Thanks for the translation infinity, It should say "Warhammer 40000" tho, as there doesn't exist any game called Warhammer 20000 (I know the error is in the korean interview, but still).

[OSEN=어바인(미국), 고용준 기자] 예전 한 설문조사에서 한국의 20대 청년들에게 취직하고 싶은 직종을 물었을때 많이 나온 대답 중의 하나가 게임회사의 입사였다. 그렇다면 게임회사에 다니는 이들이 가장 가고 싶은 곳은 어디일까. 바로 스타크래프트와 워크래프트 시리즈로 유명한 블리자드이다.

미국 캘리포니아주 어바인에 위치한 블리자드는 미국, 유럽, 아시아 지역에서 온 3000명의 직원이 근무하는 글로벌 기업. 1991년에 설립된 블리자드는 써드 파티 개발업체에서 현재 최고의 엔터테인먼트 소프트웨어 퍼블리셔로 발돋움했다.

3000명의 직원 중에 블리자드 본사가 있는 어바인에서 한 한국인이 자신의 맡은 바 소임을 다하고 있다. 스타크래프트2 전투보고서 1, 2, 3탄에 이름을 올린 데이비드 김(27). 한국 이름이로 김태연씨가 주인공이다.

한국에서 고등학교까지 마치고 캐나다로 건너간 김씨는 2007년 WWI서 발표된 스타크래프트2 발표장에서 블리자드 입사를 결심했다고 밝혔다. 당시 김씨가 다니던 회사는 워해머시리즈 유명한 랠릭 엔터테인먼트.

그해 겨울 데이비드 김은 2007년 겨울 자신이 동경하던 블리자드 입사를 성공했다. 블리자드에 입사한 김씨는 신작 스타크래프트2에 제작서 가장 중요한 역할 중 하나인 밸런스 디자이너를 맡으면서 e스포츠팬들에게 자신의 이름을 알리기 시작했다.

다음은 데이비드 김과 일문 일답.


- 밸러스 디자이너가 하는 역할은 무엇인지.
▲ 전장을 제작하는 역할도 있지만 종족간의 상성이라든지 지형에 대해 멀티 플레이어에 대한 디자인을 맡고 있다.

- 언제부터 게임에 대해 관심을 가지게 됐는지. 블리자드에 입사한 과정을 설명하자면.
▲ 슈퍼 패미콤의 드래곤볼 시리즈를 하면서 게임에 관심을 갖게 됐다. 고등학교 졸업하고 캐나다에서 대학공부를 하게 됐고, 자연스럽게 캐나에 있는 게임회사에 입사하게 됐다. 2007년 스타크래프트2 개발소식을 듣고 평소부터 관심이 있던 회사여서 지원을 하게 됐다.

- 블리자드에서 일하면서 느끼는 좋은 점은 어떤 점인지. 또 밸런스 디자이너를 희망하는 사람들에게 조언을 해준다면.
▲ 가장 즐거운 점은 내 취미가 블리자드 게임이었다는데 있다. 취미생활을 가지고 일을 한다는 자체가 즐겁다. 각 분야에서 뛰어난 사람들이 모여 있어 일할 때 무엇보다 편하는 점을 들 수 있다. 일을 진행하면서 믿음직스럽고 안심할 수 있다. 또 밸런스 디자이너의 경우 하나를 집중적으로 준비하는게 좋을 것 같다. 게임을 단순하게 잘하기 보다는 게임의 상성관계 라든지 종족간의 차이점을 고민하고 발전시킬지에 대해 생각하면 될 것 같다.

- 블리자드에 원하는 인재상을 말한다면.
▲ 사실 내가 하고 있는 직업 말고는 잘 모른다. 하지만 실력 위주인 것 같다. 물론 팀플레이 적인 일이 있어서 의사소통 같이 결정을 하고 직위와 능력에 상관 없이 모두가 동의할 수 있는 해결방법을 찾는 사람들이 아닌가 한다.

Mora, it looks pretty similar to the first one.

i made more of a more complete interview, i started it before infinity's came out lol, but i had to run an errand and i was too late. didn't want to just leave it unfinished though :p i made all the fixes that i saw in the thread like Warhammer 40000 and AION.

We met a Korean developer of Blizzard Entertainment’s (Shortened as Blizzard) anticipated RTS game Starcraft 2 (Shortened as Star 2).

데 이비드킴(본명 김태현)은 공개된 '스타2' 전투보고서(배틀리포트) 세 편에서 프로게이머에 버금가는 실력을 선보이며 게이머들 사이에서 화제가 되고 있는 인물이다. 2007년 블리자드에 입사한 그는 '스타2'를 개발하고 있는 50여명의 핵심 개발자 가운데 한 명.

David Kim (Korean name Kim Tae Hyun) appeared in the 3rd battle report and showcased talent of a pro gamer to become a topic among the gaming community. He is one of the 50 core developers of ‘Star 2’.

그는 ‘스타2’와 관련된 세부적인 내용을 밝히는 것은 꺼려했지만 기자와의 가벼운 대화에서 블리자드에서 근무하는 개발자로서의 자부심을 드러냈다.

Although he won’t reveal details about ‘Star 2’, he had a light conversation with the reporter about his pride being a developer for Blizzard.

Q: 해외에서 근무하게 된 계기는?
Q: How did you become to work in a foreign country?

A: 한국에서 태어나 캐나다 밴쿠버에 위치한 대학에 진학, 컴퓨터 과학을 전공하고 프로그래밍 준비하다가 '컴퍼니 오브 히어로즈'와 '워해머 20000' 시리즈로 유명한 렐릭사에 입사하며 밸런스 디자이너 일을 하게 됐다.
A: I was born in Korea and went to college in Vancouver, Canada, majoring in computer science. I was going to work for programming for the “Company of Heroes” and “Warhammer 40000” series but then became a balance designer for Relic.

Q: 렐릭과 블리자드 두 회사는 어떤가?
What is the difference between Blizzard and Relic?

A: 양쪽 회사 모두 뛰어난 RTS게임을 만들어내는 회사로 블리자드는 e스포츠 쪽에도 크게 염두를 두고 있으며 렐릭은 좀 더 다양한 방법의 플레이에 신경을 쓰는 것 같다. 개인적으로 양사 게임 모두를 재미있게 하고 있고 둘 다 최고의 회사라 생각한다.
For both companies excelling in making RTS games, it seems like Blizzard concerns more for the eSports side while Relic concerns more about diverse methods of play. The companies individually, make their games fun and they are both great companies.

Q: 블리자드에서 맡고 있는 일은?

A: '스타2'의 밸런스 디자인을 맡고 있다. 쉽게 말해 '스타2'의 각 유닛을 상황에 따라 필요성이 있도록 만들고 모든 게임에서 잘 사용되도록 하는 작업이다. 종족의 특성과 유닛 개별의 특성을 맞추는 것이 현재 최대 목표이다.
A: I am a balance designer for ‘Star 2’. In other words, I make it so that units are needed in certain situations and also make it so that the units are used well in all games. The main goal right now is to match the unit’s characteristics to its race characteristics.

Q: 블리자드의 강점은 무엇이라고 생각하나?
Q: What do you think is Blizzard’s strengths?

A: 누구나 평등하게 의견을 제시할 수 있다는 점이다. 모든 일은 직급에 상관없이 자유롭게 토론과 이야기를 통해서 진행된다. 또한 각 분야에서 뛰어난 인재가 중심인물로 선정돼 일이 진행되며 대부분의 분야에 적합한 사람들이 배치돼 있다는 점이 강점인 듯 하다.
A: It is that anybody can express their opinion equally. Any concern, regardless of job, is discussed freely. Also, in each division there are extremely skilled people that are chosen as the leader so as the work progresses, it is arranged that there is a lot of agreement. (This was quite hard to translate, so many words I didn’t know, sorry if it’s wrong haha)

Q: 평소 즐겨 하는 게임은?
Q: What game do you enjoy usually?

A: ‘월드 오브 워크래프트’가 첫 온라인 게임이다. 언데드 마법사를 키우고 있다. 또 최근 기대하고 있는 게임 중 하나는 북미 출시 예정인 ‘아이온’.
A: My first online game is ‘World of Warcraft’. I am raising an undead mage. I am looking forward to the game ‘AION’.

Q: '스타2' 실력은?

A: 현재 사내 레더 페이지에서 랭킹 1위다. 뭐 게임이 출시된다면 한국 게이머들에게 금방 밀릴 것으로 생각된다(웃음)
A: I am ranked 1st in the current ladder. However, when the game comes out, I will probably get owned by the gamers in Korea (laugh).

In Super Famicom (?), I gained an interest in gaming while working on the Dragon Ball series. When I graduated from high school, I studied at Vancouver, Canada, and naturally I joined a game company. In the year 2007, I heard of the development of Starcraft 2 and I joined the company that I have always had interest in.

The most fun aspect of working at Blizzard is that my interest involves the games made by Blizzard. The whole idea of living inside my interests makes it fun. When the most talented people of each division work together, it is very comfortable. While working, there is a lot of trust, and a lot of peace of mind. I also like that as a balance designer, I only have to concentrate on one matter. To be a balance designer, instead of thinking how to make the game simple, you should think of the characteristics, race differences and similarities, and the expansion of the game.

Honestly, I do not really know besides my job. However, I think the main consideration is skill. Of course there is a lot of teamwork so, regardless of (job) position, you need good understanding skills so that everyone will resolve the issue with the same agreement. I feel like these kind of people is what Blizzard wants.
