Might not fit here, but have nowhere else to put it...!:
I'm going to DHS in 2 weeks and am incredibly excited for it. All the way from Holland. Gonna be awesome. I'm just wondering one thing: SHould I pack my PC in a bag considering I'll be standing in a queue for an hour or maybe several and I'm going to travel up north for about 1000KM? If so, where should I look for one? I have a mid-ATX case, so it's not excessively large or small. If peripherals can be stuffed in there, that'd be extra great.
Thanks in advance.

Haha all the way from Holland? What about us North Americans T_T... Heck, in Canada we're lucky to even have a stream that doesn't buffer every 15 seconds lol.
Also, this is where gaming laptops come in handy xD.

I'd rather have a small tower for traveling 'cause "low power" desktop parts like haswell i3 (3.4-3.7ghz) / unlocked pentium paired with etc 750ti don't really use any power (and power is heat) nor do they cost very much, and on the higher end you can easily get a tiny tower, throw in a 4670k@4.5ghz and a midrange gpu, and still transport it relatively easily. If i was swapping countries every couple weeks, i'd do that - i owned two "gaming" laptops and if i was paying anything there again, i would be EXTREMELY selective of model and parts because of the various issues
|
What's the best case to transport a small build like that anyway?

Well yeah, I didn't think of that three years ago. XD
I currently have . i've had a couple people suggesting I should just use the case box, but if possible I'd use something that's a bit more sturdy. Anyone have any solutions? otherwise there might be a niche market for this!

My air 540 box was really nice, packed decently (they shipped it like that, just a box that said air 540 etc) and it only added a bit of room, for padding etc. I kept it and will probably use that if i ever move it a significant distance
My last case was bigger and harder to pick up than air540 actually - the width isn't there on normal cases, but they are often taller or longer, front to back (air 540 has psu behind motherboard instead of underneath it, and no drive bays at front) so i'm surprised how easy this cube thing is to carry around
I'm sure there are a bunch of nice ~matx cases

Hi guys.
I have a little problem. I think my mainboard is broken and I am now in a need of help when it comes to buying a new Mainboard and CPU. my current cpu is Intel® Core i5-3570K Processor.
My Budget is about 700 dollars for buying a new MB and CPU.
Goal is to stream sc2 as best as possible without having to much inteference with gameplay(streaming my own matches and tournaments)
thanks <3

Why do you think it's broken? What GPU do you have, also?
|
Cant connect to the router(tested with another pc, works great)
I get this error message : Cannot communicate with the device or resource(primary dns server), Ive tried reinstalling the drivers, updated the firmware @MB, released the IP and all that jazz, contacted the network provider, basically done everything. ( going to reinstall windows later today, as a last ditch effort)
My gpu is Gainward Gfx Titan

Wouldn't it be a lot smarter to try a PCI network card / USB wireless thingy instead of ditching the MB? :o

Given that there's no big upgrade from 3570k, seems kinda a waste to spend money just because you have a network issue. You could easily have something like that with nothing wrong with the PC on a hardware level, and if you do, then you can probably bypass it somehow

Been a couple of years since I used to contribute here, I just want to compliment the contributors to this forum for doing a great job and creating an AMAZING op. I'm looking to build a new computer after about 4 years of happiness with my last build and all of the information I need to do so is super up-to-date and readily digestible
I guess as a follow up, this is *roughly* my current build
ASUS P7P55 LX LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard Core i5 750 Processor Boxed OCZ Agility Series 2.5" 60GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) COOLER MASTER Centurion 5 CAC-T05-UW Gateway FHD2401 Black 24" 5ms HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS 500W COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus EVGA GTX460
The only game that I play right now (pretty much) is Dota 2, and I run at max settings for everything with no frame rate loss. If I'm not really planning on playing anything much more system intensive than that, is there a reason for me to even go up to a GTX760-tier video card? I had mentally budgeted for around $1500 (including windows, possibly also with a monitor) but tbh my gtx460 handled dota 2 completely fine. The only reason I'm building a new one is that my mother board seems to be failing (have to re-seat video card and ram every time I restart, sometimes hard drives don't register) and my video card might be crapping out (green and red pixels showing up on one of my monitors)

If you ever fix this please it here because I have same problem with some computers of mine.

There's no reason to get a GTX 760 for DotA 2. You can make do with a GTX 750 Ti or R7 265, which is currently around $150 or go lower to sub $120 for a 7770 or GTX 650 Ti (if you can still find them in stock). I'd budget more for the monitor(s) if you are just playing DotA 2.

Yeah, it's Computex now. Hopefully we'll have everything sorted about about Devil's Canyon now

Fair enough. I actually still really like my 24" gateway monitor that i got 4 years ago, and I rarely use my second monitor since I'm usually projecting the game onto my TV so my fiancee can watch my games at the same time. Will look into getting a new monitor though. Does that opinion change if I occasionally stream? (I assume that's more dependent on my cpu/ram) Long term I can see myself playing the last starcraft expansion, but in all likelihood Dota 2 is gonna be the last major game I play
|
Streaming drepends on CPU and upload. For streaming, I'd like to have the second monitor display settings, chat, and music. But it all just depends on your preference / usage.
|
When I stream I use my second monitor, I really only stream when my fiancee isn't home so she can watch lol

Hi guys, I'm looking into a new computer or two for my boss:
+ Show Spoiler +
I run 4 Virtual PC’s using Windows 7 64 bit OS which in turn sit on a Windows 7 64 bit host. At present I use 4 off the shelf desktops with an i5 processor and 8mb of memory (16 Virtual Pc’s). However I am pushing these a bit and I suspect that with 24/7 operation these will eventually fail.
At present they run at about 70% of memory and during operation about 70% Cpu with peaks of 90% - although 100% when each VPC boots up (in a TIMED sequence).
What I am looking for are two more desktops with more CPU power (has to be Intel – for the Virtual PC’s), more memory, better cooling, any graphics card that will support the usage (quality isn’t a priority), a 500Gb HDD is more than sufficient, DVD reader, audio not used and runs on Windows 7 Home premium OS. They will all be accessed remotely through a VNC server.
He is looking at this machine currently and their tech support has told him that they can replace its motherboard so it supports 32gb instead of 16gb ram. http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/servers/sr-0103.html
Basically he runs several instances of virtual machine on each computer and several instances of an application (like Internet Explorer) on each one, from what I gather. I would have thought any modern computer could do this no problem but it turns out to be resource hungry. I took a screenshot of one of the machines to illustrate, if this helps:
+ Show Spoiler +
As you can see, he wants to do something quite specific with the machines and has a budget of ~£700. Ideally he wants to find something that "does the job" for the cheapest price - so it's important to know what components are required and what aren't (is it memory that needs to be maxed out (he thinks so) or do we need a graphics card (he thinks not) or is it a CPU problem? or even HD?)
Thinking about it, perhaps if it is a certain component we can identify then perhaps we can just upgrade that component on the existing machines? Looking at what he wrote, maybe his existing machines all use 8g ram and that might be upgradeable...(ill email him now to find out..)
What do you think?
Thanks ever so much for reading
edit: i'm doing some quick googling about virtual machine resources and the first links seem to say that the amount of memory a virtual machine can utilise is hard limited to 3 gb ram? example . this might be out of date information...? another thing to consider is to make sure he has initially set up the virtual machines to be allocated with X memory each..(and also potentially X cpu resources each?)
