Evening TL brethren, Just wondering if I should be doing lifts? I've been working out without deadlifts etc seriously for 2 months, and have seen significant improvement, but the more the better . So should I add the into the routine or are they simply another exercise that'll be mo different? What do they target? Thanks and have a merry Christmas :D

If your question is to add in deadlift into your routine then HELL YES!

If there's one lift besides maybe squat you should be doing its deadlifts. 1-2x5 sets once or twice a week would be good

If you do one lift in the gym, it should be squats.
If you do two lifts in the gym, they should be squats and deadlifts.
For three lifts, it depends more on your goals, but generally power clean, press, or bench are good options.

if there's one lift u do, shouldn't it be deadlifts?
squats don't do so much for ur upper body

@neocarious. nice progress @siriusface. Few things in life are certain. Squatting and Deadlifting are two of them. They work approximately everything.
Had one of the best workouts of my life (got lots of videos btw ). Almost didn't even get into the gym, i would have been devastated Wore my Sambas which are a million times better than running shoes for lifting. Also switched to hook grip which even though my thumb is tender and i have new calluses felt pretty awesome Got snatches pretty solid up to 195 as can be seen here: + Show Spoiler +http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvvLlkXleWQ Having matched my PR in snatch, obv time to start C&Jing heavy with new and improved form(grip/catch). Clean and jerked 245: + Show Spoiler + Around this time, two randoms that were prob at the school to watch a girls bball game come into the gym. One promptly goes to the bench to show his buddy his sicklife 205 bench(almost dropped it on himself) At this time I load up 255 with the intention of just cleaning it. I get it up super ez so i jerk it like a boss (destroying old PR by 20kg). Kids give me weird/awe looks as they leave the gym. Cleaned a couple more times. Partner reminded me i was jumping(DURR why do i forget this) and i missed 275(10lbs off pr) but then got it here: + Show Spoiler + I feel like i'm pulling it pretty high and kinda unnecessarily squat cleaning it? Maybe i could do a lot more? idk Still had energy so i did 3x5@155 for OHP and 12 8 8 for chin ups. Made huge improvements on my form and all my lifts and all around probably one of my best days in the gym ever.

The reason why I chose squats is because you can do them 3 days a week for 3-5 sets a session, depending on your level. Obviously it's hard to compare the two in terms of order of importance, but deadlifts are generally done once or twice a week for 1 set a session.
Again, it's kind of hard to compare the two and I'm sure there will be people disagreeing with me here. I just prefer to call squats the #1 exercise for that reason, with deads being a close second.
Decaf:
Goddamn nice workout. The most impressive video for me was that 245 C&J; that was beautifully executed. Obviously the 275 clean was damn nice too.
And here I am backsquatting in the 240-265 range ;_;.
Anyway, I can't compete with Decaf in terms of kickass workouts, but today I did alright. Backsquat at 245x5x3, three sets of weighted dips (12x5x3 lol), three sets of weighted pull ups (25x6x3), and bench (190x5x3). If my dumb ass would stop getting sick I could start catching up to the beasts around here.

nice job!! still need to finish your pull. just keep working!
pulling high is fine. Just gives you more time to get under.

Oh god. Just got back from getting a month at 24hour fitness. The manager tried to sell me a personal trainer x.x It was pretty ridiculous. He was telling me about how the guys was going to teac me how to use machines and cables and help me set up a 4 day split.
You guys are terrible. It was really hard to avoid smirking ><

Oh god i would have died laughing and smacked him in the face and given him a stern lecture.
God damnit i've become such a workout elitist snob

i am officially announcing my intention to do the 24 24 24 in 24 challenge, or the marathon challenge (26.2 26.2 26.2 in 26.2). it's run 24 miles, eat 24 krispy kremes, and drink 24 beers in 24 hours. it's a vicious contest requiring both high mileage capability and high drinking capability. im not sure when im gonna go for it. but im starting from scratch on my running due to ~3 months off (hamstring injury from playing ultimate frisbee -- no cross training in the meantime) and my alcohol tolerance really sucks.

lol Tyler... don't kill yourself!
I've never heard of that one though. I've heard of the Krispy kreme one where you run 2 mi and eat 12 in an hour though.
Of course, I absolutely cannot recommend any of these things from a health standpoint but yeah...

Is there any bodyweight alternative for the deadlift? I'm home for the break with no nearby gym.
|
king deadlift
im sure it doesn't really hit ur upper body though
but i don't think there is an equivalent for that. gymnastic isometrics can hit that stuff real good though

Did my last set of cardio for the year yesterday. I will probably only did 3-4 more workouts before the year ends as well.
Definite new years resolution this year, quit drinking for a few months.
But not tonight!
