---------- It's been a few years since I really dug into speeds on an overall scale, but it used to be sequential reads and especially writes could be faster on HDDs than SSDs. That said, the vast majority of real world uses are not sequential. The difference is generally "is this many smaller files or one large file." This is the case particularly on smaller size SSD's without write caches. My 250GB 850 EVO is five times faster at sequential write than my HDD but my original SSD was the same speed as the HDD At this point SSD's with sata data limits are ~4x faster sequential read than a maintained HDD - but orders of magnitude faster for random reads. It's like 1MB/s vs 350MB/s for 4k files. | ||

![]() Thankfully the stuff linked to my HDD seems to be gone/minimized since OS reinstalling twice The sequential thing doesn't matter much since ssd's are so much faster than hdd for sequential too - just not for writes, particularly on older smaller SSD's | ||

http://www.mwave.com.au/hdds/solid-state-drives-ssd/intel so the first two options show the same series but with different capacity? 120 vs 240gb does this have anything to do with the speed or is just same speed and i can just store more stuff on the 240 one? (the read is the same but the write is slightly faster, is that a significant amount, eg: if i buy 4 of the 120 against 2 of the 240 doesnt that mean i get 10+10mb/s faster?) also how big are ur ssd? like total how much should i get as i think i want everything stored on the ssd after reading this thread. | ||

Intel SSDs are fantastic. I think they're rated as having the best lifespan since they are mainly used in servers and stuff. Storage makes a difference. The 240 works better than the 120 overall. It would be better to get 1 480 instead of 2 240 or 4 120. | ||

AFAIK it's new tech, give it time and we'll all be having them in our computers for a fair price eventually. | ||

I'm in no hurry to upgrade to such a thing though. | ||

My friend is looking to build her first gaming PC and has a budget of £500 (excluding peripherals). Preferably from a UK based site like overclockers.co.uk. Thanks! | ||

My friend will get one once Oculus Rift and other VR stuff are out. + Show Spoiler [building log] + Let's start by each components 1/ CPU + mobo + RAM: easy to work with, no issue. 2/ CPU cooler: Hyper212 may be among the best budget air coolers, but its mounting hardware SUCK.SO.HARD. The bracket cant stay in place, I got so much trouble sitting the cooler down and screw the bracket in. Wiggled a lot, so I pretty sure the thermal paste surface is fucked. Gave up after 5th times. Temperature is 36*C idle, 66*C running x264 for 20mins, room temp is 30*C, so I guess it didnt fuck it up that badly, but still mounting this is a horrible experience compared to Noctua. I know it's an unfair comparison but yeah, the point is there. 3/ PSU: Seasonic is really high standard, easy to work with, cables are of nice length, not too long that it clog the system, not too short either. 4/ Case: NZXT H440 looks kinda nice, but it's 2nd choice after Define R5. My friend wanted a white case and we cant find R5 white in-stock anywhere, so H440 it is. First thing, the pre-installed mobo stand-off seem... off. Or it's Gigabyte Gaming 3 mobo that is non-standard, but either way I didnt use all ATX mount. The position seem a bit tight, need some wiggle to get the mobo in. The back space for cable management is a little too tight, i think the sound dampening piece on the back panel will have a lot of marks for sure. Also, hard drive cage doesn't seem removable, even if it is I still need to use 1 slot so the whole thing has to stay. Some other minor issue, but not that important to fuss over. A plus point is that this one has built-in fan controller, which means it only takes a single fan header on the mobo, for lower end mobo with limited fan headers, or when someone decide to add a tons of fans. Overall I think I will take Define R5 over this all day erry day though. 5/ Drives: I mounted the HDD on top right of the cage instead of bottom. because at the bottom slot it will completely block off the bottom front case fan, due to the slot + PSU cage cover. Ssd sits nicely in front although the power supply cable is a bit tightly bent because I want to use a single sata-power cable for both ssd and the hdd mounted at top right corner. + Show Spoiler [pic] + ![]() ![]() Current problems: 1/ The bios boot time (time taken from black screen to show Gigabyte logo) is extremely slow, but inconsistent (like 3/10 times it will be super fast, almost instant, otherwise it will take 10-15 seconds for the Gigabyte logo to show up, then 2 seconds for Windows 10 login screen to show up. Fast boot is disabled due to running bootloader for ArchLinux. I did re-sit the RAM once when XMP was enabled due to system only detect 8GB of RAM, then a boot error screen showed up, with options to restore to last known good boot configuration. After disable XMP and run for a day and all is good, I enabled XMP again and no boot error anymore, except bios boot time is still super slow. Not sure if some setting is wrong or just Gigabyte thing. or may be RAM issue. ????? 2/ I got some electric shock when touching the bottom of the case, not sure if some cable is loose or something is wrong. Will try to look at the parts and re-sit them over the weekend. | ||

3000-3200 is fairly easy for Skylake but it often needs a little tweaking. XMP may or may not set some extra volts and they may or may not work; success depends on the motherboard sometimes and on the individual CPU silicon | ||

If that doesn't help, you could try underclocking your GPU a bit (reducing core clock in MSI afterburner by 100mhz and memory clock by 200mhz then hitting apply) Ok I finally got to do it but it resets to the original value when I manually write it in, should I use the slider and roughly get to those numbers? Like core clock is 810, I can slide it to 708 or 712. And memory clock is 2004, I can get it to 1802 or 1810. EDIT: Set cc to 712, mc to 1810, and csgos working again. Hope it stays that way. Thanks a lot, been trying to solve it for like a week:D | ||

Boot error doesn't happen anymore, on both stock and xmp enabled | ||

The goal is to create a PC that can play Overwatch and similar games on a 4k screen with high settings, whatever settings are required to take advantage of a 4k screen I guess. I picked out some parts, but I have no idea what to pick for a PSU or graphics card. Also, we want to keep the computer as inexpensive as possible, but while still meeting the desired level of performance to play the games and be an enjoyable user experience, similar to the retina display macs. Yes I am only putting the 250 SSD, but I believe I can add more storage as it is needed. My 2013 MBP has 250GB of storage and I still have 140 GB free. I am sure it would be different for everyone though. | ||

The regular fury is a bit weaker but available with non-reference models; the fury x has a widespread problem with cards making loud whining noises. I'd recommend a 980ti here a good 550w PSU is fine for a 6600k + 980ti. Are you intending to do CPU overclock? If so, you need 6600k and a CPU cooler; if not, it's a bit of a waste to get a $142 z107 board | ||
