This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |
Tippecanoe was just banned by CTStalker. That account was created on 2011-05-15 03:21:57 and had 342 posts. I can honestly say this mu is a joke. Yeah those Queens man, amazing difference they made to that game, can really see it. You do realize the queens had nothing to do with it right? Its the fact that because the queens were buffed zergs can actually spread creep which is the problem. I wouldn't expect you to realize that though. You do realise that this is a discussion thread centred around the Queen buff right? Creep spread wasn't particularly good in that game either. Yeah. Like i said the queen buff correlates to more creep spread which is the real problem. Last time i checked queens made creep tumors. Not going to continue this with you because you obviously don't know anything. Happy birthday! Don't come back. Seriously. This is an example where I find context to be important, thanks CTStalker for quoting the entire conversation in the ban reason. I just learned that [b] tags screw up quotes, I think I will post about this in website feedback oO

AMA is "ask me anything" Hmmm I didn't really mean having different opinion about a ban than staff member who did the banning, more like explaining what was the ban about, for example when I asked about Belial88's ban.

Well I made a thread in Website Feedback, but the thing is it looks like it's not as active as ABL or ATLSA

Really the abl thread has turned into people talking about what should be talked about in the abl thread.

AMA is "ask me anything" Well I made a thread in Website Feedback, but the thing is it looks like it's not as active as ABL or ATLSA That's because there aren't a bunch of fools spamming your thread with hamsters and toast puns and other random crap. But a staff member will read it and eventually you'll get an answer and you can go on with your life.

Hey, the Toast puns started as a joke about a ban. You know, what we do in that thread. It got mostly overlooked until staff brought it back up and got in on it, which sparked a long-term derail of the thread, since most of the other de-railing kicked off in an effort to stop the puns in hopes we'd get back on track, until the derail-cockblocks took on lives of their own.

They may have started as a joke about a ban, but when they go on for pages it's off-topic, just like we are now.

From the ATLSA thread, responding here because I don't want to make more bad blood between the threads by continuing the derailment over there.

You know, I realize the ABL is gotten pretty spamm-y, I'm not super happy about it, and yeah it needs to be addressed. But staff is partly responsible for the state of that thread, there's been a lot of instigating. I should point out that it was two veteran staff who encouraged the 5 solid pages of toast puns. I can also think of an instance of a staff member posting funny IRC chat logs, a staff member advertising their blog/interview, etc. I think we can all (including myself, definetly) do a bit better job of respecting the thread and it's topic. But staff especially have a lot of power to influence the tone of a thread, and should keep that in mind when posting. But there also needs to be a little respect for the natural evolution of a community. That thread's off topic-ness (honestly, often encouraged by me) has lead to some pretty awesome moments. A perfect example is the ABL mafia game that's going on right now. ABL offtopic-ness has spurred a couple community members (including myself) to put in some work hosting a mafia game for some newbies who are being introduced to the mafia community for the first time. Certainly some will like it and play again, strengthening and growing the Mafia community. That's awesome. It's also gotten two people involved in working on Pony Tales, generated some cool blogs, and also led to some all around epic moments. It has contributed to the community as a whole, and maybe that's why a small sub-community has formed around it. Don't be so quick to wish it back to "the way it was" on page 200 when it was all bans all the time. It's evolved to something much more than that. Is it too 'clichy'? Absolutely. As with any part of this community, it needs to be directed and moderated appropriately. That's why I'm a bit bothered by this "allow whatever as long as it stays in the thread" attitude just as much as the 'moderate with an iron fist' attitude. Staff would never take that stance with any other part of TL, so I'm a bit disappointed that they would do so with the ABL thread. I'll say it again, you all have a lot of power to influence the tone of a thread. Mani used to be the one who'd step in when discussion got too far off topic or way off base, no one has really done anything similar since he got too busy. Do you think there's a coincidence that the thread has gotten rediculously spammific since then? We very much rely on you all to keep the peace and order on TL, even in the ABL. That's why most of us have such respect for the TL staff and what you all do. I agree with this very much. The reason I started getting upset about this and ended up posting about it was the derisive tone of a couple of posts from zatic and tofucake about the ABL community. It really got to me to see TL staff take a shit on the group I hang out with all day (ABL and SQSA basically take up all of my break time at work). I agree with their criticism to a certain extent, and I think we need to do a better job of policing ourselves, as I said before. At the same time, it pisses me off to see staff members basically declare us worthless members of the TL community who "ruined" one of the site's longstanding threads without recognizing some of the really cool shit that has gone down in here.
I don't want to go back to the days of page after page of ridiculous off-topic nonsense, but I also don't want to live in a world in which ABL Mafia or even the Hamster thread couldn't have come to pass. There's a middle ground to be found that lives up to the standards of a TL thread and also respects the really cool community that has grown around the discussion here.

Your recent posts in this thread were discussion of dAPhREAk's confusion of Vikings and Valkyries, which was indirectly ban-related but off-topic in the way the hamster/pun/etc discussions have been. Your recent posts in the ATLSA thread were bashing this thread and stating that you'd just ban all of us if you had the chance. If some of us feel obliged to address the issues you raise about this thread's culture, I think it's reasonable that we have the conversation in this thread, even if it's technically off-topic. And if you feel the need to insult this community for not doing a better job of staying on-topic, you really shouldn't post in it yourself unless it's to discuss a ban. I don't see the value in you coming in here to tell us we're a bunch of fools .

Rofl you kids take this ish way too serious. What ever happened to just quoting funny bans and poking fun at them?

Seems like you would know considering the part you take in this thread.

To the extent that we're going to have this meta-discussion (which I hope doesn't last too long before we reach some kind of consensus), could we try to leave this kind of crap out of it? It's not helping anything.
(Edit: I've said my part, by the way. I'm going back to laughing at bans. I apologize to anyone who feels like I've unnecessarily derailed the topic; I'm sure it will settle back down soon.)

Or people can just take it to PMs.
Too bad all the recent bans suck though, nothing but balance whiners. One would think that after 2 years people would learn that complaining about balance results in ban.
