I have the downloadable win 8 pro upgrade from when it release, (I upgraded from windows 7 home retail on my currect pc). I've been trying to google it a bit and it seems like you can make a clean windows 8.1 install from the upgrade iso but not from a windows 8 upgrade unless you do some workarounds. Anyone know how easy this is? The workaround seem not consistent from site to site, some go into the registry and change some stuff and some do some kind of reset and some of the guides doesn't specify if they are talking about the upgrade or regular install. I guess I could buy the parts and try but it would be nice to know if I'll have to count the cost of the OS into the budget. I don't need the OS anymore in the old computer.
IIRC you will need to provide win8's serial when installing 8.1 from an update iso.

i3 4150 = Haswell refresh, devil's canyon i3 4160 = old Haswell
Am I right? I couldn't find a complete and up to date list about DC processors. Trying to get an older one in order not to run into problems with H81 mobos.

Yes, but I only have the win 8 upgrade and at least according to microsoft's own website you can't make a clean install with that one. I would prefer not to have to install windows 7 and then use the upgrade to 8. If I can even find my old win7 disc.
You can perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 using installation media, such as a DVD or USB flash drive. You don't need a previous version of Windows installed on your PC to perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1, but you do for Windows 8. If your PC doesn't have a version of Windows already installed, you'll need install a previous version of Windows or buy Windows 8.1 or a System Builder version of Windows 8 at a local retailer if it's available in your country or region. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/clean-install
Will I be able to use the upgrade iso and then activate windows without too much hassle? As I said in my previous post sites seems to have different answers to this question.

Im looking for a low-end graphic card for browsing and the occasional photoshopping in the ~50€ region. Looking through amazon they're all really close in price so i can't decide for any. I've looked mainly at the nvidia gt 720, but it has 4 different versions. How important is GDDR5 over GDDR3 and 2GB over 1GB? The prices range from 50€ to 65€. Or would an even cheaper card be sufficient?

To be honest, windows 8(.1) right now is very ok in terms of OS. Obviously Windows 7 is the ''golden'' windows standard, but there are some features that aren't there in windows 7 as well as faster boot up times and increased performance on a number of games that make windows 8.1 advantageous. Also, the free upgrade to 10 is nice if you have a legal copy of the OS.

I'm not sure how far decent integrated graphics on a recent CPU would get you? In general, very budget cards are really bad and usually the advice is ''save up for a more decent one'' but considering your demands you might be better off with decent integrated graphics or indeed a low-end GPU.

Did I ask my question wrong?
I guess a more refined question might be:
How important is a stand alone hardware option for converting audio input into digital output? Is there a video/audio card that would be sufficient or if I am going to record instruments and vocals do I just need a stand alone hardware option?

Well i already have everything except for the GPU, which i took out of my old PC to replace a broken one. The mainboard doesnt have on-board graphic and has no ports for monitors.

Win7 has that same w10 upgrade. The faster boot up time is only significant if you're not fully shutting down the OS, it's a hybrid hibernation mode.
I don't think i've seen any evidence for w8 giving notably improved performance on any game over w7

I can't speak to 8, but when I did 7 from an upgrade disk it would reject your key during the installation prompt if there wasn't another windows present somewhere (it stores it when the installer starts, so you can format the drive containing windows, just don't exit the installer after formatting without having installed windows or you'll have to go install the previous version again).
Note that you can do a clean install of the new OS (taking the upgrade path is not required, you just need the old version present initially for validation purposes).
I would guess you will need to install W7 first or you'll be out of luck.

If I were a power user I'd go for Windows 7 over Windows 8. Just the v-sync on desktop on Windows 8 is enough to kill W8 for a lot of people. It's pretty much W8's only con though, the rest is really good.
W8 is slightly lighter and its UI is actually perfectly fine (especially if you use Classic Shell). It comes with AVX2 instructions "out of the box" as well, W7 requires you get SP1 upgrade to get that.
Overall I'd say both OS are equivalent, they both even have that "free" W10 upgrade. Once DX12 comes out though I'm guessing W10 takes the crown.

I made a calculation for the single parts in your list buying from an online store in Germany and the price was around 970€ without delivery costs.
So depending on the service from the shop you buy and depending on whether delivery costs are already included in your price I think it's okay.

not that great a deal imo
you could make a better rig with this thread's help (+SSD, + better psu (though i'm not sure about LDLC PSUs),+ better case)
though it's not a rip off either

is this a valid starting place for computer builds? I feel like it could help answer alot of the generic questions of this thread. http://www.logicalincrements.com

It's not useless. But it's not going to be up to date with the latest deals, and it's not necessarily going to be optimized for what you use the computer for.

You'd have a harder time picking two more functionally identical prebuilts
IDK if the first one has a reference card, or the (better) msi gaming edition 970

aren't they just the same thing with differing amounts of francais?

Hello everyone! I'm going to play the Witcher 3 and are thinking about upgrading my PC to run it a bit better if it doesn't cost too much.
My current setup: i7-2600k OC:ed a bit. GTX 570. Asus P8Z68-V PRO 8 GB ram. XFX core 650 W psu SSD, win 8.1,
I play with a 1080p monitor. I was thinking of perhaps just upgrading the graphics card and I wonder if it's worth it. FYI, I don't need to be able to max everything out, just play at a 30-60 fps on a something that's not close to the lowest settings.
I was thinking maybe a gtx 960 like this one: http://www.inet.se/produkt/5411371/evga-geforce-gtx-960-2gb-ssc-acx-2-0-cooling?utm_source=prisjakt&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=prisjakt
It costs 2200 kr but I go up to 3000 for a better card if it's worth it. I'd prefer using inet.se or komplett.se It will mostly be for playing games like witcher 3 and GTA V (and future games like deus ex and such) and it's possible I'll build a completely new pc closer to Christmas this year and move the gpu to that one if so.
Thanks for any opinions. If you think the cpu is just as limiting I might just wait until I can upgrade both.
