Dear TeamLiquid users, please join us at the official TSL3 Finals After-Party. Both finalists, Naniwa and Thorzain will be present at this event.
Location: Break Bar and Billiards in New York City. Address: 32-04b Broadway, Long Island City, NY 11106 Time and Date: Sunday, May 15th - 19:00 EST
Take the NQ uptown to Queens, get off at Broadway and walk one street southeast. Bar is located on the corner of Broadway and 32nd Street - Google Maps.
There is no RSVPing to this event. Break Bar holds 250 people. Yes, it's in Queens, deal with it other borough residents!
*You must be at least 21 years of age to enter*
Look how cool it is inside! Note: not everything will be in sepia.
That's right, just hours after meeting as enemies in the TSL3 finals, Sweden's hottest SC2 players are just gonna be chillin' at an NYC bar. If you've got a major man-crush on one of our finalists (and I know a lot of you do), you better book your flight now. Not only is this a chance to meet some of SC2's finest players, but it's a great opportunity to hang out with other Starcraft 2 fans.
If you're too broke for a night of drinking, I wouldn't worry about it. I hear there's going to be someone there who just made $15,000 dollars that you can rob, because we are paying the prize money in $10 bills.
Also, Lvl 20 Wizard R1CH and Lvl 20 Troll/Admin Hot_Bid will also be present to discuss the finer points of TeamLiquid with all who are interested. Other TL staff will also be in attendance.
So come on out, meet some Starcraft 2 pros, and have some fun!
to fly to america this weekend.. or to not fly to america.. that is the question..
realistically the answer would be no... late notice for work, gonna cost at least 1800-2200 return... the chance that the bar might fill up and i wonte ven be able to get inside.... but im pretty darn tempted... i mean its NY, geeks, nerds, sc2 stuff, drinking, NY...
Feel sorry for Thorzain though, gotta suck to go to the US and have a big party in your honor and not being able to drink, when he has probably been drinking since he was 15, which is what you do in Sweden.
This.... is pretty tempting, since I have a friend or two in NY anyways... however i don't know if I could rationalize going to this AND mlg this year...
Are laws in US really that strict? I mean are there police controls often with huge fines? I understand you can't have half of people there underaged, but it seems crazy to me that Thorzain wouldn't be able to celebrate his win or drown his sorrow..
Fuck yes, I'm there. Sucks for the under 21 crowd, though. any chance Thorzain and Naniwa will come outside and talk/sign with anyone who can't get inside? otherwise, I can definitely take up "getting stuff signed" duty for any local people.
Aww, New York is a bit far away from me . People who are attending please take lots and lots of photos. Videos will also be awesome . Live stream will be perfect
Hehe, kinda funny.. Thorzain has been legally able to drink for 2 years in sweden. Then he's flown to NYC and if he wins he can't celebrate his victory.
So after this place, where is the after after party??? I will be there and can't wait to meet Thorzain! He has broken the shackles of TvP and I hope he beats Naniwa!

We spoke with management and they will make an exception for one person because we said he's a guest of honor. He won't be drinking.
Unfortunately they can't make any more exceptions, so under 21 year olds you're out of luck.
I understand why bars put an age limit but do you have to be 21 to drink in bars in the US generally or is it up to the bar? Though Thorzain doesn't really look like a heavy drinker to me anyway. Naniwa on the other hand...

You have to be 21 to drink anywhere no exceptions, even at home. At bars that are not combined with a restaurant area you generally can't even go in if you are under 21, even if you weren't going to drink.

Ah ok thanks, I've always thought it was lower than that in the US for some reason. Even at home seems like a bit weird. You mean it's stricly speaking illegal to give an 18 year old friend a low alcoholic beer at home? (I understand it's probably not enforced but still)

yes it is illegal and yes it is very enforced. People in my town have been arrested for serving their children alcohol even just from an anonymous report. Some people down my street were aressted a few years ago because they let their 19 year old daughter drink at a barbecue, and their neighbors saw it from their back yard. The mother was a nurse at the high school and lost her job over the incident.

most states have a drinking age of 21 (hence need to be 21 to enter the bar)
I believe there are some that are 20 or 19 or something though.

This story doesn't represent the entire United States. I'd move away from where you live if that's the case ^_^
Underage drinking is quite common as far as I'm aware. Especially if you're at the University age.
So excited! This is going to be awesome! There's a group of us (~6-8) that get together to watch all the GSL finals (even back when it was at 6AM our time) and play 4v4s. I'm going to try convincing all of us to make the trek out to LIC (sorry, Manhattanites will be Manhattanites).
The drinking age is pretty dumb here in the states, but from my experience, it's not enforced as tightly here in NYC as in other places (I think mainly b/c the drinking and driving problem isn't one here). If you're at a restaurant nobody will check while bars are 50/50 when you're ordering a drink (generally there's nobody checking IDs at the door unless its a friday or saturday night). Nightclubs will obviously always check at the door.

You realize one of us lives in Brooklyn...damn islanders
Dam i am from NJ would easily travel into the city to go to this probably with a few friends sadly however i am only 20, looks like ill see everyone at the TSL4 after party
Hopefully no one gets into a bar fight and breaks their hand at this event. Wish I could go, but too expensive to get there for me. Sounds like it would be a blast.

Its not uncommon, but its still enforced. In my town, the popo have nothing better to do than chase around kids drinking and shutting down parties

This isn't strictly true. It depends on the state. Some states allow parents to give their children alcohol for consumption. Buying alcohol is illegal everywhere if you are under 21. In New York consumption itself is not strictly prohibited, which probably means you could drink if you are under 21, but getting the alcohol is the problem since possession is prohibited (unless given by a family member).
The important thing to note about drinking in the U.S. is that it is not a federal law, but it is a federal mandate. Essentially, states have to keep the purchasing age at 21 because if they do not, they will lose the money that the federal government gives them. But states are allowed to change it if they want at any time.
I also had a question. I have about a 4 to 6 hour drive. I could leave early in the morning and get there before the finals are supposed to be played. Would I just have to find a cafe to watch the games at online? Because I don't see how else I would see the games before getting to the after party.

There definitely needs to be a Thorzain vs Naniwa Billiards match at the party, that would be the most amazing thing, even if both are terrible at billiards.

Just to torture all the people that wish they could be there I feel like driving to the bar taking a picture from outside but never actually going in ... but I won't ... if I can make it that far I am going in :D
I've seen a lot of people posting here who live in walking distance of the bar but are to young to actually enter. So here is my solution:
All you guys should meet up in front of the bar ahead of time with a digital camera and go totally paparazzi on all TL members who go to the meet up. Take lots pictures when they arrive/enter the bar/through windows/leave drunk etc.

But I will be exercising the benefits of my old age (and 2k rent ><) to attend. =D

17 as long as your parents approve.
And are with you for 24 hours after you consume.......
I was referring to enlisting in the military actually. You only need to be 17 to enlist so long as your parents sign off on it. If you parents approve of you drinking I don't see how you could get caught in your own residence unless you have bastard neighbors like that guy earlier was talking about.
I'm only making the trip from Long Island if there will be Kpop karaoke.

Actually, being the "old guy in the bar" might be a little too weird so I'm going to probably pass, but hope everyone has fun. Now, if the Swedes had brought an entourage of 20 year old something blonde Swedish women, I would have creeped on their women all night.

In the US? If you are talking about the rest of the world there are a lot of places where it's legal to drink at 17 or under. Buying is often another matter.

In response to the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, which reduced by up to 10% the federal highway funding of any state which did not have a minimum purchasing age of 21, the New York Legislature raised the drinking age from 19 to 21, effective December 1, 1985. (The drinking age had been 18 for many years before the first raise in 1982.) Persons under 21 are prohibited from purchasing or possessing alcohol, from consuming alcohol in public (though they may do so in the privacy of their own homes with consent of a legal guardian), or from having a blood alcohol level of more than 0.02% while driving.
Too bad that place isn't one of those joints that also serves food and doesn't restrict entrance based on age. I actually drink at places like that a lot.
Does anyone know how is the parking there? My friends and I are driving down to go to the afterparty. Without the over 21 rule, I bet there will be over 250 people, so maybe it is a blessing in disguise.

It's not easy to get to, for most of the people attending. The only people it's probably easy on are Queens people and Long Islanders, as it's fairly roundabout getting there from even Brooklyn. By car, you're fine in brooklyn but pretty much fucked from every other borough, and even MORE fucked coming from out of the city. For the most part, it's silly whinging though. For example, it takes me 2 hours-ish to get to the east side of queens (flushing) from Staten Island.
As an aside, if people ARE afraid of the neighborhood, don't be, it's basically an arts district with studios and whatnot galore.
If bars are anything like in the UK once your in, and somebody else has brought you a drink your all-right. With Chill probably trying to get Thorzain drunk I'm sure he won't have any trouble getting drinks. Also if he pays with his big winners check I'm sure the bar staff will overlook his age.

Dude there was a crack epidemic there like 30 years ago, it might still be a dangerous place!

It's not too hard to get to. It's only a few blocks off of the GR line's Steinway stop. As well as the NQ stop mentioned by waxangel

Yep, getting to flushing from Brooklyn is a pain. But it's only about an hr from 71st station on the D. So it shouldn't be more than 30 minutes for anyone coming from the city.
On May 12 2011 06:59 Loomies wrote: Im not familiar but whats wrong with Queens? is it an unfriendly neighborhood?
Yea, like the guy said that comment in the OP was mostly in reference to the perceived difficulty and subsequent complaining that people in the region can have about getting to any outer borough, really, not just Queens. But as a 'neighborhood' of over 2 million people, it's remarkably safe and friendly. Very residential and such. But much worse than my Brooklyn!

I'm well aware, I'm just explaining the general sentiment of "ZOMG QUEENS WTF" that happens every time that something is held there. It is indeed easy to get to.
So wait... I am sorta interested in this but I am really broke and I know on OP, you said I can rob someone but I don't wanna get arrested and all... plus, I'm too nice to rob... so I guess it's no go for me??

Haha, this was the first thing I looked at, I'll admit. Their beer list is decent enough (see http://break-ny.com/drinkmenu.html). On tap, it looks like your standard terrible macrobrews with some decent local stuff and Belgium/German classics. On rotation (does that mean in bottles? or just "randomly present"), a lot of delicious sounding ales and porters. Nom nom nom :D.

If I were to take Amtrak from Wilmington, DE to Penn Station, NYC
How would you go about getting there from there? I'm utterly terrible with cities and all that fancy gettin-around ya'll do.
Would I be able to take the "NQ" while inside Penn Station etc or is it something else? I know NY is only about 2hrs away by train but i've only been once and I had a tour guide that knew all the transportation tricks.
Also, if i were to come out are there any cheap'ish hotels nearby and/or a nice floor? :p

Penn has the red line (1/2/3) and blue line (A/C/E) so exit the station and walk one block east to Herald Square, and take the yellow line (N/Q) uptown to Queens.

And most New Yorkers don't count Staten Island as a borough anyways. They might as well be part of New Jersey.
Someone should make sure he doesn't trash his room like an angry rock star. (I'm joking, glad to see what you said Thorzain said in the LR thread, that Nani congratulated him first. Really cool to see him so mannered in the face of the loss.)
And xie xie for the live reporting from the bar.
[Edit: Somehow missed your "no Naniwa didn't show" the first time, but saw it later, so I edited out my "But no Naniwa still, right?" which you quoted below...]

Man, this was a blast so far. I was so afraid I would get kicked out I wouldn't go near the bar, but turned out to be a BLAST!!! Thorzain is an awesome guy to talk to.
-_- D: D: why in NY lol. My favorite sports are hockey and starcraft. And what I like bout sc, is that unlike hockey, players are easily accessible. Wish I was in NY naoooo.

Imagine how everyone sad outside of the US (except the raffle prize winner) is that they dont get to come to this. Can't wait for the pictures.
If only I had a kickass SK T1 jersey/jacket (really anything would do, even the new orange ones, but I'd hate to misrepresent myself and other teams by sporting OZ/CJ matierial [geez thanks kOre] ).
If only the US wasn't so full of prunes that people about to turn 18 are allowed into bars (serisouly wtf)
If only I didin't live on the other side of the Atlantic.
Then it'd be a good time. But it seems to have been a good time anyways, so
Me and Jpak made it in safely, we cloaked ourselves but the waitress was like a detector, of course I promised to not drink. She took my credit card as collateral lol.... but I got to stay, and had a hell of a time
Had so much fun last night. Thorzain is such a nice and humble person. I only wish I could stay a little bit longer, on my way out I saw Slog coming in.. poor timing _-_
