im just curious but since you guys play this style with "points" doesnt it induce the strategy to always go for low scoring hands? i've noticed a couple of my friends do this when we use the "points style" to keep score.
Do you guys ever keep score using (excuse my poor canto to english ping yum) "dais" or starting with like x points ie. 1000

it's ok don't worry, It would've be boring if I just won all the time. It's refreshing to actually lose for once.

Do you guys ever keep score using (excuse my poor canto to english ping yum) "dais" or starting with like x points ie. 1000 The optimal strategy for any mahjong game has always been going for the lowest amount of points, as they are the easiest to win. In our group of mahjong, I am the scumbag that does this. Without a point system, everyone would go for a 0 point hand, and there would be no gambling done, nor any fun in creating hands of value. The game would degenerate into who can complete their random sets faster than the other people.
With a point minimum, you discourage chicken hands. The reason that most parlors play with a 1-point minimum is for the gambling aspect and payout; the games tend to be quick. Our group plays with a two-point minimum, which slows down the pace of the game slightly, but not discourage an all-sequence hand. A three point minimum mostly discourage an all sequence hand, and every match would either be going for a half/full-flush, or a pong palace game. To boost the half/full-flush reward, our group plays with 4/7 rather than the standard 3/6 for parlor.
Notable things this weekend: CSheep feeding West into a Double Win for 14 points. Blasterion: Waterloo ZoW: Going with success for Limit Hands. I don't understand how this guy does it.
Moonlight Sonata needs to be played 24/7.
Rankings so far in our play: ( I disregarded results for the first meetup, as that was not a relevant result that I could figure out, or the 3rd game where ZNF was tired and will never pay out)
Blasterion: -4 CSheep: -14 Phelix: 88 ZNF: -60 ZoW: -18 Wyrm: 8
I am the scumbag.
