You make a really good point whats going to happen to the ppl on optus :S i hardly see how they can compete competitively with 450+ ping to the SEA servers

Would totally love to see something actually be set up.

I'm probably going to surrender to Kotick and buy both the US and SEA versions of the game.

I'm going to be majorly pissed if that is the case. Here's hoping Blizzard can work something out.

It's like they realised our population is too small to be a large market so they decided to make us buy two copies to make up for it -.-

Right - I read about some of their reasoning regarding it, and I certainly do understand... but what I don't get is how just about any game on steam can be played to any location, yet seemingly SC2 can't. It's like the rules have suddenly changed for SC2, and SC2 only.

Meanwhile - If we did get a website and proper leagues going, I'd love to help out with commentaries and such. I'll be setting up my youtube channel soon to give some a go once I get some games going.

The question is... are we going to play with the south-east asians, or are we going to fake USA addresses and register to the USA version?
Say if Moonglade is on US server and Pinder is on SEA server you have the 2 best AU SC2 players split with 0 chance of games between them unless someone gets 2 copies of the game, and if other people register onto USA it will be even worse to keep together (like a tight community, imagine [TA] with Cam n sht playing on asia server while Del is a loner on ICCUP) unless you want to run a tourney for each... but yea GOOD WORK BLIZZARD.

Firstly, let me say let's not turn this into an Asia/US server thread. We may find that when the servers go live at release, the Oceanic/Asia server latencies are quite suitable, but until we know let's just focus on this website for now.

I work as a Web dev and have toyed with the idea of setting up a comprehensive website for the Australian community. One that allows people to discuss, talk about and run tourneys effectively. Essentially making up for the shortfalls that the Battle.net 2.0 has brought about.

...

1. Does this require a new website, or is there one on the way/just small changes needed to some of the current sites around.
2. What features would you like to see on the site - a forum is inevitable, news is nice etc. But what else would you like to see?

1. I am going to say YES. Sites such as Cybergamer and TL.net are not suitable for our aussie needs at this point. That doesn't mean a new site has to replace them; they can work in unison. For example a thread on Cybergamer could announce a tournament on the new site, and vice versa.

Teamaus has been mentioned, but to me it seems we don't know when or where it is coming back, and maybe we can't be certain that it is at all. Some people in this thread seem to understand the needs of a successful sc2 community site, and there's no guarantee these needs can be met by teamaus.

Since we undoubtedly need an aussie/nz community site, and nothing clear or well defined is in existence/in the works, I feel we should strike now while the proverbial iron is hot. We definitely have the vision and enthusiasm to build the flagship site for the australia/nz sc2 competitive scene. The short answer to your question is yes, I think it is absolutely necessary, and there is a definite need for it.

2. DeL has given great suggestions, and also there are many model sites out there (TL.net, iCCup, ozfortress as i mentioned earlier) which we can gather ideas from and consolidate. I'll mention that I think the idea of a ranking system is excellent. Something similar to the ATP Rankings in Tennis was mentioned - competing in regular tournaments and leagues would give ranking points, and big annual tournaments would give the opportunity to win big points. At the end of the season, the top 16 ranked players for example would be eligible to attend an invitational for cash prizes and prestige - just a thought. This would be a pivotal feature for giving incentives to Australians, New Zealanders, Asian players, and even casual players to get involved in the scene. We could also work with Cybergames, and pre existing tournament series such as the Trans Tasman and State of Origin, and integrate their tourneys into our ranking system.

Making it Happen

We are off to a good start; Shocker88 has said he would be willing to contribute to web design, DeL has said he would be prepared to organize tournaments and leagues, Duckvillelol plans to do some commentary/vod content and a couple of other posters have said they would be happy to help with donations and general admin duties. Here's what I propose from this point. I have some time off in the next few days, and so I can flesh out in detail the specific features and components that we need for the site, and possibly do a rough mock-up of the main page. This should take a couple of days. I don't expect this to be perfect, so I'll post the writeup in this thread for feedback and suggestions. Once we have a solid idea to run with, I'll make a fresh TL.net thread describing the model comprehensively to try and get more people involved, perhaps even non-aussies/nzers would be willing to lend a hand.

At that point, I'm hoping Shocker88 could get the ball rolling and actually begin work on the site. I am prepared to pay for domain name rental, and contribute to any other costs that may be necessary for starting up and perhaps compensating Shocker88 and any other web devs for time and effort spent working on this. Once we have a nice and clean central website up, anything is possible really. Leagues, tournaments, regular meetups, possible sponsorship, co-operation with other gaming establishments, and more.

Once the Ball is Rolling

A couple of posters have raised concerns that we may get off to a slow start, and players may log on to find an empty forum and never come back. The answer to this is that building up the site will take time, and there should be no delusions about an 'instant hit'. Perhaps it may take off sooner than we expect, perhaps later, but they key thing is that I'm sure it will happen. Also, like DeL mentioned, once we host a couple of tournaments or start a league with the site name on it, and registration done through the site, exposure and site activity will soar.

I'm prepared to devote time daily to administrative duties such as updating ranks, organizing events, writing a site/community blog, posting news etc. I'm also willing to contribute money for tournament and league prizes, and I'm sure there are others willing to do the same if we are able to present a sound and reasonable plan. Therefore we won't fail for lack of commitment. Forming a dedicated core staff and admin group would be easy given the enthusiasm in this thread, but first we need to clearly map out the idea, and have a plan of how to get there.

If we get the site up by release with at least some features working, we will be laughing. As soon as the Au/Nz masses start playing sc2, they will want a place to discuss the game, see the latest news, find out about tournaments happening, and just meet other people that share an interest in the game.

Any other opinions/ideas or people wanting to contribute lets hear about it

Edit: Just saw this, great example of awesome things a well established community can achieve: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=133877

Nice post Bostic,

Hopefully I can get my own commentating thing going properly (see my recent blog post folks!) and I can help out that way - I'm also more than happy to help with looking after the forums and whatnot.

Once del is back from Canberra I'm sure he can clear up a couple of things.

Cheers for the good posts guys. I'm definately committed to the project, however I'm on work based trip till the end of the week so I'll only be on and off for the week. Will get it started this Saturday once I'm back home however would be great to get some planning done on the features we'll run during the week so I have some targets to work towards when I start up.

I've asked Bostic to start working on detailing out features etc, so if you have any ideas for features please post them in here.

Lastly, anyone else who has web design, or development experience would be greatly appreciated. Things will be quicker with more developers on board and I am average at design at the best of times - a designer would really be appreciated to help even if only for a few hours.

Anyway post away - any features or anyone with experience willing to help! Good to see so many enthusiastic people here.

I used to admin Teamaus.org, but due to the sites inactivity it wasnt worth keeping up anymore.

I currently have webhosting, and would be happy to re-host another Aussie SC Community Website. But would need people to help manage it.

Teamaus.org won't be available as it is parked for another 3 months. I could get us another domain name.

Yeah for now, we should assemble some staff and define the key features. Getting estimates on cost and time required could be handy too. Assigning some tasks to anyone interested in helping will speed it up nicely.

I am of the opinion that if we really want this we have to get it all done and all done well or not at all - set up the site with a lot of innovative content and well presented before even trying to host a tourney or forums or whatever. Get a full staff ASAP too - that comes after we define the features and that which requires upkeep though.

Once lots of that hosting and graphical stuff is sorted it's easy to start adding some content as there are a lot of ideas floating around.

We can and will!

I'll msn you tomorrow DeL so we can get further discussion of ideas going. Freezer_au i'll also pm you about possible webhosting, and get in touch with other posters in the thread that have expressed interest in helping out.

As Shocker88 has mentioned, a web designer to design the site would be very helpful, and also someone to do a banner and a bit of artwork perhaps.

A staff member from ozfortress has agreed to give a rundown of his thoughts and experiences of first starting their site. This should be insightful and a great help to us.

Now that would be interesting to hear!

I think we need to gather a collection of what tourneys are running/going to be run in aus so they can be noted down in the best way - anyone know of any planned events? I suppose that's partially limited given the 'no lan' option

Edit: Trying to think of possible names for the site/community... ANZ SC! Get sponsorship from ANZ! bahahah.

Auscraft? Something like that I guess. I'm sure someone more creative will come up with something.

Any thoughts on getting the word about the site around? Or just by word of mouth?

Auscraft is really the first one that comes to mind but I think we could definitely come up with something more unique.

I'd be very interested in contributing to the development of the site. I can use photoshop, so if you need graphics and stuff I can do that (as long as you tell me what you want, I'm pretty bad at coming up with my own designs). I can also do writeups etc. if you guys want.

On the other hand I'd be extremely interested in helping to coordinate the Queensland scene. In particular I've had the idea kicking around in my head of starting an eSports club at UQ I just don't know if there'd really be the interest. I figure with the release of SC2 the interest in competitive gaming will really grow so I might just put some posters up around uni and see if I can elicit some interest. I'd be so so sooooo happy if we could organise something similar to the CSL. That said, if any of you guys are attending any of the universities in Brisbane I'd love to hear from you so we can try and get the scene going. There's even the possibility of forming a strong competitive lan scene in Brisbane too because we have a number of quality internet cafes in the city that could really be good to hold tournaments in.

Gawd, talking about what could be really gets me so excited... >_>
