Just to make sure I don't screw this up. The PSU has a total of 4 2x6 spots where I can plug power cables in. I'm about to use one of those with a cable that's split into 2x4 and reads "CPU1-P4"+"CPU2-P8" at those ends. That's the "8 pin connector" for my CPU on the MB, correct?

Is there some overview for those labels on a be quiet dark power?

VGA/SATA/HDD seem obvious. "PCIe/MB" is going to be what? :3

edit: If I plug my casefans into the MB connections instead of the built-in one for the case I can control them later via software, also right? If yes I'll just do that instead.

e2: NEVERMIND about the CPU connection. Could have just tried plugin it in to figure out where it clearly doesn't belong. >_>

e3: THIS CPU FAN WILL KILL ME WHILE TRYING TO GET IN THE 8 PIN CONNECTOR JESUS CHRIST WHY IS IT SO BIG T_____T

e4: Evo 1 Phanteks 0. At least I know Cyro would have been proud of how I used my thermal paste.

Yes.

Erm, as long as the pins fit in the sockets along with a little bit of common sense/care, it will be fine.

A 6 or 8 pin connector (and an 8pin and 24pin for motherboard)? Not really sure what yo're asking.

Yes, you can set the fan profiles for various output headers in the bios.

I... I won't ask.

Yeah put fans onto the mobo unless your case has a nice controller. Sounds like you got everything else sorted?

My sys fan spots on the MB are 4 pin, my fans are 3 min. That means I'd need PWM adapters for each to control them and I should just use the case control with its 5/7/12V settings instead for now, correct?

Shush Aylear, that stupid thing cut me first before I removed it. :<

@Rollin: I have one cable that's connecting to a 6pin labeled PCIe/MB. Since it's the only cable from which I only have one it seems kinda important.

You have to look that up in the manual. My board can do voltage control for 3-pin fans on the first of the system fan headers and the cpu fan header but not on any of the others. Those would need 4-pin pwm fans for control to work.

Answer all the questions in the op, we will be able to help you more

but at first glance :
change motherboard to gygabyte z87x-ud3h
gtx660ti to a gtx760
psu to superflower golden green 450 (or if you want to sli later go for a higher wattage model, xfx core is good too, OCZ ZS/ZT series is good and is pretty cheap)
change ssd to Samsung 840 series

The 'z' in z87 and 'k' in 4670k denote overclocking. If you are going to overclock then you need a cpu cooler, if you aren't you can save a little bit of money by getting cheaper processor and mobo. Or you can keep it how it is and add a cooler later when you want to overclock.

Keyboard wise, all the coolermaster keyboards are good (quickfire rapid is best, others are fine). If you don't care about money you can grab a filco from keyboardco in the UK.

What is your budget?
~$1400

What is your resolution?

2 monitors. Both 1920x1080

What are you using it for?

Gaming, watching movies, streams. I play most new games that are coming out and would like to be able to run them with ease. I'd also like the GPU/CPU to run relatively cool. Definitely want a full size case.

What is your upgrade cycle?

3 years

When do you plan on building it?

Within a month.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Yes, CPU.

Do you need an Operating System?

No.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Single card preferred.

Where are you buying your parts from?

Newegg/Amazon

Totals to $1260. If you need a disc drive than add one for ~$15. Keep in mind the Define R4 is a mid-tower case and mid-towers are already very spacey if you don't do SLI / Crossfire, have a dozen HDDs, or do custom liquid. If you want a full-tower to house eight+ HDDs or radiators than you are welcome to select your own full-tower case that meets your needs / wants.

Alright guys. I'm (semi-)happily posting from the new PC, all seems fine so far. I ran Intel Burn Test / Heaven and Prime 95, the first two at around ~25° room temp the latter at both ~25°C and later at ~16°C room temp. I used Core Temp 1.0 RC5 to check the temps, SpeedFan was unprecise as fuck. All case fans+CPU fan ran at 100%, manually set via SpeedFan (I ended up connecting fans to MB).

Intel Burn Test: Hit a max temp of 93°C
Heaven: Hit an average of ~78°C with peaks at 80°C for the GPU
Prime 95: Hit 78°C max in the first run and 73°C max in the second run.

This seems way too fucking hot across the board if I'm understanding you guys correctly. Could there be some kind of voltage increase going on from the stock MB? Is that me fucking up the thermal paste somehow? What are my next steps to identify what's causing it?

GPU temps are fine. CPU temps are bit high for stock because that leaves you no room temp wise for overclocking. What are your idle temps and do you get a motherboard temp readout anywhere?

If mobo temps are normal and idles high then you probably just stuffed up mounting the cpu cooler, easy and common mistake. Just try again.

What tool should I use for reading it out?

Idle:

I'm not sure which sensor is what yet, when I run Prime95 Temp3 goes up the highest (still about 10°C behind the readouts from Core Temp) but Core 0 is like 5-6°C right behind it. All the other readouts stay between 28°C and 36°C.

e: Keep in mind this is NOT with the stock cooler but with the Phanteks. Time to mount it again and again till it stays... how low under Prime95?

e2: Oh and on top of what Antoine said for cleaning CPU/cooler I used 70% alcohol until there was no more residue on q-tips and I use the paste that came with it (PH-NDC). Should I switch any of that up?

does anyone know where i can buy high quality custom colored and sleeved PSU cables? My friend got some from frozenCPU, is that the best bet? Most people who sleeve their psu themselves seem to do a much better job, i'm wondering whether there's some company that specializes in selling these...

This is a continuation frommy post earlier, just answering the questions on the main (first page )

What is your budget?

My budget is £1000

What is your resolution?

1920x1080 currently, but I would like to go higher if possible in uture :D Currently I own a screen with 1080p resolution, but am hoping to upgrade to a higher resolution screen later.

What are you using it for?

I will be using the Computer for thing like lab reports, coding, gaming (sc2 and LoL mostly but occasionally play games like battlefield and Skyrim) CAD, maybe some CFD simulation if possible but not on the top of my list

What is your upgrade cycle?
3-5 years

When do you plan on building it?

Sometime within the next year :D

Do you plan on overclocking?
I dont not know how to overclock and do not fully understand when water cooling is required ? for the tasks I listed earlier will cooling be required?

Do you need an Operating System?
No

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I dont fully understand how SLII works, I just know that it means you can have 2 or more GPUs , but I dont know how that affects power requirements (ie simple scaling) , if its beneficial to buy say 2 gtx 660tis than one gtx 680 or something of that sort then im open to the idea :D If someone could elaborate on how this works please let me know id be very thankful :D

Where are you buying your parts from?

Amazon or PC World
