This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |

There is a lot more than just the post in question; they usually look at history, veteran status, contributions to the community etc. Sometimes they just miss things - they are human Except for R1CH - he is not human, he is a wizard It was before he got the translator icon. Well, he did some translations about 1/2-3/4 year ago at that point and one directly before that post but does that really excuse him from it? Hm, and looking at the Shine>Bisu thread, history and veteran status don't really seem to matter.

If we were talking and I said that and he laughed, would you slap him for not contributing to the conversation?
No, but playing out the scenario in my head is making me chuckle.
Would have just said lol, but we all know where that leads..............

True, but I don't think TL should go the EJ route either. The mods are doing a good job for the most part when deciding whether or not to ban posts falling in the gray areas instead of just drawing a line in the sand.
Also, the BW sections have more veterans versus new posters and many have enough sense not to let things spiral out of control. It's like an NBA game. Sometimes, referees let certain things pass and only start calling things more tightly when things are starting to get out of hand.

If you're not sure, don't report it. Leave it up to the staff to know and enforce the policies - We don't expect you to know all our policies precisely. User reports are just the first net that catches all the common sense stupidity.

How do you report a post? I'm used to forums having a neat little "report" button on posts that you can click on to report, but there doesn't seem to be one on TL.

You don't have access to it until you have been a member of TL for 1 year. Mostly to prevent spam-reports.

You don't get the Report button until you've been here for a year. Mods can also revoke your Report button if you suck at it.

Thank you, I figured it was something similar, but I wasn't sure if it was time or post count ^_^
Curse my excessive lurking =D

So I've got a chant running through my head, "I will not get self banned waiting for trash poster to get pretty red text." Pretty terrible chant, but it's helping.

Just PM a mod with a link to the post in question if you dont havea button (like me as well). It takes a bit longer but does the same thing.

I can't believe how many people are getting banned for conspiracy theories. You would figure after the first few ones, people would think "Hmm, let's not make that really stupid post I was about to make." but nope.
It's similar to the bans for balance whining in a LR thread. It's like people know they are going to get banned, but they just can't hold back.
Like flies to a shitstorm.

the pages were were jumping faster than in an idra vs protoss LR thread..... I thought this was a really good SotG until the tyler + geoff thing went in circles

Have you guys considered using a points moderating system like mmo-champion.com? I think it would really help the community to understand the moderation better.
For example, if someone trolls they earn 5 points. A balance whine is 3 points. A one line post is 1 point. Something offensive if 10 points etc.
And then different things expire at different times so maybe an offensive would last 180 days while a troll would only last 4 weeks. If at any time a person's points go above a certain threshold, they get an automated ban based on the # of points they have.
When I first joined team liquid I got 2 warnings and a 2 day ban for "moderating" posts by saying that a certain thread should be closed. I was very confused since most forums don't warn/ban for that kind of behaviour but it took a 2 day ban for me to figure out. If instead I had gotten say 4 points for each warning and I could visually check to see my current infractions, then it would be very obvious to me that if I do it 1 more time, I will receive a 2 day ban instead of all of a sudden getting banned.
I think it will help make things a lot more consistent and fair since it's a system and method for banning rather than a council or individual moderator.

Tl.net is historically known for being snappy and precise with punishment, and for lack of a better terms, not skirting around the edges.

I think this is way too much work for the staff and not enough benefit for the users. Seems that your claim here is that it is hard to understand the moderation process. I disagree because (1) the rules are pretty simple and clear and (2) a ban is not the end of the world, it can actually help people understand how TL works. I'm pretty sure your warnings included PMs from the TL bot explaining why got you them? Seems pretty straightforward to me.

To make that kind of point system on a forum as big as TL and to rule only by it is hard. How do you determine how offensive, disrespect full, derailing, or trolling something is depends on the context, the thread, the seriousness of the discussion etc etc,
I also think it encourages "testing the fence" .If there is a certain points you get for certain shit behaviour people will use the maximum of points before getting banned, just because they can. If they get banned because they were out of line, the whole whining and arguing "I had six points left until I would get banned" willl start for every single ban where the guy was basically a total douche.
No that's not how it should work, if you are being stupid, disrespectful, mean or whatever you should get punishment and it is up to the mod to decide if they let you of with a warning because they saw it as not so severe.
edit Why thank you, to the smart person below to show of how nice people on TL are
