Also is there anything good about getting 2 4Gb RAM sticks rather than 1 8Gb RAM stick? The 2x4 is more expensive than the 1x8, which leaves me pondering. I'll probably stick with the cheaper solution.
I think if your motherboard is dual-channel (which it looks like it is), then having 2x4 is better because apparently the CPU won't be bottlenecked by the memory.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-channel_memory_architecture#Dual-channel_architecture
I would check the bus speed of the i5 4670 and compare that with the memory speed you have.
Also, your build is cheaper than mine, but the difference lies in the SSD. It's ultra fast. I don't use more than 250 GB of hard drive space (if I do, then I just delete things), but if you're recording it makes more sense to have larger capacity at a cheaper price.
|
Intel doesn't use a bus anymore.
|
Is it still worth getting the 2x4 GB ram sticks like you suggested then?
|
2x4GB is still suggested.
|
I'm fine I don't need wireless, my internet comes through a plug in the wall. I looked around and found 8Gb of RAM in 2x4 at a lower price than what I was at before.
As for the extra HDD, well, it's something that can be added later so I'll just leave it be at the one I'm using right now. I already have the hard drive i'm going to use on my desk, heheh
Current build and probably the final one: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1BRtk price: 674€ Thanks for the tips review up til now! I saved money and probably streamlined my rig as well
edit: yeah i've heard great things about the SSD thing is that shit is waaaaaaaaaay expensive. maybe i'll get one at later point, but as of now i'll stick to the hard drive

What is your budget? Upto about 1k, but not that important
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1280, still have to find a second monitor which will probably run 1640x1028
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Pretty much all sorts of (indie) games on steam. High settings would be nice. It has to be able to run games smoothly in a few years.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Bit of video watching, browsing, etc.
Do you intend to overclock? If I can figure out a fool-proof method.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? From what I heard this isn't that good nowadays?
Do you need an operating system? Nope
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Perhaps would need another monitor. This is on a separate budget.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
What country will you be buying your parts in? Netherlands
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. http://www.alternate.nl/html/index.html Might try to find the parts cheaper somewhere else.
I put together a build already, but I'm not too sure about this. Might be nice to lower the price a bit:
3D Gigabyte GV-R797OC-3GD 329,- + FC3 Intel i5 4670K boxed: 219,90 + Grid2 (game) Crucial 2.5" M500 240GB 139,90 Mobo Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3: 107,90 Kast Corsair Carbide 300R 74,90 Voeding Seasonic M12II 520W 72,90 DDR Crucial Ballistix Tactical 51,90
Main concerns: Is this PSU/SSD any good? Possibly can lower the graphics card a bit, but not sure how much performance I'd lose.
As for the monitor, I really don't know and usually am not very nitpicky about it. Was looking at this: LG IPS237L black 179,90
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

fruit sticks
i have a last question
the card i'm getting is the ASUS GTX 760. my goal is to hook it up to the motherboard MSI B85M-P33
http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX760DC2OC2GD5/
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B85M-P33.html#?div=Detail
The ASUS graphics card uses PCI Express 3.0.
So if on motherboard specficiations i see:
Slots
• 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slot • 1 x PCIe 2.0 x1 slot
that means that the first slot can accommodate my graphics card, correct? what does x16 slot mean, i read it had something to do with speed but i couldn't find a better answer?
we agree that this card should be compatible with this motherboard, correct?

http://rwlabs.com/images/articles/msi/Z87_G45/11.JPG <-- do you see how the shiny golden contacts end at half the length of the large PCIe slots on the lower two? Those are x8 slots. The x16 at the top has the contacts go the full length until the end. All the tiny slots are x1.
You can actually put the graphics card wherever you like. It will also work in an x8 slot, just won't have its full bandwidth for that connection. You can also put a PCIe 3.0 card into a PCIe 2.0 slot.

OK, so this motherboard
http://www.msi.com/product/mb/B85M-P33.html#?div=Detail
seems to have 2 slots. i can put the ASUS GTX760 into either one of them
but it also says on the asus page: To have the best cooling performance, ASUS GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5 extends the fansink to 2 slots. Please double check you Chassis and Motherboard dimension prior to purchase to make sure it fits in your system!
however if i look at its picture: http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX760DC2OC2GD5/#gallery
it seems to only have ONE slot that can fit into a port
they ask for two because the card seems to be really think, am i right?
edit: it seems that the two black slots on the MSI motherboard are for RAM
the big blue slot on the MSI motherboard is for the video card. since its only sized micro ATX, it can only house one video card. that makes sense. but i think that the ASUS GTX 760 is therefore too big for the motherboard. so i should probably get a Gigabyte GTX 760 instead, which is apparently only one slot wide

sorry i edited :p
actually i think the ASUS might fit. i wish i could check before buying anything damn it

The tiny black colored slot on the picture of your motherboard is actually slot number 3. There is no slot 2. It would have been where you see the battery. The tiny slot will stay available for a sound card or something even if you put the fat graphics card into the large blue slot.

after thinking about it i think you're right
so the ASUS GTX 760 can physically fit on this motherboard and it'll use the blue slot which is the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot. it'll be compatible and it will also work without either component bottlenecking the other
thank you very much for your (very fast) answers. as i said before, this is my first time so i need to learn all the ropes ^^

What is your current build? m3970am-HP (Angelica2) - Motherboard
amd fx-6120 - CPU
10GB of RAM 1600 ddr3
radeon hd 7450
1 TB of storage
A mid sized ATX Case
Internal 300W power supply
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1366x768
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? I just want to upgrade the power supply as well as the GPU. I want to achieve smoother game play.
What is your budget? $400
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. Amazon or newegg I suppose.
I am helping my friend out who just wants to upgrade his computer a little bit. I'm not familiar with AMD builds so that's why I'm asking for some guidance. For a graphics card I'm not sure what is good with his setup, but he's wondering if Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 would work at all with his build. And the power supply shouldn't be too difficult. I assume I'll only need a little more than a 500w or so power supply?

In what game/s?

LoL, Wildstart online ( when it comes out ), WoW, Day Z. and i'm assuming future games as well. I don't think he expects to play them on ultra settings and stuff, but just enough to get by comfortably

I'm not sure if this is the correct thread to be posting this in, but about 2 weeks ago I purchased parts. A lot of thanks to skyR for helping me pick the parts. It made the process much more enjoyable having confidence in the build. I built the PC over the weekend and everything went smooth up until post and getting into BIOS. An error screen came up saying, "Reboot and select proper boot device." I tried rechecking all my wiring, re-attaching my cables going to my HDD and SSD. Same error screen. At the same time as this I was making a bootable Windows 8 thumb drive on my laptop. When that finished I gave it a go with the thumb drive in the USB. It worked and went through to the Windows install screen. After installing it went to the personalize and finishing touches screen and now my mouse and keyboard don't work. So, I can't move past that screen to the desktop. I have gone into BIOS and done googling to see if I could find if there is information on this or a similar problem, but I can't figure it out. Could someone please direct me in the right direction or give me advice if you have an idea of what is wrong. Thanks. Pictures to come once I get it up and running.

What did you install windows on?
You probably had to just go into the bios and set ssd to #1 boot priority. It can be tricky to do
|
I installed Windows to the SSD, Set the boot sequence to be the thumb drive first and when windows was installed set it back to the SSD. It keeps getting to the same spot, which is the personalize color scheme and name, and my mouse and keyboard don't work. Works in the UEFI as well as during the install.
