A 390 would need a better PSU as the power consumption is way higher than a 380 / 970. 8GB of VRAM instead of 3.5GB is very relevant and they do seem to be performing quite well recently Could my psu handle the 970? And if I do go with the 390, what psu would you recommend?
The models that only use one 6+2 pin connector, yeah. I think that includes the Strix and some of the smaller size / lower power ones. Should be the same for 380's and 4GB 380's are still good if you want to stay at that tier.
For a 390 it's best to have a ~550w unit with 2 native 6 pin (or 6+2 pin, preferably) connectors

Hey guys, I'd have a few newbie questions regarding PC building, i basically only play SC2 and want to increase my FPS in there, since lotv seems to need more ressources than hots. I have a very small budget and want to maybe buy a new processor and nothing else, would that increase my performance at all for sc2?(i heard intel cores work better with starcraft?)
currently I'm using this old machine : http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/Kq47Lk power supply apparently was somehting bad not sure how important this will be (420w , model : LPK12-23E 3*SATA) Memory was 8 GB DDR3 not sure which company/type
and was thinking about buying: Intel Core i5 4590 4x 3.30GHz or Intel Core i5 4460 4x 3.20GHz or Intel Core i5 6500 4x 3.20GHz they seem to be all within the same price range. Any compability issues or smth?
What is your budget? 200 € What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080 What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? SC2 medium/high with 30+ FPS; decently high in teamgames What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? nothing important Do you intend to overclock? no Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? no Do you need an operating system? no Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? no If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. no What country will you be buying your parts in? germany If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. no

Not possible for 200€ because you need a new motherboard. I am in the same booth like you (AMD 1055T X6).

Ah shit, damn that sucks. Thanks dingodile

If you wanted to go 6500 it would mean new memory too cuz 6xxx does not work with ddr3

You could do a cheap upgrade like a pentium g3258 but it would be a bit of a sidegrade overall because it's a pretty crippled dual core, although a very fast one.
Platform upgrade with a good CPU (cpu+mobo to 2013 generation or buying new cpu+mobo+ram for 2015+) would cost quite a bit

When buying a new CPU, how can you tell a new PSU will be enough power? i.e. +12volt rail requires, +5 volt rail requires this much, etc...
Here is the CPU I'm getting for example: www.cpu-world.com
|
CPU's have their maximum draw listed somewhere in the spec, but it's not very high. Even overclocked the draw doesn't get particularly high. The GPU is going to be the main draw on the system.
Iirc CPU draws on the 12v rail these days.
Generally people figure out all their other parts and evaluate things afterwards. Most of the time 450w is going to be more than enough for a single GPU system.

Why are you getting an ~8 year old CPU gen for a new CPU?

Sorry, I'm posting in the wrong forum.

Hey everyone
I'm looking to build a new pc I don't have a screen but will be looking at a high res 24-27inch Really appreciate some advice I'm out of touch with the new generations of stuff last time a built a pc was with a e6600 dual core and 512 meg gfx was top of the line
computer will be used for Star craft 2 Streaming 720p+ Csgo Star Wars bg
what I want in the pc Overclocking capability 1 970 Nivida gpu not looking for sli or 980 I'm open to sli options if you think but the 980 is to $$ Intel cpu Corsair carbide air 240 case Micro atx mobo Water cooled cpu Windows os 1 small ssd and 1 storage hd
where I shop Www.Umart.com.au Www.pccasegear.com But I am fine to source the parts my self if you can't find the part you recommend there
budget $1500 Aussie dollars
Really appreciate it

with a setup like that, even with 1 GPU you won't have the airflow that would be ideal for an open air GPU. Blower is a good choice.

what determines a good case, like when looking at computer cases i just have no clue whats right for what pc. First time trying to build a pc budget: under 1200$ but i could go the extra if i really needed to something (maybe +200~) no monitor atm would have to buy one. Games: dota2, sc2, witcher 3, diablo 3 other intented uses, just normal internet browsing, and microsoft office word stuff so nothing too crazy dont wanna overclock Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? no idea what this is, i mean googling it seems like it would be nice??? thought is it expensive? Do you need an operating system? yes My monitor can be outside of my budget I dont mind about the brand thought i need things that can be shipped to or inside australia
would games in the future ever require more than 4 cores, or should i just stick with an i5 im planning on just using this computer for a really long time.
What parts should i be spending the majority of my money on, ive heard to not go too crazy with the processor and focus on the graphics card which also what the thread says.
My sister recently brought a desktop and found out that the BIOS needed to be upgrade before it could upgrade to windows 10, we called tech support and they said they couldnt do anthing about it as they dont recommended upgrading the bios or do a walk through of it casue its super risky and if it breaks they can give a refund or fix it, so we kinda have to just let it be at windows 8.1 which sucks

Features, usability, availability of stuff like spaces to mount radiators if using liquid cooling, airflow etc. Price is always a big factor, included fans are worth noting too since cases usually don't come with the optimal amount of fans and sometimes they have good fans in them, sometimes terrible fans.

Not useful unless you spend at least around double your budget

Depends on the games you want to run well and the graphics settings, resolution and FPS targets. Generally, cranking up graphics settings and resolution will highly load GPU's while just trying to maintain a high FPS at any settings will be more reliant on CPU. Sc2 won't care what graphics you have but will love faster CPU, Witcher 3 is probably more graphically limited etc.
more than 4 threads on CPU is already useful for some games, just not cost effective and it probably won't be cost effective in the near future either. At your budget, i5 is good

Okay, to fix my blank screen problem, I got a WD blue 1TB, reinstalled win 7, and installed driver 355.98 (the one before the driver that initially crashed my PC). Boots fine now, except games like csgo and the unreal 4 alpha still crash. I'm guessing GPU is screwed?

I have to use 353.30 because of various issues with the newer drivers. If that doesn't help, you could try underclocking your GPU a bit (reducing core clock in MSI afterburner by 100mhz and memory clock by 200mhz then hitting apply)

Yea they ruined a lot of stuff with the liquid redesign. I talked to several staff members and they didn't even know that there would be a visual rework until the site went down, response to feedback from them is slow. Stuff like the sig/quote text colors are still not fixed, blue posters no longer stand out, it's way less readable than the previous site was. My initial reaction was of shock and disgust (at the downgrades made with little benefit or reason) but also of hope for improvements - and by now almost all of that hope is gone.

^Skylake OC's. My CPU is exactly on the median ATM - 4.6ghz at 1.376v. Was also the 50'th to get charted, so there's a fair amount of data now.
Stock vcore is also consistently around 1.3. Turbo on default settings takes many CPU's (including mine) up to ~1.42vcore - i feel pretty safe using these voltages levels. I'm actually undervolted from stock+xmp on every important voltage.
Temps are great too - ~67-72c max (range to account for room temperature variance) while encoding on 8 threads with 1.375vcore - on air - no delid. That's about a 25c drop from 4770k in x264 while running it 12% faster at the same clock speed; it's funny to see how temperature is the biggest issue in the world until it's suddenly not a problem at all any more and nobody bothers to mention it.

As bad as this design is, it's still better than the latest one I heard at work. Can't use the colors blue, red, or green (or any variations) anywhere in the new design of something because of something to do with turmoil in Puerto Rico.
