However, the relationship between damage, inflammation and DOMS is not yet completely understood.[2] Two other hypotheses that have been advanced to explain DOMS, muscle spasms and the presence of lactic acid in the muscle, are now considered unlikely to be correct, since there is evidence to refute them.[4] In particular, lactic acid is removed from the muscle within an hour of intense exercise, and cannot therefore cause the DOMS which normally begins about a day later.[6]

No, read this: http://www.eatmoveimprove.com/2009/11/the-truth-about-lactic-acid/ DOMS is also fairly well understood. Wiki is not up to date.

My question is: Is this just as good as free weights? I'd rather not be doing an half assed exercise machine. My body feels pretty destroyed today though. Can't wait till friday !

Are you referring to the smith machine? If so, stop/don't use it, it doesn't work any of your stabilizing muscles. and doesnt put nearly as much hair on your chest. and shallow: BEAAAAAAAAAAAST, i started at 425 in june, if i don't watch myself you might catch up :p

Cheers for that clarification. I'll stay away from the smith machine then even though it seemed useful for starting out. Edit: I also train alone if that has any relevance.

I think the last time I used the smith machine was about 2 years ago and that would have probably been bench.

Training alone has no relevance to it when you're starting out because you're not lifting to your max. Just common sense is all you need.
