Your temperatures seem a bit low, and it's kinda ridiculous to fail 4.2ghz with 1.3vcore, doesn't seem right

just had to cmos ~_~ need to have 1.360 vcore for 4,4ghz, think i do something wrong when i see the charts of people with the same board / cpu having so much less vcore than me to achieve even higher clocks, and mine is not even stable :D went 1.355 vcore and pc didnt even let me go into bios anymore. loaded my settings for 4.1ghz, at least thats stable and not reaching 70c with silent cooler settings in prime95... probably ve to look at oc again in a year or so if i play something that demands more power and now its probably not the time as i am too retarded to do stuff as it seems

What's your graphics card? A 3570k at 4 + ghz is nothing to sniff at...

Hey there! I'm looking to put together a new computer since mine's reaching the 6 year mark and is starting to show its age. I don't need a new monitor, mouse, keyboard, or any other peripherals like that. Just a desktop case and all the goodies inside of it. I'll post information following the guideline on the front page, but if there's any other information I could give to help me figure out what to buy let me know and I'll do my best! Thanks for any help.
What is your budget? 800 to 900 USD. I'd prefer to stay closer to the 800 range, but really if there is a good option that would push me towards 900 I don't mind at all.
What is your resolution? I have a 1680x1050 Gateway monitor at the moment.
What are you using it for? Primarily gaming, though since I'm going into Computer Science as a major I would also be using it for some programming (Even though I'll have a laptop solely dedicated to this, but I thought it worth mentioning)
What is your upgrade cycle? 3-5 Years likely. As I said, this one has lasted me about 6 with me having to upgrade the graphics card once.
When do you plan on building it? Right now, pretty much.
Do you plan on overclocking? Nope.
Do you need an Operating System? Yes, and preferably Windows 7, unless 8 or another option would be a better choice.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Nope.
Where are you buying your parts from? The internet, since I'd bet the best deals would be online. But, if there's anything I should get locally, I have a Bestbuy nearby and a local computer shop called "Computers and More." I'm living in the US.
That's that! Thanks again for any help you can give me, and I'll answer any questions if you have them for me.

It's over your budget and the reason why is the large SSD. You could go with a 120GB SSD but thats only good for 4 or so games and an OS, so you would need a HDD also...
Also watch somebody be quicker than me...
Edit: You could always build on Ivy and save a tad... Edit2: Also I didn't include an optical drive so if you need one it's $20 more.
Edit3: I would go with Ivy if you order before midnight pst.

Hmm, newegg won't let me browse Motherboards atm but you want a B75/H77 one. I'm going to take a gamble and say the ASRock H77 pro4 will be <$80.
Ends up being ~$50 cheaper.

Just for an update on Haswell (I don't think Cyro or I have posted for a while) it seems there are a lot of things that affect the CPU other than Vcore. I'm currently on:
4.4Ghz at 1.14V 3.9Ghz Cache/uncore and 1.12V uncore +.10 digital, analog, and system voltage 1.9V VRIN/Input voltage
Without messing with anything else but vcore on the other hand, I need 1.2V to make 4.4 completely stable. I think Cyro has 4.5 Ghz stable at like 1.17 volts as well, but I'm not sure. Temps are 80 celsius to 72 celsius on IBT, and no higher than 53 celsius in SC2 :D

My CPU is really silly. I need to understand the architecture and voltages better; I've passed 1.165v on 4.5ghz, but also failed 1.2. Enabling AVX seems to require higher vcore (STOP 0x0124's very quickly)
This is uncore at 1:1 (4.5ghz) with a probably overkill because not tested thouroughly voltage of 1.2, with +0.15 to digital and analog io and +0.1 to system agent voltage. Vcore a touch overkill too probably, but not more than ~0.015v with other voltages set like this
RAM, 2x4gb samsung green @ 2000mhz 10-10-10-28 1.45v (which is a little conservative)

Haswell is hot. I'm going to replace my exhaust fan (i broke it, so this is open case with about 20c ambients) and buy a 2500rpm ty-143 fan to throw as a third onto my silver arrow, and also add another intake i think at bottom; because of how nicely it lines up with my blower GPU intake (and i guess any other blower GPU) which should significantly reduce max noise levels of my system, or at least make it harder for a game to trigger noise ramp-ups. I'm not too bothered about them; but i can probably lower them a lot, so why not?
Take the below with a big grain of salt, i have results that probably invalidate all of this. Will get some more and publish. + Show Spoiler +I'm doing some benchmarks now that i'm more set up, x264 performance and temperatures with and without avx, same for sc2. The temperature gain from enabling AVX hurts. If it doesn't help massively, i can't see myself leaving it on for gaming, because i'm serious when i say it cuts AT LEAST 200mhz from overclock. All of those reports about 90c at 1.2v with a h100i were indeed correct. You CANNOT overkill on cooling for haswell even if you delid for the >20c drop i think. The days of hyper 212 are over; Haswell at 1.25 is hotter than ivy at 1.35 as far as i can tell. While a 212 could get you to, assuming the same voltage requirements, probably 4.8ghz on sandy i5, 4.5 on ivy i5, you're down to 4.2-4.3 area with haswell. That's mhz that you have to fight back for with better cooling to make overclocking the CPU's worthwhile; If you want cheap, grab a 2500/2600k and a 212, you'll clock half a ghz faster. I think Haswell makes itself worthwhile when you are willing to spend more on CPU (accepting that singlethreaded performance is a limited resource) and also on cooling, and with certain workloads including avx/avx2 (it see's 13% gains over ivy bridge in x264 before avx2 support) but in general, it doesn't seem to smash very badly at all because IPC gains are low enough to be almost entirely offset by just clocking 500mhz higher on the same cooling with a cheaper CPU and motherboard (if you buy used sandy)
If nothing else, you should be able to worry a lot less about motherboard quality with the integrated voltage regulator and lower voltages; I got a ud3h thinking it might help me some pushing towards 1.4v, but even with a delid i don't think it's possible on air. Belial ran Ivy at 1.5v but i think haswell is at least like 0.1v hotter.. It does seem to have a lot of instances of lower volts for good clocks though. I've seen 1.125v 4.5ghz, ~1.25v 5.2ghz (phase change so ~0c which helps a lot) and more instances of just good volts than i think i saw with ivy, which helps to offset the heat, which is great, but relative OC headroom has definately dropped since ivy (especially since newer 3570k's seem to be clocking great) even after ivy lost a ton of easy OC headroom from sandy
There is only one way i would reccomend to cool Haswell if you dont want to deal with phase changes or other subambient cooling.. + Show Spoiler +

have there ever been any sales for the 840 256gb below 170$? I'm thinking about picking one up for my laptop.
|
Do you mean the 840 250gb because I've never seen the Pro 256gb go even under $200.
|
|
It's currently on sale for $174.99 + $1.99 shipping on newegg.
|
Ya, it's been on sale for under $170 numerous times before. It's $170 right now at Amazon.
|
Hmm thanks! I'm not really in a hurry; if it has dropped below 175 before I might as well wait and see if I can save 10 or 15 dollars. Thanks very much :D

I’m specifically interested in whether you can achieve any measureable fps gains, when overclocking your God RAM. I’m asking because you can get standard 1600 MHz/CL 9 RAM for 40 € less than your Samsung Green RAM.

I highly doubt that going from 1600MHz to 3200MHz is worth the effort for the little difference it provides in gaming.
