COME ONE, COME ALL!

NEVER BEFORE SEEN ANYWHERE!

TEAM LIQUID PRESENTS: TEAMLIQUID STARLEAGUE 9!

Team Liquid announces a show-stopping tournament for the ages, TeamLiquid StarLeague 9!

As part of the ESL Pro Tour Circuit, this once-in-a-lifetime tournament showcases 32 ferocious Starcraft players from around the globe. This great group of athletes will show us all they’ve got to become the undisputed champion of TSL 9 and a marvel to the world. Best of all, this tournament will be happening OFFLINE, in Utrecht, Netherlands!

That's right, folks. For the first time* in TSL history, Team Liquid will host the final weekend at the spectacular Alienware Training Facility! The top 12 players within the competition are granted a paid flight across land and sea.

This satisfying, superb, and sublime circus of life and color would be impossible without our marvelous sponsors: HyperX, Coinbase, ESL, Twitch, Secretlab, IMC, Monster and of course, the always dependable Shopify!

All of us at Team Liquid are looking forward to presenting our most spectacular grand tournament yet, so step right up and learn more about TSL 9 below!

For double-elimination qualifiers with over 16 participants: the bracket will be single-elimination up to the Round of 16 (Ro16). From Round of 16 onward, the bracket will be double-elimination.

Community casters who would like to cover the qualifiers should fill out this community caster form at least 24 hours before the specified qualifier match(es) begin(s). You must also be a member of the Discord server with your identifying nickname. For non-English coverage of the main event (beginning July 29), please fill out the form as well, and we’ll be in touch after the qualifiers wrap up.

TSL at AWTF-EU

While the facility will not feature a live audience, we’re delighted to bring the last week of the tournament offline to Team Liquid’s AWTF-EU office! The facility features workstations and practice scrim rooms furnished with high-quality equipment, where our players will compete. It’s also where Team Liquid’s StarCraft 2 team trains and boot camps. Our production crew for TSL 9, Waveform, is full of long-time StarCraft fans who are eager to bring TSL to life. Look forward to seeing StarCraft players run rampant in our office!

(Psst. Hey. Even though TSL won’t have a live audience, we hope everyone watches TSL with great company. If you are interested in organizing a BarCraft for TSL, please get in touch! We’d love to support your endeavors.)

We’ll have more information to share within the coming weeks! If you have questions about the tournament, we’ll be glad to answer them here or on our official TSL Discord server. Thanks again to our gracious sponsors and your continued support of StarCraft 2, TSL, and Team Liquid.

It's amazing that after 14 years of TSL history we finally have an offline version! Super happy we can be part of the event once more and I'll be excited to watch!

— Dario "TLO" Wuensch
Head of Player Development, Shopify Rebellion

Thanks for making it all the way to the end of the post! Have some Liquid+ Points, and we'll see you online!

*: Due to the difference in scale, we are briefly choosing to overshadow TSL 3’s grand finals.

We've got a lot of long-time fans of StarCraft here at Waveform and we're all very excited to be a part of TSL 9. I've personally been watching since the very first TeamLiquid Starleague and been in and around the community since BW so you better believe we'll be pulling out all the stops for the LAN!

I think all former champions should have their own special qualifiers bracket. And I mean all champions including SC1.

Yay!!! Great stuff

As a side note though, any chance we can allow the visa-restricted Korean/Chinese (Russian?) a chance to play from home?

As people have said in other thread, Rogue cant leave Korea because of his incoming military service, the same go for Trap, and maybe Cure as well.

I love the addition of 3 slots being up for grabs by any region with just server limitations. That's probably the best way to decide those final 3 slots. Hope SC2 gets another patch soon before the event so I'll feel more motivated to watch.

If they aren t enlisted allready by that time, they might get an exception, like Zest this year or Classic before his militarry service. Appearently there are ways to work something out with Kespa and the government, because IEM is the world championship

From Narutos comments about HSC I assume, that ESL asked them to have regionlocked qualifiers
My gues is, that the discussion about the spot distribution made them go for Server qualifiers for the last 3 spots

Wasn't ESL bragging about how last year they'd quietly removed most region-locking? Maybe I'm misremembering. But it's an ass decision regardless.

Well they brought Koreans into the DH Main events like DH Valencia
So they Kind of softend the Region lock.
They still want to unsure representation from each Region apearently.
From a Business standpoint I can actually understand it, they would probably lose out on viewership, if (non hardcore-) fans from outside of KR and EU didn t have a hometown hero in the tournament.

You are probably right about things from the business side of things in the short term. But the un-softening is discouraging to me and has to be all the more discouraging for actual KR players. It wasn't like KR players took over the last TSL or anything, so I'm not sure why they felt the need to push this on tournaments that worked just fine not pulling this shit last time.

That aside, choking out the Korean scene is a bad long term choice. It's survived a remarkably long time given how they've been treated, banned from or having their participation capped in most competitions while non-Koreans have always been able to take slots in KR "regional" events. There are already very few up-and-coming KR players, and yet it's still providing most of the "depth" in tournaments. If the KR scene collapses then it's just the top 3/4 EU players trading titles around and the game really will be dead.

Regional preference, in the past Koreans often forfeited once they were in the lower bracket. We took their feedback so now it's single elim.
