2022-23 ESL Pro Tour - Open Cups: Week #242 (August 20-26)

by Wax

Week #242 of Open Cups concluded the competitive calendar for the EPT 2023/24 season, leaving the StarCraft II community to anxiously await for official news regarding the continuation of the ESL Pro Tour.

(Wiki)SHIN took home the final Korean server championship, taking down ByuN in a 3-0 finals sweep. (Wiki)MaxPax was victorious in Europe, flexing his best match-up of PvP in a mirror-heavy run (3-1 vs ShoWTimE in the finals). The demure Dane doubled down in the Americas server cup, not dropping a single map as he achieved his second win of the week (3-0 vs NightMare in the finals).

In non-ESL cup competition, (Wiki)Dark won KSL #57 (3-2 vs SHIN in the finals).

Doing my usual check-in to see some promising runs from Trap, hopefully he can take that next step soon.

I wonder how much Maximus Paximus has earned solely from weeklies at this stage :O

ESL EU was great this week.

So many people signed up who wouldn't normally!

The weeklies have become monotonous like a routine for both the players and the viewers. Something completely new should be created as a replacement.

What would you suggest?

Weeklies have, and basically always have filled a pretty crucial role. It’s where your up-and-comers get to tangle with established pros, it’s that bridge between being a good ladder player and tournament presence

4x Zerg in all of the brackets shown here, I'm not a fanboy, but that is really not a lot. Why are there so few high level zerg? And 50% of those we have are normally favourites to win the tournaments they enter. Weird.

Zerg representation has always been low.

Plenty of amateur Protoss and Terran players sign-up every week, knowing full-well that nabbing a game off a pro is the best they're likely to do, but amateur Zerg players don't seem to do the same.

No it hasn't.

In recent years, sure. But in HotS for example, EU had plenty of Zerg other than the few at the top. In something resembling the current state of the game, its mostly just been protoss that fill up those "newer" spots.

And its not some crazy coincidence that just happened by lulz in the weeklies either.
Here are GM stats currently:
KR Protoss 39% to 22% Zerg
EU Protoss 42% to 23% Zerg (nearly double lmao)
NA is currently pretty balanced, but even there in the last few seasons Protoss has had a sizeable edge over Zerg.

I think you've misread my post, or perhaps I should've been clearer, because what I meant was that Zerg representation in the ESL weeklies has always been low. I didn't mean to imply that Zerg representation on the ladder has always been low.

But I'll have to admit that I haven't checked any statistics for Zerg representation in the ESL weeklies, I'm just going off how it's always felt from watching the broadcasts etc.

Well there are a couple reasons.

Zergs has been receiving nerfs along with terrible maps this season

But the main reason is American cup just don’t have any good Zergs in that region beside scarlet

Eu well besides reynor and Serral, no one is really gonna dethrone maxpax / showtime/ or any of the top Koreans who participle

Korean region is basically just dark and solar

But overall the top Zergs skillwise> both terran and Protoss skill wise

But well, the ESL cups are exactly here to give players from the lower ranks an opportunity to play the top guys and gain experience. So I don't see "they won't dethrone xy" as an argument here.
Maybe it is just easier to get results as protoss/terran on this level? Yeah I know, terran is supposed to be the hardest to master, but maybe there is some kind of roadblock for zergs at exactly this low/high GM level?
Because normally, with the amount of success the likes of Serral, Reynor, Dark and Rogue have had the last five years, there should be a lot of fanboys trying out zerg for themselves, or not?
But then again, the game is old, and there are a lot of people just watching, not playing (like me). I guess, there are not so many new players, so maybe this doesn't play a role here.
