I've got to agree. I don't think the people who mock the mute system realize that they're being punished and that punishments aren't necessarily based off what people can or can't do by themselves. They've demonstrated that they are unable to responsibly use the chat system so that particular privilege is being taken away temporarily. Part of being a part of a community is respecting others in the community. That's something you'll have to learn eventually. You really can't go around talking shit to everyone and expecting to get off scot-free because you've gotten off in the past. People are really going to have to accept the fact that the game is now run by a modern gaming company with the modern gaming philosophy of "stop being an asshole". If I want to mute some1 I can easily to do it myself, so what's the point of the system? I'm not muted, I've never been muted, yet it still affects me because every game 2 of my teammates can only communicate by pinging the map and spamming the chat wheel. I'm highly surprised you've never been muted. The fact still remains that the people who have been muted have lost their privilege to use voice and text chat. The system has been made so they can communicate the absolute necessities if they so choose. Valve does not want to outright ban these individuals because they do not want to deal with the problem of smurfing (which sadly has arisen anyhow) from people who can't accept that they've done something wrong.
The point is that the system shouldn't punish a guy's teammates because he was a flamer in a previous game. Why should *I* be punished because i happened to get matched up with a teammate who is a flamer?

Not being flamed by the guy is seen as the lesser of two evils. The system is not punishing you by not letting you work with that guy, it's not letting you work with the guy to protect you from the fact that he's a massive cock.

A better punishment imo would be to banish him to the pit of hades the low priority queue so I don't have to play with him at all. I don't see why my play experience should be impacted by the fact that other people are being punished for flaming. It's not like I can't mute him anyways.

if they handed out lpq bans like they hand out mutes people would go apeshit lol

I think LPQ did that job just as well. If you're not an asshole, and someone else is, there is no reason why you two should be forced to play with each other to begin with. Let him hang out with the other assholes who feed, troll, and leave games.

And yet I've never been muted once..and I'm a pretty foul mouthed player sometimes (although I try to catch myself, sometimes I slip).
When people where reporting being muted left and right after the new system, I thought it was just completely broken. But as time goes on, it seems that most who gets muted really do deserve it.

yeah but they wouldn't be going apeshit in my games since they'd be stuck in the LPQ :D

Well, I'm something like 88 hours in now, and so far, it isn't nearly as bad as just reading this thread makes it sound. The only thing I can complain about is that I queue exclusively with English as my language, and only in US east and west (I'm on the west coast). Every once in a while i get queued with a 4 stack that speaks nothing but Spanish, and refuses to speak anything else. They flame me, have really loud mics, and generally are no health. It isn't that big of a deal. I am generally having fun just playing supports. Had one of my favorite games of all time last night playing bane and raping face.
Not much of a QQ, just wanted to contribute to the thread that has given me so much enjoyment so far.

Who on gods fucking earth decided that people are so fucking stupid that they can't mute people they don't want to listen to? No, it needs to be fucking babyfed with a spoon to people because they are unable of deciding for themselves who they want to mute. This whole stupid dumbass system has literally meant any hope of having any teamwork within a fucking TEAMWORK centered game is gone, and instead the only option for people is to either jungle or GTFO. It's gotten to the point where I am considering switching to League of bloody Legends, because, at least in that game, people can actually talk.
Cheers Valve.
I find the chat wheel covers most of the necessary communication. "omg noob retard team" is not one of those essential phrases.

Well this blog post confirms that, people who blame that they were mass reported by a stack and they were not in the wrong are just lying. Valve confirms that mass reports from one single game do not lead to bans or being muted, they look at several games and pattern of communication.

I really have to learn to play something other than int disablers :/
I'm sort of teaching my friend how to play dota, which is rough since I'm not that good myself, but I do my best to give advice where I can. I have him playing generally support heroes (he likes jakiro and lich) since that way we won't be relying on him to win us the game. The problem is thats the role that I generally like to play. No matter usually though, I can generally play heroes like lion or leshrac who get stronger with some farm (we lane together usually. If you see a mediocre 2 support stack, sorry about that) and who can roam and do some damage in the midgame.
Usually this isn't a problem since at our level of play most people like to play carries and/or jungle heroes so usually some disables/supports are appreciated. However the last 2 games I played we had a bunch of other people playing support/in heroes so we just did terribly.
First game our lineup was leshrac(me), jakiro (friend), kotl, lina, and lich. They had an ursa, shadow shaman lane, as well as a juggernaut so while we needed to push we got crushed reall fast (ursa with aegis ). we went 3 - 25 or something and those kills were 100% laguna blade. Not to mention that kotl felt the need to flame out entire team.
Second game we had lion (me), lina (friend), CM, invoker, and lycan. Invoker did his best to try to gank but ended up giving their SF mid basically freefarm which led to him 2 and 3 shotting us. Lina is hard and I probably should have cautioned my friend not to play her. I got caught out a few times and was basically never able to get off my ult with zeus, SF, ench, and warlock nuking us down in teamfights. To top it all off our CM went Hand of Midas into BoTs.
-_-
I'm not usually one to criticize peoples item choices, its low level AP and a lot of stuff can work, but honestly Hand of Midas and BoTs? Those were here only items at the end of the game and she seemed to know that she was playing a support role. I'm just really confused as to why someone would think that would work.
All in all, not a good day for packrat doto
Lastly for all the people complaing about being muted/reported, you were probably being an asshole and you should not do that in the future. I play a lot of solo Q, often in the role of feeding support, but if I have something bad to say about my opponents I don't generally say it in game. As a result I've never been muted, and only went to LPQ when I abandoned some games. Maybe I've just been really lucky, but I get really skeptical when I hear people complain about being muted "when I didn't even say anything".

Muting has no disciplinary aspect, he won't realize that he's being an asshole, therefore he's less likely to change his ways.

Not much of a QQ, just wanted to contribute to the thread that has given me so much enjoyment so far. There is no language option for Spanish, and from what I hear most people who live in South America get better pings to US servers because the routing is pretty poor to South American servers. Until there is a Spanish language option it is just something to deal with.

Being muted isn't going to change that either. In fact it's probably going to make it worse. Because he can't communicate he's probably either A) Going to jungle for 45 minutes until the game is over or B) Feed over and over because he has no way of communicating properly. No the chat wheel is not enough. No three pings every 60 seconds is not enough. I just got off being muted for a week. I cannot explain the amount of rage you go through when trying to get your team to group up for something. It's fucking impossible without saying it. Three pings every minute leads to a lot of shit being missed because you can't ping. It leads to a lot of games lasting 30 minutes longer because there's no "push the high ground." I've had to play axe and naix almost exclusively and just do my own thing the entire week. I've learned if you just sit in the jungle and come out at about 15 minutes and just start rolling the enemy team by yourself is the only time you won't get flamed. Any time there's a team fight and you're not stupid enough to die with your team you instantly start getting cursed at and blamed because you can't say anything. I figured I'd try to play support since I can still stun and buy wards without comms. Nope, get blamed as a treant and SD for losing. It's a terrible system. If you don't want to hear the person then mute them yourself.

Seems to me like you really hate being muted. Sounds like you should stop doing the things that get you muted. I'm sure thieves bitch about prisons all the time but that doesn't mean the prisons are doing something wrong.

Wait does being muted now prevent you from spamming pings? If so, that's super excellent. I hate ping spammers

I want to QQ about the fact that there's no spanish in the languages selection. All my games are in spanish and I dont understand spanish and I want to cry. (US east/west)

Not all of us have great restraint. When game after game after game I see people do absolutely moronic things I eventually say something. It can keep muting me, it's not going to change how I play the game. If people would stop being complete fucking morons and then defending their idiotic actions instead of manning up then I wouldn't be muted. But when you die over and over and then blame someone not in your lane or you sit in the jungle afk for 45 minutes while your team fights over and over and loses I'm going to say something. This discussion has happened like thirty times already. It boils down to people blaming each other and then reporting instead of being able to say they played bad or they fucked up. Quit defending a system that isn't working.
I've gotten many people saying they're going to commend me (and do) after I "do things that get me muted." 90% of the time I'm reported is because I say someone should do a different build, or I question their build. Then while they rage type back at me they usually die and blame me.

You get roughly three pings every 60 seconds from what I've been able to figure out.

I am an avatar of calmness and typically do not flame, except jokingly when I'm playing with a friend. I've never been muted! I went to lpq once for abandons though.
Again my main problem with the system is that if someone gets reported for flaming they should just be sent to the lpq for a while rather than forcing me to play with someone who is A) a flamer who's so bad he got muted and also B) unable to fully communicate. I don't want to play with those guys, banish them to the LPQ where they belong.

Seems to me like it's working just fine. You claim to be unable to play without being a dick, it mutes you. We're not obliged to put up with your lack of restraint, learn to control yourself.
