!) back-to-back. Everyone, fighting!

They have a partnership with a TV station now.
Ye but thats a partnership so they can show GSL, obviously they have times in which they can show GSL, I'm doubtful they would show up at the TV station to ask for time to show this foreigner tourney on TV :/

You are aware that they are just re-streaming and promoting TSL3 in Korea. So that Koreans can watch this tournament with a high qualitity stream + a Korean caster casting it. Instead of watching the English TL cast at the same time.
That's all.
If they want to set up vods of it on there web page and charge money for there Korean commentator, doing work, commentating the game, they could I would imagine, but people could just go to TL and get the english VODS for free (if TSL VODS are avaible).
I see it no different then Youtube casters making an add in front of every replay he casts of a weekly tournament.
But an official TL member, or Gom member, would be more informed then me on the whole possibly making money aspect.

Unless it has changed recently. GomTV does not have limits on VODs for korean viewers (which is who this TSL Relay will be for).
wow! awesome news from GomTV. This is why I and many foreigner fans should continue to support GomTV just because they are supporting the foreigner scene this much!

You do know this has absolutely nothing to do with premium stream right? this is a completely isolated tournament and i do not think your complaints belong in this thread. Thank you
Awesome, Koreans will be able to cheer for their players against foreigners, just as we can cheer for our guys. I'm glad they get to experience a bit of foreign tournament awesomeness in their own language, will definitely spark more interest for them in our tournaments.
This is pretty nice for the Koreans but I don't understand at all why they are banning it for everyone not using a Korean IP. There is no good reason for this whatsoever.
It would have been quite interesting for the non Koreans to take a look at the Korean stream a few times and try to see how excited their commentators actually are about the foreign players but with this totally unnecessary move it is not possible now, so I don't really see a reason for me to be excited about this news any longer.
Great move by them! I really love seeing things about how Koreans view the foreign scene and can't wait for their reactions to some of the games (I expect the foreigners to do quite well).
All this exposure can surely only help SC2 teams outside of Korea get more exposure, and hopefully get them more sponsorship = more kick arse foreign scene ^^
Koreans going to be able to watch TSL eh? Even more incentive to kick their ass , got to regain our honour after the last IEM and show them we have gosu players too
This is the best news ive heard for a while, admittedly koreans own foreigners at this game and the way korean fans pick players they like is very different to how foreigners pick but it would be nice for great foreign players to gain a korean fan base!!
Oh wow. Putting aside technical difficulties for some (almost always works fine for me), for the bigger picture this is pretty awesome, as most of GOM's initiatives have been. Much better for the scene if the major tournaments don't vie for exclusivity and such. Nice work TL and thanks a lot GOM, you rock pretty hard too.

Don't assume there is no good reason for this. You decided to post your thoughts without even thinking about it for 30s. I'll help you out but in the future please think before you post.
The Korean stream will be ran independent from ours. Although we will time it together this means that their stream could be ahead of ours if we mess up. The implications of that are rather large. Spoilers for our viewers, losing viewers due to being behind. We are incredibly happy that we're able to cater to the Koreans through this, but we make our income from our English stream and need you guys to watch it here

This is awesome, but wouldn't the games be streamed at an awful time in Korea? IMO, it'd be better if they just streamed from replays a bit later in Korean.

Although the time is very bad for Koreans it's not much different from what Americans go through for the GSL. When discussing this subject all they had to say was "It's what you guys so for us, right? Maybe it's our turn."

I don't pretend to know the agreement between TL and GOM, of course, but this is stupid. Tastosis work for GOM, and the English GSL stream is provided by GOM. GOM do not work for TL, and the Korean TSL stream is not provided by TL. There's no reason to expect the arrangements to be similar.
Edit: At any rate, this is cool, and of course it doesn't matter to us what deal TL and GOM have made.

Koreans are pretty cool people. No whining.
None the less I hope there's some VoDs for the Koreans to view for I'd love nothing more then to have them to have good exposure to the international scene. With the way Korea was in SC1 being superior to foreigners most might think the same with SC2 and may not bother viewing the TSL except for their Korean superstars, let alone many of our international players are most likely unknown to everyone in Korea.

I mean... the TSL is being broadcast by a company to Korea... thats frickin epic. This is massive. Blargh. TL continues to be ridiculous day after day. First class reporting, great forums, great events, and first class events.
I've been buying season tickets and haven't been disappointed, good to see the company taking steps to ensure the development of the game overall, not just in korea.

I wouldn't explain it better. Great move for all SC2 fans.
I am kind of curious as to the Korean audiences reaction to a foreign held and organized tournament being brought to them by such a mainstream outlet for the Starcraft2 content like GOMtv. Criticisms, Likes, Dislikes? Comment Translations would be greatly appreciated.

Agreed I'd love to know the Korean's thought of the matches today

i watched the first two. in the 2nd game, the observer completely missed a drop responsible for tyler's sloppy control and also missed the 20+ kill zealot -_- im pretty sure that they ended that cast without ever knowing what truly happened
Best news I've heard in a while. So great to see TL and GOM working together! Even with the NASL coming out and MLG stepping up their sc2 coverage, it would make me so happy if the TSL remained the biggest and best foreign sc tourney out there.
34.5k views on the video linked above. not sure if that's total views or just for the first vod but that's a decent turnout for the first day, and an 8.5 star rating means they're enjoying the tournament, lets hope there's more viewers tomorrow now that word is probably spreading about TSL3 and gomTV broadcast!

VOD for Day 1 TSL had about 80,000 views last I checked.
Perfect from Korea, as expected (it's a Korean service )
Also, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but apparently with the Gom iPhone app update, they allow VOD viewing over 3G. I've been watching the games on my way to work
I'm all for spreading eSports, but it's kind of annoying that they don't broadcast some of the Korean events for foreigners, yet the reverse doesn't seem to apply. No one remembers the events that Gom had that they only would broadcast for Koreans and didn't allow restreams of for foreigners, even if they didn't charge for the stream? I find it hilarious that people are commending GomTV for this.

Gom's Korean streams and VODS are full of ads... which is why they don't charge for either. As far as I know the VODS for foreigners are do not have ads (currently anyway.. although I think there will eventually be an option).
What Korean events are you referring to? I thought they were pretty good abouting broadcasting everything to foreigners as well.. except maybe Gisado casts.. (which have pretty much discontinued anyway).
Isn't online poker stuff illegal in South Korea? o.0
I'll counter with an "Aren't gambling laws poorly enforced everywhere in the world?"
I think the point is that TSL3 is sponsored by an online poker site which has a dead market in SK and gains absolutely nothing in this whole deal.
maybe the sponsor doesn't get anything from it, but i think it's beneficial for both TL and Gomtv. most of all though, it creates more interaction between korean and foreigner e-sports communities. I mean, i don't recall seeing so much translating and curiosity about what the koreans were thinking (and vice-versa, i read). Good for E-sports to make it more accessible to the bigger E-sports market. Not sure exactly what gom gets out of it, but i'm pretty sure it does help them in some way.
great stuff regardless of the reasons (why should we care about that part in the first place?)
Before the first game started between Adelscott and MVP they were talking something about TT1 and laughed about it. Would be nice if someone could give rough translation :D
