IIRC, Unicomp will sell you a bag of blank black keys with your keyboard for something like $25 or so (and maybe some other colours too) - email them for availability. That way you can replace the keycaps, pull off the ugly blue Unicomp numlock sticker and you've got yourself a poor man's Otaku! Making black keys with white lettering uses a different dying process from the normal keys that Unicomp/IBM use, so your best bet for one of those is probably to trawl eBay and the like for one of the old IBM models that were made like that in the first place. | ||

The black Cherry MX keys are very lively (they give quite a feedback), they feel just a tiny bit heavier, but they feel great and robust, and give you the sensation that you can really abuse the keyboard and it will never fall apart. It does sound a bit louder than a rubber dome keyboard. I can surely understand how the cherry browns might be better for typing, because of the feedback you get when the switch is actuated - the blacks need to be bottomed out so you can be sure the switch was pressed, which makes them ideal for button mashers. Overall great feel. | ||

Build quality of filco , blackwidow etc is nothing compared to these IBM style boards. If you mean in pure durability maybe, but I own both a unicomp model m copy, a real model m and a filco with browns and the filco is far and away the best keyboard in terms of quality. | ||

Steelseries 6gv2: good, but I didn't like the feel of black switches for every day typing and the ANSI layout was UK instead of US. Blackwidow: also good although I didn't like the layout and the addition of macro keys that I would never use. I love the feel of blue switches, but my wife didn't like the sound. >_< Filco majestouch w/ browns: perfect. Right layout and brown switches are a good compromise to the sound of blues. | ||
