This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |
On August 31 2011 14:43 Vei wrote:Yes, I really feel this is ridiculous and some sort of action needs to be taken. The amount of bans delivered is just incredibly inconsistent. TL's unusually high standards for posting and unusually low thresholds for banning are fine and all, when they follow a consistent policy of "don't be a dick," but this is far from objective. The injuries were IN THE ABDOMEN and not life-threatening; it's hard to argue that the shooter was certainly shooting to kill, as KwarK explained in all of his ban notes for everyone he banned. I have been banned a few times for being a douchebag and have always accepted I was in the wrong, but over here I feel like this is just unjust, and it only takes like 3 bans on TL before you're banned for a month so I really feel like this is unfair on a ton of people, as well as stifling what seems to be the most common reaction/opinion to what happened.
You know, abdomen injuries can easily be fatal. Puncture the spleen or pancrease and the you will die. Probably pretty quickly and painfully. There's a lot of blood flow in the abdomen, so bleeding to death isn't out of the question either. Even if you get to a hospital, you can still die; Sean Taylor was shot in the thigh and died of blood loss a day after undergoing emergency surgery to stop the bleeding.
Also, hunters know that a gut shot is a messy way to kill something, which I imagine is the majority demographic of crossbow owners.
I didn't read the entire thread, but what I did see boiled into - those that were arguing about what was and was not in good taste, and most of those people arguing that it was ok to shoot someone for throwing a rock or that the fact it was a crossbow made it funny should have quit while they were ahead - those that were just trying to top each other in making dumb jokes about a potentially *lifethreatening* injury or trying to one-up each other in some internet tough-guy competition
Actually, the latter point is something I've noticed cropping up a lot lately. The Japan Couple thread for instance, several people immediately posted that they wouldn't have died if it happened to them or they survived worse, ect. Well guess what, no one cares, and the couple actually did die so what's the point other than making it a 'look at how cool I am' competition.
I'm glad Kwark tried to clean it up, hopefully this is the warning shot so that next time they can go ahead and purge everyone without complaint.

This is wrong lol. From what I've read in this thread most people agree with the bans.
Secondly, even if most people liked these "jokes," just because the majority wants something that doesn't mean it's a good thing. If TL had mob rule it'd look exactly like every other place with mob rule i.e. 4chan. If masses of people are out of line in a thread (which in my opinion (and that of many others) they were), then mass bans should happen.

reversing ban is being too nice. what the hell TL

I was very happy when I saw mass bannings had happened. I personally feel like the quality of the general forum has degraded significantly over the past year. At one point, I definitely respected many of the opinions shared by the users there, and I wouldn't have to dig very far to find an intelligent post which would make me think. Now, however? Let's just say I'm not much more inspired than I am about youtube comments.
Although some old threads by forum veterans definitely have low-quality content in them as well, as Plexa pointed out, the community was different at the time. If Rekrul makes a shitty one-liner, well, that's just Rekrul - I have a face and personality to associate with him. When Mr. SCV makes the same one-liner ten years down the road, then his 100 friends follow suit... there's not really a comparison. The community has grown substantially, and the overall quality of the site should be growing with it, not diminishing.
I welcome the Purge of 2011 openly.

I didn't go through the whole thread but my impression from the few pages i read:
1) most of the people didn't laugh at the kid being shot, but at the fact that the driver -in 21st century- used crossbow. Plus the kid wasn't life-threateningly hurt and yes, that's important. Imagine you are on a golf course and you shoot your friend. If he's ok, you all will have good laugh about it and story to tell. If you seriously injure him, then not so much. Same goes for the kid's case. Him being totally unharmed or dead is irelevant for discussion about whether it's fine to shoot kids with crossbow or not, but that was never point of the thread.
2) if you think 2, 4 or 6 years ago the reactions would have been different, you're wrong. Majority, including mods, would be laughing at it and posting funny puns, some would say kid deserved it + Show Spoiler +, some would say it's wrong to shoot kids and that it's moraly wrong to laugh at it. All of it with much less of political corectness we see in threads nowadays.

It wasn't "everyone" -- the ages were brought up in the thread. Yes, there were some people who thought it was a little kid and made light-hearted comments, but they were light-hearted and anyone who read the article linked (which was only a couple of lines in length) knew the victim didn't have live-threatening injuries. The ones who went over-the-top certainly deserved to be banned, but that wasn't what happened. There was absolutely a case of misinformed people versus informed people regarding that thread.
i think that that if this is your real position then shouldn't you leave the discretion of what is over-the-top to the staff. and especially understand when you can see that it is one moderator doing 95% of the bans - as the thread is still being very actively posted in - that he is way more likely than not acting on his own initiative and may or may not be supported wholly or partially by the rest of the staff.
kwark got word bad shit was happening, went in, bad shit was happening, he took a shovel and started cleaning. when you've got a big pile of shit on your kitchen table, sometimes you go a little overboard cleaning it up because damn you just came in and there's all this shit on the table and you're in the moment.
part of the problem whenever there is a controversy like this is internet time vs real world time; the internet is blowing up while resolution may not be possible for minutes or hours because the people needed to resolve it are living their lives or because, you know, cleaning a pile of shit up takes a minute.
im sure if kwark hadnt been so disgusted by the kind of crap that was being posted in there he would have shown more discretion in the bans he was handing out, but come on, once you're in the zone in a thread that seriously needs some righteous justice, you're not going to stop until you're done.

It looks like they're just taking a few days to talk everything over and decide on a good course of action, I imagine a lot of the bans will be given back as at the very least warnings and a general purge looks like it's coming.

I was under the impression it was something we could all have a light-hearted chuckle about... If the kids injuries were serious, then I probably would have used a little more discretion... :X

Maybe you ought to copy the etiquette stickies from TL community over there so it looks like less of a free zone.
|
Man this thread exploded.
Kwark, I totally agree with your actions and sentiments. I understand the need to talk this over with the moderation staff as well.
My two cents, if posters want to make crappy posts that are in bad taste or outright wrong, they can take it somewhere else in my opinion. This isn't 4chan or youtube. That's not what I want for the TL community I'm a part of. That quote Kwark copied was saddening. That guy sounds exactly like someone we would want posting on our forums.

Eh, the bans should stay. I understand the other mods felt like they should have discussed it, yet most of the bans are warranted. It gets annoying when there's 50 trolls repeating the same shit to get a reaction.

Luckily I have minimized the General Section since yesterday.
Anyway, unrelated: Names I often see in the Ban List: StiMMey Shooting Stars taldarimAltar
And Megaliskuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu+ Show Spoiler +uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu is still banned lol I shouldn't drink Soju on middays. Iol flawless orthography.

Funny how I got banned for a few over-the-top negative remarks about Husky just before I can post some constructive advice in the thread he created, but others get away with calling people retarded. Hah. Not everyone, of course:
Ganfei2 was just temp banned for 2 weeks by micronesia.

Jinro is being polite. If the person was retarded I'm sure Jinro would not have laid into him. You have to ask these things first man.

Your ban was certainly warranted:
Tastosis performed as expected, Day9 unfortunately was unable to cast to the best of his abilities due to Husky talking bullshit nonstop as well as interrupting him all the time. Mostly, Day only got to shout "Oh no!" and "Oooooh" because that freak didn't let him talk at all. I have no idea why they let this zombie cast games.Because of his YT video views? Seriously? What a shame.
The seeming inconsistency you're highlighting also benefits from some context: ganfei is one of the most notorious repeatedly banned posters on TL. He's been banned dozens of times.
