For 7970's, i think you should expect like 200-275w per card depending on clock (non-ghz edition at stock vs oc)

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230600 All I really want a laptop for is to connect it through HDMI to my HDTV to watch video streams and to use basic programs like ms office. I need a laptop rather than tablet because I need the keyboard. By video streams I mean netflix, nhl centre ice, sc2 streams, etc. I already have a gaming pc.

If I add another card on PC Part picker I goes to almost 679W. So based on that estimate would 750W be the way to go with the probability that I want to OC CPU and GPUs a little bit. Not to extreme levels but I want to do it for the experience to know how. If I get two cards what should I look at for GPU memory on them? Like the one I picked was 3GB but if there was a 2GB model that was cheaper and I got 2 of them I'd save money. Unless there's some reason I'd want 6GB of GPU memory.

Because of this, you can't add it up to 6GB, it still stays as 3GB. OHHHHHHHHHH well shit. Didn't know that lol. So if I get two, may as well stick with the 3GB ones. Are there any NVidia cards I should consider that are in the same price range and may be better?

Unless there's some reason I'd want 6GB of GPU memory. PCpartpicker almost certainly uses something like TDP to calculate power usage, and this isn't very useful at all. The gtx770 for example has a 230w tdp (because it uses it as a power limit) but only actually draws like 160w in many full load applications (very rare to see it anywhere near 200) Are there any NVidia cards I should consider that are in the same price range and may be better? 770 perhaps. I'd consider it to be a better card than the 7970, particularly if you want to use two (they're much more efficient, less power use less heat) but they're usually more expensive, plus going for 4gb VRAM over 2gb costs a ton on them, and you might want over 2gb if you have two cards if it's ever a goal for you to use MSAA on 2560x1440 resolution or something far above 1920x1080. Newer games might use more VRAM, and give trouble with msaa even on 1920x1080, but i don't think there'll be too many problems with 2gb vram on 1920x1080 in general especially if you keep AA down, because i didn't come close to it in any game i tried with graphical settings appropriate for ~80-100fpsI got one regardless of 2gb vram "weakness" because i plan (with one or two) to target something like 150+fps (with high refresh rate screen) on 1920x1080 with some settings turned down as opposed to a way lower fps with 2560x1440 maxed and 4x msaa. When i put it like that it seems a bit silly even to me though, i will admit

Overall i don't really think a build from scratch that can "maybe" sli or "maybe" overclock is a good idea, because for two gpu's you'd want a different psu, more VRAM to scale with the strengh of the gpu's and maybe even a different case, like OC potential on CPU, you end up paying for something you'll either use or not

This is something I may follow-up on. Both times I've gone Seasonic (620HX and SS-660XP), I've had to deal with coil whine. Fortunately my RMA for the SS-660XP came back dead-silent and completely free of electrical noise, but I would prefer not to take that risk in the future. Obviously won't be replacing my PSU until another 4-5 years pass, but if Corsair can push the PSU market to take coil whine/electrical noise far more seriously, I'm all for it.

So here is the newest tweak to the build I've been working on: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1D8Du Can I safely OC CPU and GPU with the current parts listed? Should I up the PSU to 500W to make sure I'm ok when I OC?

Ok so one GPU which is fine, it means I can sink more into a super high end one. Maybe a titan or something. Titan would be very silly, with the stock bios's (people usually don't flash them unless they're pretty advanced overclockers) it doesn't even pull away from a good 780 model, it even loses in some cases, but it costs like 50% more I'd swap to a z87x-d3h on mobo, but it doesn't really matter that much. Yea that's good for OC build, capstone 450 good for single 770 and probably 7970/780. You could get a 780 if you wanted to upgrade, but there's no good reason to do it IMO for 1920x1080 60hz On September 13 2013 12:42 mav451 wrote: http://www.corsair.com/en/blog/there-is-more-to-psu-noise-than-fan-noise-how-we-fight-coil-whine-in-the-rm-series-power-supplies/ This is something I may follow-up on. I get what seems like PSU noise (whining) when playing Osu and only Osu. It's loud enough to be heard from outside of the room and changes pitch(?) when the framerate of the game changes, which is really annoying

I think 7970 is worse at stock but like the same or better if you push it hard and have the right model, so it's pretty hard to justify +$100 for 770 4gb

Thanks again Cyro and everyone else in this thread for helping answer my silly questions and give advice. I will be purchasing my parts soon! ![]()
