Damn, that ^ was amazing, thanks MisterFred ^. I'm making do with a dual core amd from about 2008 right now, but it's about time I go for a pentium g because team games lag in age of empires hd. I did have an i5 2500k @ 4.5 GHz, but I sold that pc build when I quit sc2 over a year ago (the only game I played). I remember seeing your sn around back when I was hardcore in the game.

Ok, so after seeing this:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-processor-frame-rate-performance,3427-8.html
At first glance, I'm thinking about an i3-2120 because it's $120. I'm super cheap and would just reuse my 8600gt like I did with my i5 2500k (rofl!), but I'm not sure if it'd be worth a little more to get an amd with onboard gfx?
I'm surprised how well the i3-2120 benched, and I'm thinking about an i3-3240 tonight because it's the same price and seems a tad better. @#%^, I need to stop buying stuff!

SC2 doesn't really need a powerful graphics card, and getting an AMD with onboard graphics would just hurt you because of weaker per-core CPU performance.
The i3 is inbetween the i5 & pentium. You'd think it'd perform the same as the pentium, (roughly same cores/speed), but SC2 likes L3 cache (I don't really know what L3 cache is, other than that), and the i3 has more than the pentium last I checked.

Alright so this morning the Win 8.1 install finally finished up to the first restart...only to fail to boot from HDD after with a lovely checksum error. I tried to repair disk startup errors using the installation media USB stick I had, but it didn't help.
Later the wife tried to do a full format of the HDD, which also failed. It just sat at 0% progress. So at this point I think it's safe to say the HDD is effed.
I'll be going by memory express after work to exchange the HDD for another, and hopefully things will work smoothly.

Yeah, sure. Dual-channel memory (2x2 GB) might be a bit better in terms of performance, but you'd need to replace both if you wanted an upgrade to 8 GB total.
The BL2710PT is much more expensive because the resolution is 2560x1440 instead of 1920x1080, the stand isn't a piece of junk, and the image quality and color consistency is much better. It does have higher latency and pixel transitions though.
For the rest of the build, it's fine. I'd save on Cooler Master G550M instead of the Pure Power L8 though. The G550M is better anyway, even ignoring the cost.

Thanks,I edited my post to swap it with the G550M, I guess I'll do some googling to find out what exactly some of the differences between the monitors mean.

Thanks. Yeah, I don't wanna handcuff myself with 2 sticks of 2gb of ram because the mobo only has two ram slots.

So I mentioned to Cyro that my GTX 760 was hitting ~80 degrees while playing Bioshock Infinite and he mentioned that that was rather high and that I should look into buying some fans. I have a Shinobi Bitfenix which came with only one fan. While doing some Googling, I came across this thread which suggests a good fan layout: http://www.overclock.net/t/1316075/how-should-i-set-up-my-fans-in-my-bitfenix-shinobi-case. However, I'm not so sure if it's necessary or if I'm willing to purchase a whole new four fans right away, and I don't believe 80 degrees is anything to panic about. Which fan slots should I look to fill first, and does anyone have any fan suggestions? I am not too bothered by noise as I use headphones all the time.

Main problem is just if you're hitting ~78c or so, you're locked at base clocks and you can't boost or overclock. For me, that meant 1137mhz unless i flashed the bios, while it could do 1280mhz on the default voltage, so it was a pretty significant difference.
I think it's best to fill 2x 120mm front slots and remove the pci-e slot covers under GPU to allow air to flow that way, but which fans to get in UK, i'm not sure

I would also install some sort of software such as msi afterburner in the meantime, to monitor your fan speeds (among other things). If you can see throttling, you may want to take a more aggressive curve.

I need some advice about mini itx builds. My situation is that I'm currently in the states, only having access to a somewhat crappy laptop. In the summer I will go home to Sweden and then head off the a university in Scotland in September. My desktop could certainly use some upgrades but I don't want to move a full size tower overseas.
Here is my idea: When I get home to Sweden I buy a mini itx case, strip the HDD,GPU and PSU(depending on size) from my desktop and buy an upgrade kit with a mobo, CPU and ram to spice things up a bit. Could you feasibly carry a mini itx with you in luggage or something similar?,
Also, I know some mini itx cases require special PSUs, but do you use normal mobos? The upgrade i was thinking of contains: Intel® LGA1155 Core i5-3470, Socket-LGA1155, Quad Core, 3.2Ghz, 6MB, Boxed w/fan MSI B75MA-P45, Socket-1155 Crucial DDR3 BallistiX Sport 1600Mhz 8GB KIT
Could I fit that in a Fractal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX case and have it be somewhat portable?

mITX cases requite mITX motherboards, mATX does not fit.

nwm, bad at reading

mITX boards only have one expansion slot and all manufacturers typically use the suffix I in the model number

What parts do you currently have? There's a somewhat wider variety of form factors these days supporting different components. If you don't need an extremely small build, you might be able to reuse more of the stuff.

I don't remember the desktop specs of the top of my head, the GPU is decent, the CPU kinda crap and the ram pretty good as far as I remember. The case I linked supports ATX PSUs and a mobo, CPU and that case would run me about 400 $ in Sweden which is a decent deal considering our insane hardware prices. Mostly I just want a better machine that I can still easily move overseas once or twice a year.

Node 304 doesn't support PSUs longer than 160 mm unless the graphics card is short (the length of an mITX mobo). Also no optical drive, for example.
