I'd buy electrical contact cleaner and use that to clean the contacts of the GPU and memory sticks. Also spray it into the contacts of the SATA data cables (and let it dry well). This might seem like a stupid suggestion because the contacts shouldn't really oxidize, but you never know. That you have to reseat things seems suspicious and the reason for that might really be something stupid like that.
About what electrical contact cleaner is and how it works, it's a liquid that's mostly alcohol (for cleaning) with additives that will leave some sort of grease as protection against air after the alcohol evaporates. If you want to try to see if it helps, a can is $5 or so.
No idea about the corruption in the graphics card's output. That really seems worrying and like something is going bad.

i can sort of affirm that SATA cables can go rusty and stop working. i thought my HD was dying until i tried a different cable and tried replugging it every so often. (hd did die a year or 2 later so i'm not 100% sure). imo you should just order a new HD cable and chances are everything will be fixed!!!
|
yea I haven't had time to fully trouble shoot everything yet. Possible it's the monitor, I have a laptop that I can plug into it to see if that's the case, could also be the cable maybe? The ram/hd/gpu issues all put together though are leading me to want to just get a new computer regardless. Rather pre-emptively switch everything over than deal with having no computer for 2-3 weeks as I wait for parts

WWDC live stream starting anytime now.

sure but if you wait 2-3 weeks plus X weeks until it all breaks then you will have a X month newer/more powerful machine :D to play broodwar on

Seems like Devil's Canyon is releasing June 10'th (unlocked pentium, i5, i7 that is 4.0ghz base, 4.4ghz turbo)
I saw 4790k using 1.28vid for 4.4 though, which says a few things; it wouldn't be maintained with the stock power limit and a 4 thread load, at least much less than 4670k/4770k; that's worse than average haswell in terms of clocks, and also that with IHS issue, that's about limits of cooling with clc/air. Don't know much stuff for certain though
|
They might be prepared to let it hit the 100 C thermal limit (is it 100 C on Haswell? I think it's 105 C on my 3570k). They could have decided to simply let it go through whatever VID table programming process they have, set everything up for up to 4.4 GHz, then sell the CPU as 4790k no matter what the VID numbers look like. I mean doing zero sorting and selection for what CPUs to sell as 4790k instead of something lower.
What would be neat is if they changed their whole VID table setup process and program all of their CPUs for stable voltage up to 4.4 GHz, including the i5 CPU. That would mean you could tell newbies to simply set 44x multiplier for "overclocking".

I just hope they can actually run @4.4 decently, and they don't pull an fx9590 and have people making threads trying to make them run at stock speeds on their h100i's (4.7ghz, 5 with one thread per module in use?)
|
If they did indeed solder it or something similar, something modest like True Spirit 120 will do it ezpz for 1.3V.

4.5@1.3 4c/4t on good temps high end air
+ Show Spoiler +
i7 is ~10c hotter at those volts with the extra threads used normally
On that note, optimization + new nvidia driver was pretty good for planetside 2, constant 60-80% cpu load on 4 core now instead of dropping to ~30% and having worse performance per % of CPU used. I've not really see a game increase performance by like 4x from launch before like that.
As for temps, if they're improved then they should be able to pull off those stock speeds not too badly, but i wouldn't expect one of those little stock coolers still, if you're planning to run at like 1.25vcore for 4c8t load without throttling. I'm mainly just looking out for if this actually changes anything vs delidded Haswell, because it seems like it might actually be worse (no better oc headroom, they might not cut temps by as much as a good delid + clu/clp) and we don't know much info til reviews go up quoting OC voltages with large samples of chips (Haswell has 5.0@1.25 4670k's, i'm sure there will be a few 4690k's like that too.. it won't mean much for normal people who don't have the best chips out there) and also comparing temps vs haswell chips on same cooling setup
Either way, i may still break out a hairdryer and a credit card for my chip. Seems better than using a hammer or a metal blade.
Also worth mentioning, i've heard some about z97 boards having worse VRM solutions than z87, especially at lower ends

Anything to be worried about if u are above the lower end you think?

Sin's VRM list has been updated now - http://sinhardware.com/images/vrmlist.png
could impact high OC's even with a "midrange" board, there was much complaining about the z97x-SOC being much less powerful than the z87x-d3h

Hello, I'm considering to transition from using my laptop for gaming to building a budget gaming desktop. Currently I play LoL, Hearthstone, and DotA 2 on low settings on my laptop hooked up to an external monitor and peripherals, but I want to change that. I've been playing LoL and Hearthstone fine, but I have to scale down DotA 2 to 1366x768 from 1920x1080 to be able to play it around 50 FPS which I don't really like to do.
Is it possible to build a desktop on a $400-$500 budget with those games on high settings these days?
+ Show Spoiler +What is your budget? $400-$500
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Primarily League of Legends, DotA 2, and Hearthstone. Preferably high settings if possible.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Basic school work, internet browsing, and watching movies and episodes.
Do you intend to overclock? No.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No.
Do you need an operating system? No.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. None.
What country will you be buying your parts in? United States.
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Amazon, Newegg, and NCIX.

They generally improved some other stuff on z97.. and cut vrm costs because they're "broadwell boards" and if broadwell actually uses 30% less power than Haswell like Intel said, then Haswell would need ~1.44x as much power. (0.7 *1.44 = 1.0)

Yea, you can make a decent setup. I might throw something together

Hey Cratonz - Geforce experience update just added official 2560x1600 support to Shadowplay, so nvenc can definately handle it. I installed Geforce Experience 2.1 though and hit start on shadowplay, and it completely broke my GPU driver and made me spend like 15 minutes restarting system and removing/reinstalling stuff to get a functional system again

Well then that just means they aren't good boards for overclocking devil's canyon then. No?
|
I'm trying to understand the problem with the i7 Devil's Canyon that you are talking about, but I just can't get it? Does the temperature increase fast as you start to overclock it.
|
i7 has hyper-threading which makes it run hotter when overclocked than an i5.

Yea, it does. Power usage approximately doubles going from ~1.1v to ~1.4v with a 20% frequency increase
they're talking about going from, for example my cpu, 3.7@1.08vcore - to ~4.4@1.3vcore potentially. That's a massive difference in power consumption (and pretty much all of that turns into heat that you have to remove from the die)
And yea, i7 does more work with hyperthreading - but that increases temperatures too. Typically 8-12c, less or more in extreme cases (60c to 68c would be normal, but 80 to 92 also would be)
Intel hasn't returned to fluxless solder with Devil's Canyon. Instead, it has employed a "next-generation" polymer interface material that's supposed to transfer heat more efficiently. Intel desktop CPU head Lisa Graff told us the polymer TIM was the best option for getting a product to market quickly, since switching to solder would have involved an interruption in manufacturing. (And you never stop a fab at Intel if you want to keep your job.) I suspect the polymer TIM may also be cheaper than solder, but that's just speculation.

Looks like some z87 will support them

hey fellas =)
my first post/first setup: + Show Spoiler +On May 28 2014 20:11 promoe wrote: Hello everyone! =) im from germany and im planning on getting a new pc. as this is my first pc (had a mac before) i don't have the best knowledge about the single parts. but i already read around the internet and looked up some reviews on some stuff etc.
i'm asking for your advice/critics on my so far "selfbuild" computer.
i really appreciate any time you guys take to help me!
What is your budget?
800-900€, although i kinda want to keep it around ~800€ as i need to get a monitor and maybe a keyboard in addition to that.
What is your monitor's native resolution?
as this is my first windows pc i dont have one. but i'm planning on getting one 21"-24" monitor (depending on prices) and a second smaller monitor (like 19" or something).
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
games like league of legends, diablo 3, counter-strike go(these i play at the moment). no need for max graphic settings. i just want the games(and possible future games) to run on medium to good settings perfectly.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
it's primarily gaming. besides that watching some movies, youtube n stuff ^^ maybe some photoshop-stuff aswell (but thats not really a necessaty to run photoshop-stuff as fast as possible, as long as it works im fine with it taking a bit longer)
Do you intend to overclock?
i talked with a friend and he suggested me a processor which can be overclocked (which makes a i5 to run as fast as a i7). but as im no pc pro it rather happens in the future after i read myself into how it works etc. or i might ask a friend for help. but basically yes i've planned to.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
not sure about this, because i have no idea if i need to. and i dont know yet what specific size of a monitor i will get.
maybe an advice from somebody?
Do you need an operating system?
nope.
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
i need monitors but this is not in the budget named above. i kinda wanna have some more space to work with.
if any1 can recommend me a good monitor i'd really appreciate it as i feel experience matters alot when it comes to monitors.
budget for the first monitor would be like 120-160€ (21"-24") budget for the second monitor would be up to 100€ (19" or maybe even smaller as its just for being able to watch streams/episodes/youtube videos on it while playing on the main monitor)
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
i kinda want a "silent" pc, that's why i chose the cooler. but if it gets too expensive this can be ignored.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
Germany
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
i built the one im showing you below on ibuypower.de but i also tried out ultraforce.de but i like ibuypower so far but i don't really care about any specific one.
my setup so far: (-> at ibuypower.de: ~840€)
Case 1 x NZXT Source 220 Mid-Tower Gaming Case w/ USB 3.0 Black- (just went by the looks here, and i like a relativly small case)

Processorcooler 1 x Be Quiet Dark Rock 3-
Memory 1 x 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3/1866mhz storage module (Kingston HyperX Genesis with Heat Spreader)-
Graphic card 1 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti - 2GB-
Motherboard 1 x Asus Z87-K-
Powersupply/adapter 1 x 600W Corsair CX600 80+
Main-Harddrive 1 x 120GB Kingston SSDNow V300 -- Read: 450MB/s, Write: 450MB/s-Single Drive
File-harddrive 1 x 1TB SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD-Single Drive
Optical Drive 1 x 24X Double Layer Dual Format DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Drive-
Soundcard 1 x 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard-
Network adapter 1 x Onboard LAN Network (10/100/1000)-
again i appreciate any help/advice i can get! thank you for your time.
cheers! =)
with your help and some research i came down to this:
http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/tq2gzy
anything to add/recommend? maybe some cheaper case? is everything compatible? (especially the case)
im mainly concerned about the parts themselves, not so much the prizes. so im going to compare prizes with geizhals.de and see if i can get some parts a bit cheaper after im certain which parts i want.
edit: and what about Sound Cards, Wired Network Adapters, Wireless Network Adapters? are there any good ones? or is it just: get the cheapest?
