Copyright should not last more than 20 years from the time of publication, probably shorter (maybe 10 years). The creator needs time make money off their original creation, pump out special editions, etc and then it becomes public domain. We tell and retell stories since ancient times (see Sir Orfeo the retelling of Orpheus) and it makes little sense to tie up ideas when so much more can be done with it. (All the music and art inspired by Tolkien's world for instance.) Protection of IP theft must not be by any means necessary. In general protection, should restrict rival producers and not restrict how consumers are able to interact with the product. And ip protection should certainly NOT include things like Sony's XCP rootkit. | ||
