If he's worth having as a friend he'll understand. If he freaks out and unfriends or something, well, you're free.
OR stop caring about wins and play with the guy anyway. Make lighthearted fun of him when he fails. Eventually he should get better right? Is that how you treat your friends? "You suck! Step the fuck up or go somewhere else!". Remember that friendship goes both ways. I have played a lot with him only for fun, not caring wither I win or not. But he has been playing this game since before I got a beta key, and he's been playing it near everyday as well. So if he is getting better, its very slow. And now that I've decided to get better at the game myself, its doubly frustrating to keep getting loss after loss after loss because he wants to play with me. That is super tough and I feel for you. I have a couple of friends who want to learn dota 2, but they are at like below 20 games and just die do to not knowing about specific heroes(wisp was an eye opener for them). They know they suck, though, so its easier for me. My girlfriend wants to learn to, so that is going to be another level of learning. You know your friend better than us, so you know what he will respond to. I personally lightly mock my friends when they make stupid decisions or warn them with phrases like “you are going to regret that”. The key with telling someone they screwed up is to not dwell on it. Just let them know they made a mistake, but also let them know what they can do next to get back into the game. To many people focus on the mistake and trying to drill it into someone, as if dying didn’t do that. If you need him to buy an item like Mek, explain how good it is for him(mek makes you super tanky for a support) and how it will also help the team. One of my buddies loved building orchid on Enchantress until I told him how Mek would make being in the jungle easier with all the regen and armor. It was like a new world for him and now he just tried to build mek on any support he can. Also, just tell him you want to focus down on playing a few heroes. Find a good combo between one of the five heroes he is good with and just focus on that. I play a mean Disruptor, so one of my buddies always takes Drow Ranger, since they work well together. Its not some game breaking combo, but it works for us. Don’t get caught up the “meta game” for pro players. Just run Sven and KotL for unlimited stuns and have fun with that. Pub games are not team games. P.S. I am not amazing at Dota 2, but I play with a lot of people who are way worse than me. With my newbie friends I play exactly the same way. I do not dwell on their mistakes and do not point them out in the first place, but rather subtly tell them what to do next instead of trying to sound bossy. It doesn't help telling people how bad they are because they it will just create a negative atmosphere. Rather laugh when it is applicable, and talk between yourselves about how that situation should never happen again. I've also found a way of letting my friends support the team by saying how good a certain item will be. It works sometimes!
The best part about a lot of the team based items in Dota 2 is that they are pretty awesome for the user. Mek has a really smooth curve to getting it and makes anyone who has it must more survivable. The same goes with pipe and I love having a Darkseer with both and being immune to other support’s attacks.
Playing with newer friends requires people to step out of the mindset of the meta game and all the stuff they see in pro-games. That shit does not apply to people who have never seen a full power Puck or dealt with a good Meepo. Until you grasp how fucked up Dota 2 is, explaining the meta to them is just confusing. I like making simple combo with sets of heroes and running with that. I recently ran an aggressive tri-lane with Sladar, Witch Doctor and Shadow Shaman with two new buddies in RD. It was the unlimited stun tri-lane and we had a blast. We topped it off with an offlane tusk and DP mid.
With new people or friends that are bad, if you make the plan for them and just run with it, the game is more fun. Playing “correctly” is for later everyone has more games under their belt.

I swear my real life friends are so fucking trash at this game
Every time they make me play a hard carry I get no fucking space to farm what so ever
Like, just now I was playing lone druid. Had like 65 cs, one tower last hit and one kill at 10 mins. Oh but now we're just going to either a) leave you to your own devices in your lane without wards or bothering to carry a tp scroll because you can handle a 4 man gank on your own, right? or b) follow you around and take farm until I tell them to stop it, when this happens, repeat point a.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.

Like it's so irritating, when I'm not playing hard carry so I'm playing support or mid or something I can easily just go around with them and say when to back off/when not to etc., but as soon as I play hard carry and they get to run around on their own they just derp around like fucking idiots.

Holy. Fucking. Shit. This is why I play support with my friends. I can always yell at them and say "No, get back in the jungle and farm. We don't need you, we will be fine," or "I know we died, so did they, that was the plan. Get back in the jungle and play Diablo!" Its easier to make space for a slow carry than it is to play carry with no space.

Yeah, being an grown ass adult and having a girlfriend who lives with me, you are pretty much the Duke of DoucheLand. If she needs to ask me a question or is leaving, I will pause the game for 30 seconds to a minute to say goodbye or answer the question. And sometimes shit happens. Other people have lives, wives, children and all sorts of other things. A bit of a douche and if you were on my team and did that, I might forget to buy wards a couple times in response. But, lucky for me, I only play in 5 man stacks.

I've never understood the "I am impatient, must unpause" mindset.
If you're impatient, surely the best thing to do is not to ruin the current game with one button, thus consigning yourself to 30 minutes of miserable, one-sided, all-around crap dota.
Surely the option which benefits your impatience is to wait 1 minute and get a fair game now, rather than having to derp around for 30 and maybe get a fair game next queue?

Shitty team compositions, shitty laning, double jungles all day long, yesterday. My team even leave me(spec) alone in safe lane against range heroes and rather dual lane in hard lane while we have doom and furi at jungle.
Alsi I did pick meepo, lost a game as 8-6-10, enemy timber asked me 'why meepo?'. I said it is not the meepo rather team play and composition that sucks. I mention my wr about %50. He said 'it is not that good bro'. People expect to have %90+ wr for every hero i think.

Yes because unpausing means I dont have a girlfriend and Im not an adult. Are you one of those people who thinks unpausing is reportable under ability abuse?

It's called MANNERS. And clearly, you have none and you are problably one of the reasons why the Dota 2 community is so unpleasant.
Whenever someone pauses, I never unpause unless no one told the other 9 the reason and we've waited for more than 2 minutes. And when there is a reason, I don't unpause at all. Just let them finish what they're doing and then have a nice game. How hard can it be? If you're in a hurry, don't go queue.
|
I would probably report someone who repeatedly unpaused on one of their teammates. That's obnoxious enough behaviour that it qualifies as ruining a game, which, to me, is the simplest litmus test for deserving a report.
I really don't understand impatient people who play dota. Dota is, by definition, a game requiring patience. For goodness' sakes, if you die at a high level you can end up spending whole minutes on the sideline. If you can't wait a couple of extra minutes at the start, you might want to reconsider your preferred genre.

Now convert that into time you spent losing, and let it pour.

Playing on friend's laptop is really distracting. And sometimes I really hate those 5stacks+picking all the heroes, kunkka+rubick+es, what a fcking joke. Somehow coco's rum is a good against to bara's burst damage.
