CSL101: How to Meet People Like You

College can be overwhelming for the average StarCraft player. For example, you might not know where to find fellow StarCraft players. Or you might be worried about the future of your CSL team. You might not even know what CSL is. These are all very serious problems. This is why you are here. And this is why we are here (for you).

Step 1: Know your enemies and know yourself.

What is the CSL? Does the C stand for collegiate? Does that mean my Diamond-league neighbor who lives near my college can play on my team? (No.) BW or SC2? When can I start curb-stomping Rutgers?

To put it simply...

The CSL is exactly what it sounds like: a collegiate StarCraft league where students across North America put aside their homework, friends, and Saturday nights for the thrill of real-time strategy—a league where students fight for their team, their university, and most of all, for e-Sports.

If that doesn't help, continuously visit http://www.cstarleague.com, email cstarleague@gmail.com with any questions left unanswered, and if you’re still confused, don’t be! Just remember the following:

MISSION OBJECTIVES

- Find FIVE SC2 players who are currently enrolled at your university.
- Recruit a team by September 25th
- Prepare for battle by October 2nd.
- Take no prisoners.

Step 2: Scout

As any good StarCraft player will tell you: scout. You should start scouting as early as possible. If you are a senior in high school, select your college carefully according to their rank in the CSL. If it is too late, scouting can still fix the poorest of your poor life decisions.

Let us assume the worst-case scenario. You are a freshman at the University of StarCraft. You do not know anyone who likes SC2 (everyone is a BW fan).

First, check if your school is registered or pre-registered with the CSL. The friendly folks at CSL will connect you with the coordinator...if he (or she) exists. If the position is unfortunately open, rise to the challenge! Send an email to cstarleague@gmail.com and volunteer to coordinate for your team:

To: cstarleague@gmail.com
Subject: I HAVE FELT THE RUSH

> Dear CSL,
> I would like to coordinate for the UNIVERSITY OF STARCRAFT.

If you man up and choose to coordinate, continue scouting for additional players. If you would like to play under someone else’s leadership, scout for people you can trick into coordinating. The procedure is the same:

1. Go to TL College Locations and look for your university.

If you do not find your college (this is unlikely), don’t worry. StarCraft players lurk. But you will find them.

2. Make a teamliquid thread.

Use the SEARCH FUNCTION first and follow good thread-making guidelines.

3. Explore your university website.

Look under CAMPUS LIFE or STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS for gaming leagues, eSports organizations, or StarCraft teams. Stop by your Fall 2010 Activities Fair. Google “University of StarCraft” StarCraft.

4. Poster the campus for recruits.

Target lampposts, walls, monuments, staircases, people, and last but not least, poster boards. Be inventive, welcoming, threatening. Do whatever it takes.

5. Contact KASA, TASA, CSA, JSA, CS Listservs.

> Dear Koreans,
>
> The University’s honor is in danger. The stakes are
> StarCraft II. Will you join us?
>
> Sincerely,
> Concerned Student

6. Broadcast on B.net.

7. Update your Facebook status.

8. Incorporate into Daily Conversation.

Hot CSL girl: So, today I got breast implants. And I also joined CSL. I’m not sure which one hurts better.

Step 3: Skyhigh Success

Congratulations. With any luck, you will now have your FIVE PLAYERS. Or maybe you will have 44.

Or maybe you will have Skyhigh.

You are now ready to take your team into the CSL playoffs, the CSL grand finals, and the annals of CSL history. Take the final step.

REGISTER YOUR TEAM.**

August 25-September 25

**note that registration is not up yet but IT WILL BE, and glorious instructions will be available. In the meantime, RECRUIT FOR THE SWARM.

* Check out the CSL website for updates.
* Become a fan on Facebook!

Stay tuned for CSL102: How to Get Further Involved and Promote eSports and Etcetera (title TBA). Involves t-shirts, music videos, and rap battles.

The TL College Locations thread is not that accurate. It still has fanaticist under Cornell and doesn't have a single member of the Cornell CSL team.

Also, you didn't mention the official list of teams for the coming season http://www.cstarleague.com/node/79.

Check and see if you college is there and contact your coordinator.

Hopefully I can find 4 more people that are capable of reaching at least platinum before this deadline hits.

Yeah, so I'm fairly certain this sort of club wouldn't ever get approved at my school. I don't know what faculty would sponsor it, and to pass, you have to go through both student government and a funding board. You then have to have a constitution and be questioned by a committee.

I even had trouble starting the statistics majors union until the director of undergraduate studies for the department came to the questioning meeting and asked them why the fuck we weren't a recognized student group yet. That got us approved pretty quick.

I also happen to be in student government rofl.

Why do you need university approval to play Starcraft? You don't have to be an officially sanctioned club to participate in CSL, everyone on the team just has to be currently enrolled at the school!
good sir, you appear to be somewhat lacking in intelligence. please refrain from posting until this is remedied, since it renders your opinions slightly less than correct and has a tendency to irritate more informed forum-goers
