The trouble (and maybe why I’m not more up-in-arms about the ban) is that Danglars wasn’t a very good way to learn what American conservatives actually think. At best he was a way to learn what arguments a certain type of conservative would put up in a given debate context, but that’s only tangentially related to what they actually believe.
I’d be very interested to read, for instance, a sincere retrospective by a conservative about the whole “Flight 93 election” thing after it, maybe ironically, led to a literal violent attack on the Capitol building. But that was never gonna come from Danglars, because it might paint his “side” in a bad light. Maybe in private he considers his beliefs in a more critical light like that, but online he’s an advocate. Weak spots are to be protected, not explored, and arguments are weapons chosen to maximize impact rather than truth.
But I think a lot of people approach the thread (and online political discussion in general) in that light. Ages ago I remember somebody who used to post in the thread (handle was “CannonsNCarriers” or something similar) mentioning that he goes to that thread to fight. That’s what it’s there for. That’s what 90% of political discussion is. I’m not in a strong position to defend that POV since I don’t subscribe to it (and its a personal goal of mine to resist getting pulled into those kinds of brawls), but I certainly don’t think Danglars was/is alone in approaching political discussion this way. I’d suspect the main reason he got in more brawls than most was just that when most people disagree with you, there’s a lot more people to pick fights with.
I guess I’m wondering what people think productive dissensus should look like. I mean, rather than just litigating what constitutes posting badly enough to warrant moderation, what do we think constitutes good posting? What should people strive for? I think it was farv that wrote a post a while back arguing for an emphasis on interpretive charity, which seems right to me. Sincerity (as opposed to “bad faith”) is another virtue to strive for, but all of us are prone to motivated reasoning and self-deception on political matters, and I’d think part of the value of the thread would be in helping people overcome that.

Good posting is not that hard to define. Listening to what people have to say, not making things overly personal, avoiding inflammatory rhetoric, be open minded to a different opinion without assuming bad faith, and not trying to win arguments at all costs would make the perfect poster.
Basically something like Drone I guess. It's very hard to do consistently, especially if you are the type to get emotional over arguments. I certainly am guilty of not following my own advices much more often than I would like.
I would actually argue that 90% of the problematic posts (or posters) are primarily overly emotional. I think someone mentioned that people are taking this way too seriously. It is just a thread on a video game website, if you are on a grand quest to make a difference you REALLY came to the wrong place.

I’m kinda torn. I’d like some more divergence of ideological views, but Danglars invariable deflection or seeming refusal to answer a question without at least 2 other questions being thrown back did annoy the tits off me.
I would like to understand and find commonality with folks, frankly the only way I can do that with many right-leaning folks is to just eschew politics entirely. In the absence of them helping outline my paint-by-numbers understanding of their full positions, the picture is just an incoherent mess of conflicting ideas that makes no sense to me.
As a guy that went diagnostically crazy I had a rather strange internalised reality that made absolute sense to me at the time, and absolute zero sense to anyone else when I tried to espouse my ‘wisdom’. I feel that way trying to make sense of much of the modern right.
This isn’t necessarily a criticism of their moral compass at all, could be my lack of analytical abilities.

Reason: No matter how much you hide it on our forums with your empty, cheery, "positive posts" you still exhibit the same awful behavior you've always had of harassing people under the cover of PMs and of course outside of TL.
We don't want you on our website anymore.

Also yea I don't think anyone fell for his thin veil of positivity, at least no one that has had the displeasure of having a conversation with him outside the public eye.
I recently saw examples of his PMs to another TL user, they took up an entire page of their inbox more or less. The content was almost word-for-word what he wrote in similar PM chains to me 5 years ago. And the things he used to say online 10 years ago. Absolutely 0 change or personal development of any sort, just a public-facing facade.

It took 11 years, so if he didn't learn after a decade then this is what he deserves.

I felt sorry for him initially, figured something wasn't quite right with the guy. So, I kinda cut him some slack before passing any judgement. He did however make it extremely difficult to sympathize with him by being a complete ass to people, including myself. All I can say now is good riddance.
