Hey TL,
I'm getting a new laptop soon and I have 2 choices both at similar price ranges.
1st: ASUS A53S
CPU: Core i5-2410M (Sandy birdge) 2.3ghz
GPU: Geforce 540m 1GB
Storage: 500GB HDD 7200rpm
Windows 7- Home Premium 64bit
Screen Size: 15.6inches
Resolution: 1366x768
2nd: Dell Studio XPS 16
CPU: Core i5-2410M (Sandy birdge) 2.3ghz
GPU: ATI 4670 1GB
Storage: 720GB HDD 7200rpm
Windows 7- Home Premium 64bit
Resolution: 1080p
Both choices are close, but the ASUS has a much better graphics card which can run direct X 9 games at high smoothly and most Direct X 11 games at medium. The thing is the Dell Studio has a sleeker look, and a 16inch 1080p screen. The card for it is not as good as the 540 but its still decent. The thing is I have never had any experience with ASUS laptops, whats your take on them? I'm leaning towards the ASUS but I just want to make sure I make the correct purchase.

Personal experience: Asus laptops have terrible build quality. Old laptop spent 6 months inside a laptop bag experiencing normal wear and tear. No significant or noticeable drops/bumps/dents. Open it up one day and it won't boot, there's a big nasty crack running along the left side of the keyboard, phsyical damage to the motherboard, it's a writeoff.

I personally have never owned an ASUS (I have a Dell lol), but my roommate owns one and says he won't be buying any other brand.
If I was given the choice between those two laptops, I would probably go with the ASUS as well. The better graphics card would be the deal sealer.

I've read most of critics on ASUS laptops to be good, same with Dell's.
In this case I'd stick with the ASUS (though I don't know how it looks, not that it makes a huge difference, but the keyboard layout matters a lot to me)

My experience with Asus has been fine. My old Asus laptop pretty much survived a trip on a motorbike exposed to terrible weather (a lot of rain and such). The whole thing was pretty wet when I arrived at my destination, but still worked fine. When the heat sensor finally decided to go whacky a few months later, their repair center that happens to be next door to where I live replaced the motherboard no problem. Its keyboard died when I spilled a beer over it, but I don't think that's entirely unreasonable.
Disclaimer: I actually recently applied for a job at the repair center recently so my opinion might be slightly biased.

Personal expericnce makes me shy away from asus but I have no idea about that model Just make sure if you go with the asus that you read all the lit it comes with. Mine came with a 1 year free accidentaly dmg warrenty that had to be activated in the first 60 days. I didn't know this untill I had problems and it was to late.
Just do research and look for reviews from different sources.

I vote ASUS. My friend has that model and its quite good. With respect to build quality, as long as you respect your computer and you're not throwing it around, then it'll last forever. I empathize wonderwalls experience but my asus has lasted me 2 years already and thats while treating it relatively roughly running between classes and stuff.
The thing with the recent dell laptops is their design. Not in terms of looks but the little quirks. You'll often open up your screen with keyboard marks all over the plastic. Although this is common in most laptops, my friends dell once takes it up the ass especially hard.
Running coretemp, on idle and load, my ASUS and my friends ASUS were 15 degrees lower. Opening up the dell to swap the thermal paste was retarded how they just stuffed everything in there, it's no wonder it's overheating. The bottom screw tension was so high simply because they were pushing the components inward.

Yeah will from the reviews I read, most people praise it. I'm still unsure, that 1080p screen on the Dell is giving me doubts.. XD

ASUS laptops tend to last longer and have a higher build quality than your average laptops. I never had experience with Dell laptops, but either way, I don't think you will go wrong with either brand of laptops. Personally, I would go with ASUS laptops, as they have a reputation for being more reliable.

Personal experience: I had serious problems with a new ASUS K52 series laptop a few months ago, which ended up with a money-back resolution after months of bureocratic hassle - apparently a significant part of the series had factory defects.
ASUS makes really great-looking laptops with great performance, but since their quality control couldn't stop such a faulty series from production, I will have trouble trusting them ever again.

Are you buying the Dell used or something? Because I'm pretty sure they don't sell that model in the picture anymore.
That Asus looks really nice, but for me personally, the low res screen would be a dealbreaker. 1080p screen is awesome.
I guess it depends how important the screen is and what kind of games you'll be playing, and whether or not the Dell can run those.

I own both a Dell and an ASUS, so here are my opinions on both! My input will be completely unbased on computer specs. My Dell is the E6510 and the ASUS is a G73. If I were to rate them based on specs my ASUS would be like 4x the computer my Dell is hahah.
ASUS: It's hard to tell from the picture, by my ASUS has like a matte kind of finish...like you know the rubber grippy stuff they put on handles sometimes? Mine has something similar, and it's nice and comfy. It also doesn't get hot in the hand areas, my dell does, and I never have nasty sweaty wrist problems.
The one "bad" thing about the ASUS is that the keyboard is laid out differently than most people are used to - unless they come from a MAC - but the chic keyboard is awesome. Very sturdy, and the buttons are really responsive. The hinges for the screen are a little tight, but they haven't worn down yet, so I can put my screen at any angle I want, and it won't bounce or jiggle around, it'll stay right where I leave it.
I'm not sure if it's just my ASUS, but the connectors are in kind of odd spots - like the VGA port, the headphone port, power connector...that sort of thing. I think it's a bit of the design of my laptop, which is meant to be a very powerful gaming laptop...and more like a portable desktop than a laptop. Or you'll melt your nutsack off.
Also, their warranty is amazing.
Dell: Dell is also a great brand that I have little to no issues with. However the keyboard on this is your standard laptop keyboard, and I don't feel like it's as sturdy as the ASUS keyboard is. The buttons feel more loose, and personally I don't like that kind of feel. The hinges wore out on mine pretty quick, however it looks like your Dell has the hinge on the sides instead of the center, so you're not likely to have the problem.
The thing I hate the MOST about the Dell is that the touchpad area gets hot, and I do a lot of programming on this thing...when I type my wrists get sweaty and it makes me rage. Then the laptop gets all icky looking and aksaldghaklaf. Also the touchpad is a lot smaller compared to ASUS. Though to be honest ASUS makes bigger ones and the Dell is normal sized. :p
My personal recommendation is ASUS as a brand over Dell as a brand, HOWEVER what you're trying to decide between is like...trying to decide if you put your pants on first or your shirt. You're going to be dressed either way - you're going to end up with a great laptop either way...I've had amazing support from both companies, but it's just the sturdier build quality of ASUS that gives them the edge over Dell. But a very, very minor one.
Personally, based on the two laptops, I'd also take the ASUS just because of the better GFX card. Unless you're a big movie watcher or something...I dunno, it's tough. I feel like the better overall performance outweighs the 1080p.

I have a dell XPS Studio 15 same quality screen and it's beautiful, but all studies of RMA cases says that Asus makes better quality laptops than Dell.
On the other hand Dell is the company which has the best service. You can fairly cheap get full service very easily, so if something would happen (and given the studies i've seen, there's a 20% chance of you needing RMA).
IMO it depends of how much you are gaming and what you game. If you maybe spend 1-2 hours of SC2 every day and the rest is old games buy the Dell. If you spend more than 2 hours a day gaming and want to play the newest games, go after the ASUS. No doubt, you can't upgrade a laptop and given that you are not getting the money on a real gaming laptop, you'll want to have it last the longest with the current HW..

Dell customer service is actually just atrocious. I would highly recommend the Asus on brand-name alone for two reasons: my friend has had an Asus for almost four years and it still works reasonably well; and I had a Dell for about a month and a half, it broke, and Dell customer service, besides being totally unhelpful, refused to honor its warranty.

I have an ASUS U43JC (the ones with wooden panels on them that came out last year), and it's great. It arrived with a defective LCD panel (weird discoloration along a vertical 1 inch strip), but after one phone call and one email, they replaced it (and paid all shipping charges) within a week or two, and it's been awesome ever since.
On the other hand, I have witnessed my parents going through all sorts of horror-show experiences trying to get Dell customer support to fix anything.

From my own personal experience of owning two ASUS computers they do have a tendency to break down after two years whereas my other two laptops (Acer and Mac) are still doing fine ever since I brought them five and three years ago. If you do end up buying an ASUS just make sure you back the fuck up.

I love my ASUS laptop. It's the second one I've had. The First one lasted about three years and I abused the shit out of it.

A) I didn't know you could still buy a 16 inch XPS
B) I'll assume that means you're buying used, so make sure the warranty is still valid, otherwise it doesn't matter which company has a better support system
C) I personally run an XPS17, I couldn't say a bad thing about it

- Shit customer service
- Laptop lasted for a year before breaking down
- Treated it a slight bit roughly, no damage
ASUS
- My laptop runs just like a desktop ~<3
- Good customer service
- Going strong after a year
- Treated this thing pretty badly and the only damage it's gotten was a few scratches on the cover.

I own a Dell laptop and its performance is pretty good! Still runs great! Same with my friend's ASUS. However, I know people who own both Dell and ASUS laptops and just completely rage at the build quality. I guess there will always be those laptops that just are not up to snuff.
In terms of which one, if they are both so similarily priced, go with the ASUS. Don't worry about the build quality of either one (since you're not buying Acer rofl XD). Just go with the specs. Personally, my Dell can only run SC2 on low quality (yay...T.T) and I'm gonna get that new Lenovo Thinkpad/Tablet X220 (I think) when Windows 8 comes out! Guess it's just low quality SC2 graphics for another couple of years.

I've had a mid-range ASUS (cost $1000) for about 2 years now, still runs great and I can still play new games, albeit on lower settings. Feels like a quality machine, compared to my old Sharp laptop.
Also I've literally never heard anything good of Dell computers, generally the opinion I get is that they're crappy computers.

Yeah, I've heard a few bad things about ASUS computers, but I'm inclined to recommend it over Dell. Not only are their laptops very good in general, Dell is pretty crappy in my experience.

I have an ASUS G50vt laptop and I am quite happy with it. Only problem I had with so far is overheating. After a good cleaning by screwing the laptop open and removing all the dust, it worked perfectly.

I just bought a small asus laptop (1215b) and I'm kind of disappointed.
The space key is terrible, you have to hit the upper center of the key, which I manage like half of the time. The material on the mouse pad makes it hard to use and the mouse key makes way too much noise. The finishing is a smudge-magnet, after a few days it looks like it's been used for years. It came with tonnes of bloatware installed, I think I got rid of most of it by now though. The usb and lan ports doesn't fit properly, you have to push the chord hard and its not clear wheather or not its in place. The hard drive makes annoying noises. It promises 1080p movies, but in reality there is a slight lag (might be due to bloatware). It's heavier than it looks.
On the plus side, the computer is fast for such a small machine, the screen looks really good viewing a high resolution for a 12.1''. The battery life is amazing.
I'm not so disappointed as it might sound, getting a dell with similar specs would have cost about twice the money. Just make sure the build quality is good before you buy.

The reason they still sell that Dell model here is cuz its under Dell Middle East area which is still selling older models but with newer hardware. But from the looks of it the ASUS seems a lot better.

not even counting how you want to stream games, high is just impossible. The cooling system of non-macbook laptop are so bad to run heavy application. I remember how thegunrun even have to land his laptop sideway to make sure all the heat going through the fan is going up while maintaining the TSL sever.
Dell is always cheaper if you are looking for a heavy machine that you can mess around with in computer science major and break it after a year. Asus is a safer choice in term of long warranty but the laptop designed for non gaming laptops is relatively small and compact which is bad for i7 and above where it needs a tons of spaces for cooling. You will end up never be able to run the laptop to its full potential unless you use screw drivers take out the plastic cover and battery or run it in your fridge.

1st off both machines have i5s, not i7s so there isn't as much power consumption or heat generated.
2nd obviously I would never runs SC2 on high on this thing, max thing I would wanna get it on is Medium. But running other current games on high for 30fps is pretty solid for me.
3rd I don't have money for a macbook and I'm going to be moving around a lot so I need the laptop on the go. Both of those laptops I listed are a mere 800bucks.

GET AN ASUS....I have one but the warranty that comes with it (no cost) is out of this world...I accidently short circuted my motherboard, I took it to the repair centre and they fixed it in TWO i repeat TWO days....effing amazing, im only buying asus from now on, and my laptop is still after 1year and a half running like a beast

I don't understand why most of the people are dissing dell, mob mentality maybe??
I've used many performance including HP's envy series and Asus K52's, and they get notoriously hot which in no way you can use it without a cooing pad.
Now, I'm using dell xps 17 (l702x), aside from its performance and price, there's no "hot spot" on the laptop where it gets hot when you are playing games or running heavy codes. SC2 runs at ~40FPS on high setting, where cpu temp around 50C and GPU temp around 60~80C.
For the heat issue, many laptop's hard drives are located under the palm rest area. Just take the HDD out and replace SSD, and use the hard drive as an external one. Yes, a bit costly, but it's worth the expense.

I've got almost the same experience as you, Dell first then an Asus. I can attest to the same pros/cons.

my friend's asus is somehow functioning after a year so far of constant abuse, he gets drunk and hits it, and somehow manages to play some games as well [i5 from last year, 6gb ram, 1gb nvidia, 500gb hd]

Unless you want to be carrying around a gargantuan laptop that might as well be a desktop (with less than the power of a desktop mind you), you might as well go to Sager.
What's Sager you might ask? Well, just google, Asus vs Sager and watch as hordes of fanboys rip Asus apart Of course there will be some siding with Asus as they are a great company but sager, great. I own one, an dI do not regret it.
NP8130, newer graphics card, better speakres, etc.
