I might be able to come, live in ohio and don't have that much money, but if I do get a job then I can probably make it.

Just talked with our lead sponsor 2 days ago. He said he is putting something together and he will let me know soon. Be patient ^^

Sorry to be the one to have to say negative things, but my advice would be to actually give reasons instead of arbitrarily picking a price. Also, use the three months to get something concrete set up with your sponsor in the four months you have to organize this, and then post about it. I would also contact Seoul PC and try to get a group discount instead of just paying the standard rate.

The initiative is great, and your enthusiasm is great, but really you should do something to distinguish this LAN from any of the others that are hosted in DC by the usual people. What is different about a LAN "hosted" by you? You haven't worked out a possible prize above what the entrants pay in three months, and there's no discount for going to Seoul PC. I fail to see what is different about a "TAD sponsored" LAN other than the name of the thread. Why is there even a $20 entry fee? Why not $15? Why not no fee?

I just feel that people have been running these DC/Nova LANs and yours seems exactly the same, except people pay an entry fee and its called a TAD LAN. Yes, I know the entry fee goes to prizes, but lots of kids go to LANs just for fun and have no chance of winning. Why should they go to this one and pay $20 for exactly the same experience?

#1, the 20$ buy-in is to make the prize-pool bigger for the participants, thus hopefully increasing the motivation to win games... Also, I have been communicating with our sponsor since the idea for this LAN arose (i.e. 2 months ago). We have been going back and forth about what we are going to offer to the winner/finalists, and that is what sets this LAN apart from the others. On top of that, It's "hosted" by TAD because a few of the team members from TAD orchestrated the LAN and are going to be attending it. Seoul PC does not offer "group discounts". Hope that answers your questions.

HB mentioned some good points but I also need to chip in. There is an overall problem going on here. There is absolutely a lack of identity with this lan. It seems to want to be a competitive lan/tournament with the buy in but so far has a fairly casual (and small) attendance list and not much hype. Also many people are interested in coming but not play in the tournament. More posts in this thread are questions that don't get straight answers or of people saying the buy in is steep than of actual people signing up or how epic this shit is gonna be.

The entry fee is scaring people away from this and it is rather steep especially when you consider PC costs as well for 6-7 hours this will be a combined $35 plus dinner after and that's over $55 for a full experience on lan day. Even for those of us with jobs that's not just loose change I'll find hanging around my desk. You are trying to get a competitive event setup here but it's not working. Why? There are 2 issues I'll just throw out there, this isn't really meant to bash on anything or offend anyone just a few things that are important to keep in mind.

1. It's been months and you can't give specifics on prizes/sponsorship issues.

If you want to host a competitive event these are absolute MUSTS. You're scaring casual users away with the entry fee and the competitive users are looking at this right now and laughing because you can't give straight answers on sponsorship. I've had people tell me they question if TAD even has legit sponsors. If this is meant to be a high profile event you need to leave no questions up in the air. It's been months there really is no excuse here.

Why would a high profile player travel for an event like this? :O

2. Because of issue #1 it's been months and this LAN still doesn't have an identity.

There are so many questions to ask!

Why is TAD doing this? You mention in the original post you are interested in getting e-sports going and to build TAD's brand/image. Scaring 80% of your potential userbase away with a steep buy in isn't going to help anything or increase the TAD image.

An important question one should always ask themselves when planning a lan/event, what do the people want? What would benefit people who are coming to this lan?

TAD is a new team to the bw community. Many players are total unknowns, the TAD name isn't strong enough by itself to draw people. People won't see this thread and say "Hell yeah I love TAD I'm going to this LAN! I need their players autographs!" They will instead see this thread and a steep buy in and not a very solid attendance list and questions left unanswered and say "I'm not going to that lawl." and believe me, I know, they're saying exactly that.

Answer these questions and make sure to keep the users in mind when hosting these lan's, because ultimately it's the users who dictate if it's a successful lan/event or not. Stay away from the arbitrary ultimatums and instead throw up polls and let the people decide. take it from me, I've been hosting successful lan's in the area for 11 months now.

The buy-in is obviously only for the people planning to participate in the actual tournament... if they are just coming to hang out then there's no reason to pay the buy-in, only the usage if they use a computer... The "steep" buy in of 20$ hasn't even been complained about, and it was put in place to motivate the participants to try harder to win, thus increasing the earnings of the winner. As I stated in my response to Hot_Bid, our sponsor is cohesive to the number of people going to the LAN and wants to wait a little bit until it unvails the prizes. TAD is a fairly reputable team with some known gamers, especially for being a new team. I don't feel the buy-in is steep, and there have been very few complaints about it actually. I will not change it unless I feel the need. Thanks.

If the buy-in is only for the tournament, then I might drop by ~3 PM to give LuckyFool some pro advice, play some games with people who got knocked out of the tournament and just to eat some BBQ later with the crowd and meet some of these TAD guys (who are apparently very good unknowns )

If someone needs a ride back to bethesda/rockville/silver spring area after the LAN, I can give you a ride also

None of our good players can make it, since they must travel too far.. at the moment the only people from TAD coming are the leaders/managers (myself, tofucake and caucasianasian). No gosu's sorry :D

EDIT: Stay tuned for prize information!
