And use of the SSD depends on how you use your PC. If you don't reboot frequently, it may not be worth having your OS on it.
Ive actually never reinstalled windows so i honestly dont know much about it. What happens to the OS that is on the SDD? Will it be cleared or do i have to clear it? Also, what about the key for windows 7 seeing as i have already used it? Can i just enter it and it will work again?

@skyR
Thanks, just wanted to check to make sure I don't goof up terribly
I got an extra SATA cable for my SSD, I heard most mobos only come with 2. Is there anything else I might be forgetting?
|
That's everything. Most low-end boards do only come with two.

This is more of an upgrade than a new purchase, so I'll list my current rig, and expectations.
Mobo: MSI P55-GD65 ( Sata II, USB 2.0 ) CPU: i5-750 ( This is a bit older, but still good right?) GPU: 9800 GTX 512mb ( I believe this is the GTS 250) RAM: 4GB PSU: 650w Corsair
Current Resolution: 1280x1024, I can play starcraft2 on ultra settings and be fine.
The upgrades I'm currently planning to buy: SSD: I'm going to purchase a 80-120g SSD for my OS, Games etc. This seems to be a great investment. Monitor: I want a monitor that supports 1900x1080, and looks sharp. Is it worth it to buy one of the new 120hz monitors? Could someone point me to an example of a good 60hz and 120hz monitor (23-24inch)
My main questions are, do I need a new GPU to play at my new resolution (1900x1080) at max settings? Would using a 120hz monitor affect my GPU needs? If so, what level GPU would I need?
|
At ma settings yes you will need a new GPU probably, i'd say a good 6850/6870 or gtx460/gtx560
the only thing about monitors that affect gpu is the resolution

Well, it is if you want to play at higher fps, which I guess is what you would want a 120 Hz monitor for (other than 3D lol). If you want to play newer games other than SC2 consistently higher than 60 fps at high graphics settings, you'll really need an upgrade over the 9800 GTX. However, a consistent 60 fps (low fps getting close to 60, not average) is already plenty good enough for most people.

Not sure if this is the place for it but I figured I'd ask here anyways. I built a computer with parts recommended by you guys a week ago and its been running great, have it overclocked to 4.8GHz @ 1.38V (i5-2500k). I was wondering if this is considered a safe voltage for everyday use, taking into consideration that I have speedstep on that dials it back to 1.6GHz and 1.2V when the cores aren't stressed. Thanks for your help!
|
Yes, it's a safe voltage.
|
I literally favorited this comment, how do you come up with such a good build for a little price, even without the OS or HDD...

All of these builds work exactly the same and cost exactly the same. Its not rocket science.
|
There's a lot of benchmark data on a lot of parts nowadays that you just need to find a reliable source for them and just start picking out which ones have the best value for money.
|
I can second this on the EVGA GTX 560 Ti AR, Lifetime warranty and i had the core clocks up to 1000MHz from 850MHz and the memory massively overclocked with zero cooling issues with only a minor bump in voltage. For a cheap card, this thing is a beast.

Oh come on, you think people actually read any of this thread first to realize that the same things get suggested over and over again?

It comes out to $575. I am trying to keep this system as cheap as possible.
Will this be able to run SC2 on max settings if I wanted to? I personally like Low settings but i just want the ability to be able to. Also can it run sc2 and stream at the same time and not be choppy?
Any suggestions? all the parts are from newegg.com

A 1 TV HDD is on shell shocker deal for $49 right now, $4 more than your HDD. I do not know about Newegg time zones, but if you read this in time you may be able to order it quick, even if you get it before the other items. (Also free shipping) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136490
I ordered this before my other items.

That's a Caviar Green. You do not want to use a Caviar Green as a boot drive -_- they're slow and meant for storage only.

Hey SkyR (Or Jingle if you read this =D)
What ghz can the Xigmatek Gaia cool safely to? Also what PSU/watts could safely run a 6870 1 GB and i5 2500k up to 4.2 ghz? The online calculator thing confuses me as I do not know what those things are. Thanks!
Oh wow thanks about the Caviar, managed to cancel in time, you're a life saver. Btw you probably recognize me already, and I just want to say its been confirmed I am ordering my computer before August 10th, finally!
