@MiXyass

This is the bundle we are talking about: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59963&promoid=1312

You see $220 because you didn't apply this week's promotional sale into the url.

Your motherboard will have USB 2.0. If you aren't going to be using any external HDDs, it doesn't really matter if you have USB 3.0 or not so I wouldn't worry about it.

SATA is the port you plug your internal HDDs and SSDs (Solid State Drives) into. If you have no plans in the future to buy a SSD (a lot faster than HDDs) than having SATA 3 or not wouldn't matter.

@Sathiroth

If you're going with a core i5 2400, you'd want an H67 board such as the ASUS one you listed. A good featured board for a good price would be the Asrock H67M but I didn't check if it was available at your retailer.

For RAM, just pick up any DDR3 2x2gb 1333MHz kit from a manufacturer you trust / prefer.

does anyone know about the vrm quality on the asrock p67 boards? well specifically the extreme4/6 ones? i see alot of people giving asrock a wide berth because of a perceived 'cheapness' in their boards...any truth to this?

Yes everything appears to be correct.

Free shipping is either with Canada Post or Purolator. I've never had a problem with either courier but your experiences may vary.

@Legatus Lanius:

Once you get past the low-end implementations and into the realm of "good enough" unless doing some extreme overclocking, it's hard to tell what's better. More phases or more hardware doesn't necessarily mean a better design. Suffice to say, most motherboards seem to be capable enough. The AsRock Extreme4 and most of the below are already well into the realm of "good enough":
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/p67-motherboard-roundup-lga-1155-sandy-bridge,2837-29.html
http://www.overclock.net/intel-motherboards/916189-official-intel-p67-sandy-bridge-motherboard.html

You can see pretty good results on Gigabyte P67A-UD3 and Asus P8P67-level motherboards. Extreme4 is higher-end than that.

Oic, when I clicked the shipping part it gave me this

Free Ground Shipping FREE Usually takes 2-8 business days to ship. *

Purolator Ground (Upgrade to Purolator Ground for $15.00) $15.00 Usually takes 2-6 business days to ship. *
Canada Post Ground Expedited (Upgrade to Canada Post Ground Expedited for $15.00) $15.00 Usually takes 3-8 business days to ship. *

So I'm assuming that the free shipping is with either of those, and the $15.00 upgrade doesn't do anything but limit me to one of them?

Also, when do you think I should purchase this? I really want to do it right now BUT I know that if I get my computer before my finals I will want to test everything out and it'll ruin my study=\, but I don't want to miss out on some of the deals. My last exam is on April 21st

Well today is Thursday. If you order right now, it won't be processed until later today because staff have to manually approve pricematches. Nothing happens over the weekend so your build probably won't be started until Monday 11th and than testing would take probably 2 days. At best, you're looking at a shipment date of Thursday 14th so you're going to get it on the 18th or 19th. This is a best case scenario.

Best to order now as the CX430 usually always sells out at that price and the RAM is also most likely to sell out. You're just going to have to force yourself to study.

After reading all this stuff, I've decided that I'm going to take the plunge. Can someone suggest to me a build? Here's any pertinent info. Let me know if you need anything else.

Budget: $700 ($800 if I can get a significant improvement)
Resolution: 1920x1080
Use: Really going to need it for audio editing and recording (via Pro Tools) but would also like to be able to play most of the games that are out there.
Timeframe: In the next 3-4 months
Overclocking: No
Operation System: No
Crossfire/SLI: Maybe in the future?

I have access to both a Microcenter/Fry's if need be.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
Super serious.

Hey guys, so thanks to skyR, I will be purchasing my computer when I get home from school tonight and now I'm just wondering if I could get some second opinions on the build that he (and myrmidon) have prepared for me. It's not that I don't trust their judgment, but just in case they overlooked something. I wouldn't want to purchase my PC and having missed one little tiny thing lol.

Hey guys, so I posted this on the tech support site to see if I could get some more feedback and I got this.

That power supply does not seem to have 80+ certification so you might want to avoid that since you're running it with a modrn system + a Fermi video card. If it was an 80+ version of the 430W, it'd be at more on a comfortable setting. A power supply isn't something you want to gimp on as a bad one can start killing parts in a computer. One of my friends suffered the death of two 7800GTs back in the day from one. There's a really inexpensive one on the site that you linked thought hat may be a decent replacement - http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=53968&vpn=OCZ700SXS2&manufacture=OCZ Technology&promoid=1312

I didn't do much looking though so you may find others or better ones. It's an 80+ and has a ton of wiggle room if you want to start using better hardware later.

What do you guys think about that? (tbh, I trust your judgment a little more than a blizzard rep )

I wouldn't mind taking the price up a little bit more for a sufficient power supply, but you guys let me know what I should do!
thanks

The GTS450 only uses 84W, so around 7A at 3D Loads:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/nvidia-geforce-gts-450_4.html#sect0

The i3 2100/mobo we'll round to 110W.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/21
*I believe AT's load tests are CPU-based loads only. Either way this estimate is conservative.

You're looking at ~200W at load, +/- with HDs, fans, etc.

Now normally I laugh when someone recommends an OCZ PSU, but just from a quick check at the usual sites, seems like StealthXStream v2 isn't nearly as bad as the first versions and seem to be decent units for the price.

With no power comes no responsibility?

Since you didn't specify yes/no for overclocking and SLi / CrossfireX. I'm going to leave that option open for you incase you do want to do either in the future. Total comes to $1279 before mail in rebates and promotional gift cards. This leaves you with ~$200 for a monitor. You'll be getting $50 worth of promotional gift cards and $90 worth of mail in rebates. If you want to factor these into the total, that would come to $1139.

If you're sure you don't want to overclock, you can get rid of the Coolermaster Hyper 212+, step down to a Core i5 2400 @ $187 and switch to a Asrock H67M or any MSI H67 boards. This would shave roughly ~$100 off your final total.

The above total comes to $684 before mail in rebates, taxes, and shipping.

If you are not guaranteed a second graphics card at a heavily discounted price or for free in the future than SLI / CrossfireX is a stupid upgrade path. Let me give you an example, 8800GT was released 3 years ago at a pricepoint of ~$200, 8800GT now go for ~$100. A 8800GT SLI setup performs worse, consumes more power, and produces more heat / noise than the current generation of cards at the ~$200 pricepoint (6850, 6870, GTX 460).

You're also paying a premium on the power supply and motherboard in order to get SLI. In order for you to support SLI with the above setup, you'll be paying an extra ~$100. Considering your tight budget, this would not be worth it.

AMD's next generation processors are due out in June and prices will surely have dropped in 4 months so come back and ask for a build again in 4 months when you are going to be buying.

The Corsair CX430 is actually 80+ Certified. Corsair just doesn't advertise it.

I personally wouldn't recommend spending $30 (not counting rebate since its not the best idea to base your total on rebates) extra for a OCZ 700w when your system isn't even going to pull 300w. If you want to spend extra on a power supply, it's best to spend it on one with a five year warranty as opposed to the OCZ's three and the CX430's two.

People complain about OCZ rebates all of the time, personally I've had 5-6 things purchased from them and I always get my rebate back relatively quickly

How do you know the exact power usage? If you use a power usage estimator that looks at what parts you have, you get a very rough approximation (usually overinflated a bit) at best. Non-overclocked CPU means the stock cooler that comes should be sufficient. HAF 912 has plenty of cooling for a build like that.

@MiXyass:

Personally, I'd rather have a better monitor and step down the video card. The GTS 450 is still pretty strong and can run SC2 on high and possibly ultra depending on the resolution and desired fps:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57924

edit: GTS 450 is not far behind the GTX 550 at all, so I think the above for $110 is a better deal than a GTX 550, if you're not counting on the MIR.

If you can do without USB3 support on the motherboard (you can probably get an add-on card if needed) and some other features, you could go for a cheaper motherboard. This is the cheapest one listed on NCIX (I didn't bother looking for pricematching, though you can try that):
http://ncix.com/products/?sku=59106

Take the bundle if you want to give up features, nevermind.

I used the power estimator here.
