Japanese mahjong rewards closed hands. Most yaku cannot be made/loses some values once your hand becomes open. Hope you enjoy the Jap rules. I've played both HK and Jap and I find that Jap mahjong requires a lot more skill to play well.

Jap requires a lot more luck with its heavy insistence on closed hands...

Wow this is seriously a thread?
Is there a TL weekend mahjong group or something? My parents and the other Asian neighbors have a weekend group that normally stretches form Saturday morning to Monday morning.

We're starting up a weekly mahjong meetup in NY. Had 2 meetings so far.

I will be available Friday, after much discussion with clients! Now, what time will the event be, so that I can be a scumbag and go to Barcraft after Mahjong games. (Unless we have games overnight).
Venture Capital is better off spent on lottery tickets rather than investing in E-Sports; you'll get a far better return. The difference is simple: Koreans are tryharding at the game, foreigners are tryharding in real-life.

That's quite a generalization. Do you mean it's more luck based because you cannot influence your draws? It's a 4 player game and you will only win 25% of all games, so "not losing" is much more important than winning.
Even then, open tanyao and yakuhai are very easy to make yaku for open hands and add up with dora for fast wins. Some houserules (kuitan nashi) don't allow open tanyao. On tenhou, that would be the first row. Scrubs on the English tenhou lobby (those who started to play because of whatever mahjong anime aired at that time) love to press those shiny buttons and make open hands, so much that the term "pon palace" was coined.

I don't live in NY, but I'd love to play you (or other TLers) on tenhou (tenhou.net/0/?7447).

Maybe, but I just don't like the idea that for some hands you have to simply sit there, do nothing (I guess you have to pick the best tiles to discard, but meh, still pretty passive), and hope to draw the right tiles to make your hand.

Also does Tenhou not allow open tanyao? I guess that explains why I couldn't make hands when I tried doing that lol.

The marked ones are "no open tanyao" ((喰い断無し)

http://www.azaz.se/mahjong/yaku overview.pdf
You can do pretty much anything with an open hand, but it will be worth less since open hands are easier to make.
Toitoi can only be open (would be a yakuman if closed)
Chiitoitsu (7 pairs) cannot be open (obviously)
