You can discuss it widely if you take the correct side. You can even be flippant if your point is other people hate brown-skinned people or Muslims.
And please register your complaints in Website Feedback. They could definitely use some more response to the one-sided moderation standards. This case is a little less than perfect because (1) in the past he got baited into banworthy behavior and (2) very recently posted an obvious bait. And obviously, mods will default to "This is our house" when their banhammers troll and bait and provoke reactions, so it's helpful to remind them that it's noticed and can't be reported.
Summary (from a similar case):
In this case it's as though EZ got banned because he was being snide coupled with apparently being wrong. I think that suggests a significant ideological element. There are people dumping snark all over the thread which, the way I see it, aren't approached by moderation either because of where they are ideologically or get excused because of their significant posting history. oBlade
Let me refine my point a little. If you tread softly and don't rustle people's jimmies, you can get away with having the wrong opinion on the topic. If you look at the behavior of people with the correct opinion and think that's generally permissible behavior, you're wrong. That's only conditionally permissible if you're arguing the correct viewpoint.

To clarify, this was a requested perm. He wanted it and got it. He just wasn't enjoying himself. My comment was to tell him to keep an open mind and meet others considering how bad his posting has become regarding certain issues. To me, it felt like it was coming from a place of ignorance. Best of luck to him moving forward!

Seems to be a bit of a dick move. Posting what he posted and then requesting a ban. You are basically saying that you want to express yourself without hearing any rebuttals.

To also clarify that: He requested a perm while he was on a week ban so had to wait until the ban was up before he was perm'd. He just took the chance to post something before the ban took place.

Sorry, I don't know if this is the appropriate place or not, but I have a friend and colleague who was banned by the bot for posting commercial content in the blog section. Is there a way to ask for an unban? She wasn't even aware of what the rules are for blog content. Thanks!
