2021 Global StarCraft II League: Super Tournament 2The quarterfinal match-ups for Super Tournament #2 have been determined, following a final day of RO16 matches that featured two series that went the full distance.
The good news for ByuN fans is that he didn't have to request any in-game pauses due to his wrist issues. The bad news is that he still lost 2-3 to Bunny, who was just slightly better on the day. The two players took turns trading blows in one-sided games, but Bunny got the last laugh by seizing the high ground before a game-deciding fight on Jagannatha. Bunny continues his 2021 resurgence, securing his fourth top-eight finish of the year.
Dream was the victor in the other five-game series of the night, narrowly toppling a dangerous looking Armani. The first four games of the series saw the two players spot each other a map a piece with failed cheeses (2-rax proxy for Dream, Nydus all-in for Armani), and also trade another pair of games in intense Muta-Ling-Bane vs Bio duels. Unfortunately for Armani, his Hydra-Baneling usage in game five was not quite as effective as his prior deployment of Muta-Ling-Bane, handing over the mid-game advantage to Dream before losing in the late-game.
The woes of offline-Cure continued in the Super Tournament, with Trap defeating him 3-1 to advance onto the quarterfinal round. While Trap was full of praise for Cure in his post-match interview (as is tradition for any interview involving former Jin Air players), the series was more of a one-sided skills showcase for Trap than anything else. Trap reminded us exactly why he's one of the top PvT players in the world, displaying both fantastic early-game micro and late-game army management to take a comprehensive victory. A third consecutive Super Tournament championship is starting to materialize for Trap, though his former Jin Air colleagues are likely to be major obstacles.
Finally, Maru closed out the RO16 with a clean 3-0 RagnaroK. It was yet another 'moral victory' series for RagnaroK, who put up impressive resistance as a heavy underdog before inevitably losing his games. Maru played Battlecruiser-mech in the first two games, which RagnaroK seemed to handle well in the mid-game while swallowing up his side of the map. Unfortunately, RagnaroK couldn't find a way to break through Maru's defenses, and eventually lost to his trademark defensive style. Maru switched things up with bio in game three, and once again, he withstood a series of Zerg offensives before extracting the final GG from his opponent.
Super Tournament #2 will continue on Monday, May 24 8:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) with quarterfinals, featuring Rogue vs Zoun, sOs vs Dream, Bunny vs Trap, and SpeCial vs Maru.
