What games in particular? Sorry for late replay, was at school. I'm a big witcher fan, so upcoming witcher 3, also battlefield 4 and gta 5 from more current ones. I'm open for any suggestion since I'm not very into pc building, just did some quick research to come up with that. Can you share a link to the website of a local shop to see what the prices are where you are from? This is a site I managed to find in english http://www.electronics.balticmart.eu/ 1euro is 3.45Ltl. If you want cheap, you should choose the CM Hyper 212 EVO over the Xigmatek Gaia judging from the prices on that site. I think that Scythe Mine 2 for 130 Lt might be a super good deal. I don't feel good recommending one of the pricier models on that site as I feel confused about the prices. The Scythe Mugen 4 is good but uses 120mm fan size. The Thermalright HR-02 Macho Rev.A is good and quiet while strong, but I feel might be a bit too expensive on that site. The Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.B is priced well and a strong cooler, but it comes without fan (I think), and is built for 120mm fans instead of 140mm. EDIT: There are a whole bunch of other interesting old coolers that might be priced very well in that list, but I don't know how they work on current CPUs and if they come with working mounting kit. The Coolink Corator DS might be interesting. The Cogage Arrow is probably still a great cooler, might be a very good choice if the mounting kit works, though the fan that it ships with seems a little suspicious (it looks a bit ridiculously small mounted on the very large cooler). I see, thanks a lot for that, but now some people recommended not even looking into OCing and just getting locked cpu with no additional cooler to stay in reasonable budget. You reckon OCing is worth it for the extra 20% performance or however much I can achieve with it? Thanks again! I think you should think of this as a game. If you think playing around with overclocking and cooling is fun, buying the parts is not a bad choice. If overclocking sounds like a chore to you, you only do it because you want the speed, it is not a good idea. It will take quite a bit of time to read about things and experiment to get good speed and stability, and that's not good if it's not fun.
The last time I looked at this, it was a pretty fair price. The increase in speed was close to what you have to pay more for board, CPU and cooling.
Looking at it from the other direction, if you buy locked, that's also fair. You are not losing out on anything, you are saving close to the percentage of money as what you have less GHz.
It seems this was better in the past at times. You got more out of overclocking. For the current generation, this is not really the case on average.
There's also luck involved. Your CPU is unique and what voltage it needs at a certain speed is random. If you are super lucky, your CPU runs fine at close to 5 GHz at a low enough voltage, you would have gotten a very good deal. If you are unlucky, the parts allowing for overclocking are a bit of a waste. I don't remember what speed increase I looked at when I decided that the price increase is fair.

@Ropid Allright, I'm gonna read about overclocking some more tho I'm leaning towards the locked version, I'm not much of a techy unless its actually using the tech. And thanks again for all the info!

$333, add in OS for ~$100 and if you need a disc drive as well then get one in a bundle with the HDD (it'll be like a $75 combo). You could get 4GB RAM for like $40 instead and an A6 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1455182 ) as well if you want to be cheap, it depends on how cheap you want to be and what other games you want to be playing I guess since Broodwar really doesn't require much to run and both would be more than capable for the game. Something like the A10-5800k would handle a game like Borderlands 2 at 1080p on low quality at like 25 FPS (average) and the A6 will be roughly 10 FPS worse. A crappy 1080p monitor is like ~$100. So in total, about $500 or less.

Looking for 120mm fans, my budget isn't high looking for below 20 NZD. http://pricespy.co.nz/category.php?k=370 useful to look up prices for NZD. So i'm trying to look for a very cost efficient fan in terms of RPM + noise of the fan.
So far i'm considering the Artic 12 PWM 120mm ( http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=539165 )
i'll be buying 2 to 3 of these for my case
EDIT: to be specific, I only have side, rear and front areas to install the fans in. EDIT2: Scythe Slip Stream 120mm 1200rpm Looking at these as well for about 16 nzd each.

Hey thanks dude

I can't really justify spending more than a very small amount of money because I sort of uh... intentionally broke my last computer...

That means you still have that Windows product key, right? No need to buy that then, just use that key. Windows might bitch about activation. Click on that message and follow the instructions on screen if that happens.
|
So I don't need to purchase an OS?
|
If the computer is no longer in use and you have the cd-key than no you do not need to purchase Windows again.
|
Thanks very much for the prompt info.

My Hyper 212+ came. I dropped 8c under IBT (70c vs 78c) compared to my TX3. The mounting system is ridiculous and the paste was soupier than I remember.

Hey guys a couple of years ago I used to spend a lot more time on TL and eventually asked you guys to help me build the rig that I'm currently running. Unfortunately, I've been getting some bad framerate issues
What is your current build?
i5 2400 @ 3.1 GHz Radeon HD 6970 8 GB memory H67 motherboard
What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
-I want to upgrade my CPU- I think I've narrowed it down as my bottleneck, but I leave it to you guys' expertise -My framerate drops when I play games, my main game being Natural Selection 2 (fluctuates between 90fps and <10 fps). I know NS2 isn't well optimized and it puts a large load on CPU, but I get very low FPS even when I'm in 1v1 battles. Other games that are affected are Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, and Dishonored. Ideally I want to be able to play NS2 at at least 60 fps on high settings- the game is so beautiful I hate to play on low.
What is your budget?
$200 is what I'm aiming for, definitely not more that $250.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
US
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.
I usually get stuff from Newegg, it's where I got most of my parts from when I built my rig.
Let me know what you guys think! I'm open for some compromising
EDIT: I wanted to add that I'm interested in overclocking
|
The only thing you could do with that budget is get a Z68/77 motherboard and a cooler, then add 4 bins for 3.5Ghz then pump your base clock to like 105 for a grand total of 3.675Ghz. AKA it's a waste of your time and money.
|
$200 is not going to net you anything worthwhile in the CPU department and it wouldn't help in Far Cry 3 or Bioshock Infinite as both those games are quite demanding on the GPU. For just a bit above $200, you could get a 7950 which is iirc about 30% faster than the 6970. But I'm not sure of Natural Selection 2.

Didn't ns2 get big performance improvements recently?

Really? If I had 3 vista keys laying around that I didn't use anymore, I could get a windows 8 or windows 7 on 3 more computers by installing vista and then upgrading? :D
edit: ty, swell, i'll look into that

My aunt wants me to build her a computer and I can decide on what she needs pretty easily - except she wants it to be "small" and "pink" (rofl). Does anyone here know of a pink htpc or mini-atx case I could get?
|
Lian Li has some nice red cases. But if you insist on pink than I think the best solution is to buy a Lian Li and spray paint it.

heya, my pc internal hard drive died at last
im thinking of buying Seagate Expansion 1.0TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-237-SE
i could alternatively get Samsung M3 1TB USB3.0 Slimline Portable http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-154-SA
or i could get Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-255-SE&tool=3
having been a person who uses like 100gig drives in the past, i'm not worried about capacity (i was thinking 500gig until i saw how cheap 1tb drives are).
i'm also not worried about noise, because my pc is loud as fuck anyway.
so i guess i'm going for one of the external drives unless someone wants to give me a reason to get an internal.
the real question is, i will be booting, installing and maintaining operating system; using the external drive as the computers main/internal drive.
is this normal to do with an "external" drive?
i've used a 32gig usb drive with bootable version of windows to format my laptop before, but that was installing windows from the usb drive to the laptop's internal drive.
secondly, i will be wanting to take the pc's external drive (on which operating system and everything will be installed) and stick it in my laptop/take it round someone's house sometimes. will there be any problem with doing this if the drive considers itself to be a windows operating system etc drive? will i be able to just see a list of my movies etc, or will i have to reboot using the drive's operating system (and consequently log out of my laptop's operating system)?
hope this makes sense, i can clarify if needed (i rambled a bit)
