Then what's the point of even verifying anyway?

Your old PC was so old that it was still using "IDE" commands to talk to the HDD. Your new board is configured to use "AHCI" instead. Windows won't boot without switching the drivers over first. To do that, you can change something in the Windows registry. So what you can do is the following: (1) Go into the BIOS and search for where you can choose between "IDE" (maybe called "Legacy") and "AHCI" for your SATA ports. Switch it over to IDE. (2) Windows will now be able to boot. Google for how to do the required registry change: "ide ahci windows 7 registry". (3) Change the stuff in the registry and restart and go into the BIOS and switch the SATA ports back over to AHCI. If you get into Windows by using IDE instead of AHCI in the BIOS, you might want to google about how you'll find out your Windows product key, then write that down. Do this before you play around with the registry and possibly break your Windows installation.

I found my key, I actually had written it down. I went ahead with a clean install, runs great.

I'm probably going to buy a new computer sometime soon as I'm only on a laptop right now and I want something with a bit more power again. When this "soon" is going to be isn't really decided yet and I'm somewhat flexible in that regard. Neither is the "what I'm looking for" decided yet. Anyways question being: Is there anything to look out for pricewise when I consider buying something? It's not going to be super high-end stuff so maybe waiting for some new releases that will make the prizes drop would be a thing because as I said I'm somewhat flexible in that regard? Is there anything like that up in the future? Does it make a difference at all or are prices dropping gradually anyways? It's basicly that I don't want to be the guy who buys some game on steam for fullprize just to realize it's off by 50% the next day because of steam summer sales. Just with computerparts really ![]()

There's not really much with desktop CPUs to consider for over a year. There should be very slightly faster versions of the same thing later this year. CPU prices don't tend to drop really, at least these days for things worth buying. All other technologies are somewhat or fairly mature (or rather, don't drop in price that much and there isn't much rapid development or significant new features or anything). I guess SSD prices are still dropping overall, but not so much as before.

The PSU has a very large connector for the motherboard (24-pin), and a second 8-pin or 4-pin connector for the CPU power. The front panel of the case also has a bunch of tiny connectors that have to go into the motherboard. Regarding that, what's important is not USB and audio, but the connectors for the LEDs and power and reset button. The LEDs can be be plugged in the wrong way, so you have to look what side of the connector is (+) and what is (-). The colorful wire is positive, the black wire is negative. You have to look at the manual of the board most likely. It's very hard to see what's going on just by looking at the motherboard.

You can still use Windows indefinitely though, right? So basically you get W8 without the service packs, without a desktop background and without the annoying reminder. Don't they ever realize that someone is just using W8 for free without caring about the inconveniences?
